Root Does anyone offer a "rooting service"

I very much enjoy my Optimus V phone. About the only thing I hate is bumping into that "LOW ON SPACE" icon and then scrambling around to see what else I can comfortably uninstall in order to free more space on the phone.

I have not rooted the phone because I know myself well enough to know that with my luck (and lack of skill) I'd probably brick it before successfully rooting it.

I often wonder whether anyone offers the service - for pay, of course - of rooting someone's phone for them. I also wonder how long it would take to do and what a skilled person would charge to do something like that.

In a perfect scenario people like that would live within driving distance. One brings the phone, waits, pays, and goes home with a safely rooted phone. Less ideal but still good would be shipping the phone to the expert and having it mailed back ASAP.
 
If I lived somewhere near you, I'd do it. But sadly I don't.

Rooting and flashing can be intimidating. I'm a tinkering geek and even I was a bit nervous about it. But it's actually easier than it looks. If you follow the directions exactly and don't carelessly rush, you likely won't brick. Since I first rooted four months ago, I've already flashed several ROMs (even tried a couple ICS ROMs). Also configured Link2SD (which itself can be a challenging task).

Keep it simple. First thing to do is install and run the Gingerbreak app (if you can't find it in Play, just do a Google search). You might have to try it a few times to get it to work, but it is probably the easiest way to do it. Also heard that Z4Root works as well, but haven't tried it on the Op V (used it on another phone). The app will effortlessly root your phone, and from there you can uninstall bloatware and do other things. After a while, you may feel comfortable enough to install a custom ROM. There are a lot of really good Gingerbread ROMs out there.

Look in the sticky threads here, as the directions are very thorough. Or you can look for how-to videos on YouTube. However, if you're still too nervous, you can probably find a geek-for-hire on Craigslist.
 
The stickies here make it fool proof! I was in your shoes and expecting to screw it up. The simplified root and recovery guide is step by step in lamens terms. You can't go wrong as long as you follow the directions and ask here if you don't understand something. You need to understand a little about the rooting/rom-ing process so that you can flash new roms, troubleshoot, overclock etc. AndyOpie150 told me best when I was wanting to post and just get a quick answer....read the guides and when you finish, read them again. Anything you need clarification on just bring here.
Root gives you access to some things that us noob's shouldn't mess with....best to know what to leave well enough alone!
 
If you really need help, i'm sure one of us experts wouldn't mind doing it over team viewer. It's just as easy, and we wouldn't actually even touch the phone. =p

I'll give them all strong consideration. I already have TeamViewer installed here. Never thought of it as a way for someone to help with the rooting process.

Here's a few simple tips to give a little rooting confidence.

1. If Gingerbreak/Z4Root take, your phone is officially 'rooted'.

2. Once the recovery is loaded and working (ClockworkMod is the most popular choice), then there is very little chance you'll brick. If you screw up, you can easily go back to the new recovery screen and reformat, install ZIP files from SD, etc.

3. If you've ever reformatted and reloaded the Windows operating system on your PC, it is a pretty similar process.

4. If you decide to go with a custom ROM, I would suggest any of the good 2.3 Gingerbread ones. They work flawlessly. Don't go for an ICS one, since they're still a little buggy. But the GB ROMs are much better than the stock 2.2 Froyo.

5. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

6. BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!!!
 
I'll break down #3 even farther.
If your rooted you now have access to all your system files, which can be accidentally deleted.
A custom recovery allows you to do many things the stock recovery can't. The most important is making a complete backup of your system (this is called a nandroid backup). This is much the same as a restore point on a PC.

When you mess something up (we all do) You can easily restore your backup in the recovery mode.

I usually make a backup every time I have updated at least a totall of 7 apps and or change the look of icons, wallpapers, etc.
I then go to the clockworkmod folder in the sd card and delete the old backup (there designation is a date/time stamp)

My recovery of choice is the Touch Screen Recovery. You can use either the hard keys or the virtual keys (soft keys).

And most importantly, if you screw up more than just the ROM part of the phone by flashing a corrupt recovery or a recovery made for a completely different phone, we now have a working unbrick solution that is very simple to follow. Just make sure you have a good USB cable ;)
