Droid Bionic launching late April

I pretty much agree with the above statement. I'm not excited about 4.3" screens at all. 4" would satisfy me quite contently. I've stated elsewhere that when I first got my Droid that it was almost too big. 3.7" was about the biggest out there (except the HTC HD2). I've warmed up to it, but the pocketability is def an issue. For the times when I use a leather case, the Droid was almost too big and I kinda feel like a jackass. 4.3"? Wow, I used to make fun of guys like me. lol

I disagree slightly about dual core, though. I haven't seen the video of the Thunderbolt yet (if anyone has a link, that'd be awesome), but I've OCed my Droid as high as 1.2GHz in the past and I also have two DIncs on my plan (one of which is rooted), and each of these has experienced hiccups. The RAM is the obvious culprit in the Droid, but the DIncs get them as well. I'm not that techy a guy, but the dual core has gotta help. And while I'd love 1GHz on the Bionic (it's obviously possible, why the hell not?), it's the RAM that I'm thinking is probably excessive. But, again, I'm not that techy.

Bottom line for me is that I'm ready for a new phone (took a while, I'm a day 1 Droid owner). It doesn't look like there's going to be a better choice on Verizon anytime till the holidays, so I might as well go for this. And the iPhone really isn't a choice for me. For one, I'm not buying all the same apps over again that will just transfer to a new Android phone. Secondly, I'll take a locked bootloader over a locked down service any day, and lastly, the majority of people who own iPhones should be castrated as to not water-down the gene pool any further.

That's ok. AT&T did their best to make the dock worthless anyways. Extra $300 to buy on top of the phone price, AND you have to pay for your regular data fees PLUS tethering to run the webtop. That is more shameful in my opinion than Sprint's manditory 4G shenanigans. You can't use that webtop without the phone. The Bionic has HDMI out, and that's what I really want anyways. The only things the Atrix still have going for it now are its more attractive/ergonomic and slender form factor and the fingerprint reader. Doesn't look like I'll be switching carriers anytime soon.

And I still don't see anything better with Sprint or T Mobile that will have the HDMI output. The Bionic is once again at the top of my list.

Sounds like most of us are in the same boat. We want all the features the Atrix has, but we'll settle for the Bionic. Not that it's a major settlement.

Oh, and I'm def glad for the 8mp camera on the Bionic. That's important to me.

You consider Q2 to be late in the year? I'm curious as to what happened to the other 6 months...and on that note, NOBODY EVEN KNOWS WHEN ITS GETTING RELEASED ANYWAYS SO ITS PURELY SPECULATION. Even if it comes out in June, that is barely 2 months behind the original slated date. The first dual core phone isn't even gonna be out til March, and youre already shouting the apocalypse of dual cores because quad core processors will MAYBE be in other technology by the end of the year? I dont even think you have any idea what youre talking about anymore. Youre relying on a 100% inaccurate roadmap "from Nvidia" and a possible holiday release of the PSP. Come on man, seriously. And the Bionic being a Droid X? It's starting to sound like you just hate smartphones completely as they are and have no need to be even posting around here. Kinda sounds like....you need an iPhone. If a 4.3" display that rivals the "Retina Display" and is actually visible in the sun with a higher resolution, a dual core processor on a SMARTPHONE, HDMI out, DDR2 RAM instead of the crappy SDRAM, and all the other bells and whistles is not impressive to you, then it sounds like you need to go kick rocks and wait for your dream phone that will, as I said before, never come because something will always be out "by the end of the year", which actually wont be anyways so youre just running in circles for nothing. 3D is just a garbage, gimmick fad that is used to sell products to morons. it has no bearing on the advancement of mobile products.

BTW, even if there were to be a quad core smartphone out by the end of the year, I can promise you Verizon would not get it, and wouldnt have one until months later anyways. Just as well, I am sure a hexcore processor is being planned out right now as well, probably being talked about, which means quad-cores are already dead as well. You're fighting an ever-losing battle dude. Go take a break and vent your frustration of the advancement of technology (which has been moving so quickly in the last decade anyways, don't know where you've been) somewhere else.

You're totally missing my point. By the time the Bionic is released, whether it be May or December. (And judging from most of our past experiences with Moto/VZW I'll bet on the latter.) It won't even be the best phone out!!

Right now the Atrix is the best phone coming out, hands down. My point is simple, why do we have to wait so long for the Bionic when the Atrix is coming out way before it and it's a better phone? And don't say it's cuz of LTE cuz HTC has managed to to put out a respectable phone with LTE.

Sorry, I find it very difficult to get excited for a half-assed phone coming out WAY past when it should. Will I get it? Probably, cuz it's the best on VZW. But I'm hoping LG will force Moto to step their game up.

I'm excited to see what LG will put out at MWC, 3D or not.

Hate to break this to you but bionic is taking longer because of the LTE addition, specifically the radio because the phone has many bugs affiliated with this implementation, namely the power management alongside dual core and a powerful scren. The phone is not coming out late and is not subpar. The phone is coming out in june AT THE LATEST.

Motorola Droid Bionic in FCC? -- Engadget

Bionic hitting the FCC? Maybe this phone is closer than we think.

For what it's worth:
Spoke with a guy who works in a local Costco kiosk. We were discussing my exchanging my Droid X for a Thunderbolt. He called his rep to find out if they'd be getting the TB when Best Buy and Verizon stores do. His rep told him to advise me to wait till between Feb 24th and 28th for the Bionic.

With a grain of salt of course, but I can think of no reason why the rep would bother making such a statement unsolicited.

And why can HTC manage to manufacture and implement an LTE radio and Moto can't? I know ATT has a worse network and they don't have LTE, but even they can get a 4G chip.

Sorry, when a better phone is coming out way sooner and has better specs, there's really no argument as to the large delay.

Well, I finally found a possible alternative to the Bionic/Thunderbolt:

LG Revolution Hands-on - Phone Arena

It's not a dual core, but it's not a locked bootloader Motorola, either. It looks so far to be a pretty stock Android experience, which will be a huge plus for roms, customizations, and future updates. The best thing it has for me will be HDMI out. YAY!!! Finally!!! Hopefully it's not locked down from bluetooth keyboards, but with a 4.3" screen, that's not as big of a deal to me as having HDMI. I will use that a lot.

I've always been a big LG fan. My main line with the new every two is eligible in April, so any time around there, or even after, will be fine. I think I'm gonna use my current upgrade to get my wife a Fascinate for Valentine's day. It's only $48 at walmart!!

If ANYONE comes out with Vanilla Android, I'll be on that phone like Championships in Green Bay!!

Moto decided to put a high end android phone on att before they put its counterpart on vzw. BIG WOOP! if the atrix is that awesome to you then get it. The fact that its on a vastly inferior network and will not have a TRUE 4g connection is enough for me to pass. And the fact that its coming out just a few months earlier kinda sucks, only because with vzw we usually get the pick of the litter. There is always something better around the corner but it doesnt mean that what's out now is crap. If the bionic is a good phone in Feb. It will be a good phone in June. So chill out relax and enjoy the ride people.

On video it looks like a pretty stock Android experience, with the exception of some testers that have reported it having Bing'd. Those of us who own Fascinates, however, are pretty good at de-Binging our VZ phones. I can live with that. Custom launcher + install google maps and you pretty much have your google experience back. If you root, you can even disable the bing processes and remove/rename the app packages themselves. I've done this on my Fascinate with no ill effects. Pretty straightforward.

I expect a non-bootloader-locked modern spec'd LG phone on Verizon to do quite well.

Lots of whining going on in here. Call a wambulance already. Moto decided to put a high end android phone on att before they put its counterpart on vzw. The Atrix has disqualified itself for many because of the exorbitant price for the dock, and the fact that using the webtop dock requires you to pay the tethering fee. That there takes away the main advantage it had over the Bionic, for me and I know quite a few others. Maybe VZ didn't want to deal with a webtop and just wanted a powerful phone with the new dual core Tegra 2 processor.

The only other major complaint is how bulky it is. The Atrix is reasonably ergonomic, but at 4.3" and 13.3 mm thick the Bionic is quite hefty. I wish they would've kept it a 4" screen - 1. to cut production costs and 2. to keep that QHD resolution as sharp as possible.

The observations might be "whining" to you, but people "whined" when the iPhone first came out. It was the first smartphone that the masses actually enjoyed using, but it was locked exclusively to America's worst rated major cellular network. Now that people are lovin' on android, once again, one of the greatest spec'd and actually nice looking state of the art Android phones is hitting, you guessed it, the major network still rated quite poorly in the U.S. Go to AT&T's website and look at their 3G coverage map. It looks about like it did four years ago. That is such an embarassment that I can't even begin to describe it with mere words. I remember a year where iPhone sales and their attached data planes were raking in the dough for AT&T and they continued to spend LESS on their network month after month. Regardless of their lame excuses, a chicken is still a chicken and a cow is still a cow. I'd rather have nationwide coverage and reliable reception for voice calls than the fastest 3G download speeds in some magical optimum reception areas.

I also like my unlimited data. If you want these things I mentioned that Verizon has, you're going to have to get the bulkier, less attractive looking, and worse spec'd Bionic. Which, by the way, is also hitting Verizon much later.

The complaints are well-founded, and I understand where folks are coming from. Fortunately for Verizon, AT&T somewhat shot themselves in the foot with the Atrix anyways.

I agree with everything you said except about the complaintts being well founded. The ram is the only thing the atrix has over the bionic. And that's only to support the overpriced webtop dock. Cdma tech takes longer to develope. Add in lte and that's where you get the time between launches. I would rather a phone be delayed a couple of months than rushed out with a bunch of fancy gadgets to make up for att losing the iphone exclusivity.

Moto decided to put a high end android phone on att before they put its counterpart on vzw. BIG WOOP!

What I really don't get, is not why ATT gets a phone sooner, but why VZ gets a DIFFERENT phone from Moto. Why are we even comparing the two phones? Is there a reason they are even being produced differently?

It's actually quite simple. Carrier goes to manufacturer and says they want a phone that will be exclusive, they pay a bunch of money.

There seems to be a lot of Bionic hate that is really blown out of proportion. The Bionic has a handful of advantages over the Atrix. The Bionic has a larger screen, a better camera, and has support for Verizon's LTE network.

The last one is a huge deal. Here is AT&T's current data coverage map. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_...-udQ/ATT coverage, blue means 3G coverage.JPG

If you go outside of the blue, you get sub 100kbps(near dial up) speeds. AT&T has no plans to have 4G anywhere outside of where they currently have 3G(the blue). Some great network huh?

Now Verizon's 3G data coverage map. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_...M/Verizon Coverage, red means 3G coverage.JPG

Anywhere in the red and you get 1mbps+ speeds. Verizon intends to have everything you see in red there be 4G LTE in 2 years.

I think network alone makes the Bionic the significantly better choice.

Now the Thunderbolt is delayed with NO ETA. LOL at anyone who thinks we'll get this before the next NFL season starts.

I think I may be hopping on over to Sprint. I'm WAY sick of the VZW games.

The network is the one advantage where I would agree with you, and that's why I mentioned it, and invited anyone interested to simply compare 3G coverage maps. AT&T reps have been making my area (southeast Idaho) empty promises of new towers and tower upgrades for years. But I have to disagree with you on the 4.3" screen being an "upgrade." A 4" QHD screen is FINALLY going to provide folks that want a sharp screen comparable to the iPhone 4 with a viable and competitive alternative. The device is also reasonably designed - not quite too huge. The 4.3" screen on the Bionic makes it even bulkier and less comfortable in the hand or pocket, and it takes away some of that sharpness. The 4.3" screen is the WORST of the downgrade of anything here anyone's complained about in my opinion. Makes it less sharp, more big and bulky, and much less pocketable.

I've already written off the Atrix's extra gadgets that impressed me at first, but cost far to much up front, and even more month to month, to justify not simply getting an even more capable windows 7 netbook - especially with dual core atom/ion combos lurking about.

Now the Thunderbolt is delayed with NO ETA. LOL at anyone who thinks we'll get this before the next NFL season starts.

I don't know if I would put too much stock in those delay rumors. I think we are still going to see Thunderbolts in people's hands before February's end. I realize we have no concrete pricing on 4G from Verizon yet, but it looks as if they intend to not copy Sprint's criticized measure (which is actually not all sprint's fault, but also Clearwire's) of forcing people to pay more for 4G even, those who can't get it or don't want it. I don't know that I would jump ship unless you're certain that it's the network you want, with the coverage and devices that will please you. The EVO pleases a lot of people, many enough to overlook the extra $10. But I cry a tear of sadness in my heart for my friends that have EVOs and can't get 4G but still have to pay for it.

Ok ... a little bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point. :)

This is just up on our own phandroid site. Very extensive nice review. It's quite positive overall. Looks like dual core processor in 2.2~2.3 is not so gimmick after all. Games, multimedia seem to benefit from it significantly. Kudos to LG for being first with dual core android phone. It kind of sucks for Verizon that Bionic is coming much later than this. Maybe CDMA version takes longer to finish.

LG Optimus 2X Review | Android Phone Fans

I was a bit skeptical of Tegra 2 performance in 2.2 before, but recent reviews like this make them elevated in my view. I will watch how Samsung Orion and Snapdragon 3 hold up against it which will come soon.

I feel the same way. I really wish this, or something like this other than the Bionic, was hitting Verizon. Heck, even the Bionic is not hitting Verizon soon enough. Verizon looks to be one of the last to get any of the new dual core beasties. What the heck... "I can haz iPhone" must be their new crown jewel and the all-consuming focus of them right now. Not really surprising I guess. AT&T was in that boat for a long time. Oh, wait, even with iPhone exclusivity, they still got a Galaxy S device before Verizon.

Actually, the LG Optimus 2X is what is currently overseas. It's Verizon cousin is the Revolution and is not a dual core (though many are holding out hope that it's official release has been pushed back to add it, but I wouldn't hold my breath).

And after seeing Wirefly's review of the Thunderbolt, I'm not really impressed with that, either. I'm more interested in seeing what concrete evidence comes the way of the Incredible 2, Droid 3 (both of which should be 4" screens, Inc2 rumored to be in white and chrome), and DX2. But if none are dual core, I don't see why I'd wait on one of them when the Bionic SHOULD be released earlier. Oh, and there's a Samsung one coming out, too.

LG Revolution is not just 2X downgraded to single core processor. It's got CDMA radio and most advanced 4G LTE modem chip that allows simultaneous voice and data communication over LTE. It's kind of LG's Thunderbolt, but better one with HDMI, DLNA out and VoLTE support. But Verizon won't turn on VoLTE service until early next year.
My only gripe with Bionic is its form factor. Right now it's the only dual core phone coming with 4G LTE support though others will follow soon.

Yep. While still single core, it's the greatest single core in town right now. Indications point to it being the same single core that is in the Thunderbolt from Qualcomm. Of course, we could be surprised before we actually start seeing test models and preorders surface. And if it's coupled with the new Adreno GPU, it will be a good bit faster than any current Galaxy S device, and hopefully with better battery life than HTC typically tends to put out on their devices. I'm excited that other than Bing, it seems very stock google so far too. This can only mean fast, clean, timely updates, and very open and encouraged development for end users on this device.

And remember guys, dual core processors' wings are still clipped by software that's likely a couple more versions away from true dual core optimization. And I'm talking about the OS and an entire app market that's still behind the curve on hardware we already have that's already considered powerful.

I actually agree with the form factor issue. I wish it looked more like the DX. The boxy straight lines have come to be Droid's calling card and give off a more masculine feel. I would prefer they kept true to that.

On that note, have you seen a picture of the Samsung Stealth? Sure looks pretty to me. I don't know if it's dual core or anything about it really.

You mean the Samsung 4G LTE phone shown at CES this year? Yeah, I saw that one too. Stealth was actually code name for it and now it became just official name. That phone is not dual core but has single core Hummingbird like Galaxy S. It has the Super AMOLED plus display which changed the pentile pixel to RGB pixel structure. So the previous text clarity issue of Super AMOLED is resolved on this display. I like to see that in person to compare with IPS LCD.

This phone is like improved Fascinate with 2.2 froyo, Super AMOLED plus. But it doesn't seem to get any love from Fascinate forum here mainly due to its hideous looking form factor, though it doesn't look too bad to me personally. But the bigger issue for that phone is the upcoming Samsung dual core flagship Galaxy S2 soon to be announced in MWC which easily shadows it.

Not subpar? Atrix set the par and the Bionic is mediocre in comparison. You do the math. I just question why the Atrix starts preorders this Sunday and has better specs. Does the Atrix not suffer from these bugs?

And why can HTC manage to manufacture and implement an LTE radio and Moto can't? I know ATT has a worse network and they don't have LTE, but even they can get a 4G chip.

Sorry, when a better phone is coming out way sooner and has better specs, there's really no argument as to the large delay.

1) No, it's not using LTE on AT&T's network.
2) HTC is not dual-core
3) Better is a subjective term - I wouldn't want an Atrix - it's a gimmick to me and something I'm not interested in...just saying. :)

Because the Atrix got 1GB RAM and webtop that makes Bionic subpar? That sounds plain stupid. These are the only two things the Atrix has over Bionic. The Atrix is missing a lot of things that the Bionic got and a lot of people are saying the Atrix is lower quality because of this. The Atrix isnt even on a real 4G network, its ATTs same old HSPA+ network that they are now marketing as 4G. And HTC can manage to implement an LTE radio because they DIDN'T PUT A DUAL CORE CPU AND HIGHER QUALITY SCREEN IN IT. Read my post more closely and I wouldn't have to repeat this. You obviously hate all of these phones and are just bringing everyone down for your tantrums. Get the hell out of here already.

Really, the guy makes a good point. Is there really a compelling reason why the Atrix (maybe) is coming out so much sooner than the Verizon version?
