Droid Eris VS Sprint Hero

Not really, they are very different phones.
1. Eris is slightly faster.
2. Eris has proximity sensor (HUGE feature missing from Hero)
3. Eris has "Bouce back" scrolling just like iphone (HUGE feature missing from Hero)
4. Eris is much more slimmer and compact and does not have the stupid bulge where the track ball is.
5. Eris button layout is far more intuitive
6. Eris has sealed screen so no dust can get under it.
7. Eris has extra features in HTC Sense UI.
8. plus more those are just the ones off the top of my head.

1.both have 288MB ram, hero has the Qualcomm MSM7200A @ 528 MHz and eris has Qualcomm MSM7600 @ 528 MHz (not saying I know the answer for sure, but aside from just going with the sequential numbers, what proof do you have one is faster than the other?)

2. not HUGE, and ive yet to touch something during a call, but Ill admit its worth some bragging right I guess.

3.who gives a crap. my instinct did it also, but I dont miss it at all, theres that little bar on the side of the screen that lets me know if I am at the bottom or not, and since my phone never freezes, I never think that because it didnt bounce back that its frozen.

4. specs I find say 4.46x2.22x.54" for the hero and 4.45x2.19x.51" for the eris, so wow, a whole 3 hundredths of an inch, just over three-quarters of a mm! and the bulge can barely be called a bulge, set it on a table and look flat across it from top to bottom and youll see its barely a bulge. and the hero has 8g(aka- just over a quarter ounce) more weight to it, its probably all battery weight. lol

5.in your oppinion, I am perfectly fine with where my phones buttons are, and I actually like the fact that they are physical buttons, for some reason I hate when EVERYTHING is a touch sensitive button.

6.my phone isnt that old Ill admit, but absolutely no dust under the screen so far

7.Im honsetly curious as to what they are, havent read specifics anywhere yet.

8.I am not trying to actually argue that the hero is better than the eris, or even that its not worse. but they are very similar, are both good phones, I dont have any problems with my hero (aside from the stock messaging app awake time thing). I responded to a lot of these points he/she made in an earlier post, yet he/she chose not to respond directly to the challenges (and I'm guessing they won't respond directly to your post either). Personally, I love my Hero and couldn't care less if someone else choses not to get it. To each his own. I find it curious though, that someone who seems to love the Eris so much more than the Hero would waste so much time posting here.

You guys have obviously not seen both phones in real life. The Eris is FAR more compact because it is tappered much much more and its slimmer slight wedge type of shape. The generic measurements in specs do not represent the VOLUME of each phone because the specs dont count tapered angles which the Eris has.

The total volume of the Eris is FAR less that the total volume of the Hero. There is no arguing here. All you have to do is go to the store and see for yourselves. The difference is SHOCKING how much more slimmer and compact the Eris is.

alright, this is the last time Im gonna post in this one, but who cares if it tapers at the edges and takes up less "volume", it doesnt make it thinner. say they are the same "max" thickness, but the eris is 3mm thinner at the edge, the narrowest place a hero can fit, take that same space and shrink it 3mm, the eris is not going to fit in there, maybe the first 1/4 inch would where its tapered, but the phone wont, and the width and height are the same too, so even though it might take up less "volume" of space, it still takes up the same "general" space. Im really not sure what one I like holding better, neither one really feels better to me, but I have big hands, so lots of phones feel pretty small in my hands.

I for one dont care which one is better and dont need to see them side by side. Its a personal preference for me.....I prefer Sprint and I much, much prefer the look of the Hero. I can live nicely without a proximity sensor and you can argue til you are blue in the face but the software on the Eris is NO quicker nor better. Haven said that....I once again say its only a matter of preference. Neither phone or carrier is better than the other.

Nice try......just checked Verizons plans online. For $40 you get 450 minutes, data is $1.99 per MB, and texts...whether incoming or outgoing are $0.20 each.

Other than the proximity sensor u havent listed any new/different features. U say the Sense UI has more features on the Eris, but u havent listed ONE. And u cant use the build quality or how slim the phone is as a feature. Thats a matter of personal preference. To u the slightly slimmer and sleaker Eris is a perfect fit, while for many others the Hero is. Same for the button lay out. Those arent features on the phone. Just differences in build. Thats like saying the color of the phone is a feature. And the hero does have bounce back, which is more of a cool lil effect than a feature. Thats as silly as calling the boot up animations a feature.

I want to know what is actually different. I have used both and looked through the menus and they honestly seem the same as far their software goes. I dont see any extra features on the Eris that i dont have on my hero.

so I was just reading up on the differences between the two phones and I must say, reading grimster's responses was my main reason for wanted to register here to put in my two cents.

I've had the Hero for almost a month now, had to get it after dropping my Palm Pre in the bathtub...fail i know. Even more fail because I didn't have insurance...

Anyways, my co-worker got an Eris last week so ofcourse we've been playing with each others phones and arguing back and forth and who's is better. And you know what? Neither has anything to argue about. As its been said before, its all in your preferences.

Personally, I like the feel of the Eris better, it DOES feel slimmer in your hand, makes it feel like you are closer to the screen itself...if that makes sense...

However, I wouldn't say one is the more 'refined' version of the other. If you like the 100% touch screen, then go with the Eris. But personally, having an onscreen back button is a PITA when you're web browsing, for flicking through text. I find the Hero's physical keys better in that regard. I certainly wouldn't call the Eris more INTUITIVE, its different. If you want INTUITIVE, try using the Pre's gestures, you dont accidently go back or forward or home doing that.

I will agree with you though, that the proximity sensor is something that I REALLY miss. For some people this very well could be the deal breaker...but do you know what else is a deal breaker for most people? Battery life. I saw that as a trade off. Was the sensor worth losing that much battery for? If you want to call a third of a mm a BIG difference when talking about size, then the difference from a 1300 and 1500 is HUGE, especially for today's smartphones.

The way I see it, Eris is a more 'omg this is my first touchphone' friendly device. Its slimmer, and cuter. But if you're the type that likes to use be on the phone constantly with e-mails and texts and web browsing, you'd be crazy to turn down battery life.

Another deal breaker for those it matters to...yes sprint comes with extra software that you might not like...but personally, they are VERY useful. Sprint's Navigation app is one of the best turn by turn apps i've used, and its FREE. Does everything TomTom and others do and is very simple. But I mean...google's Google Map Navigation is coming out soon, so this might not be an issue then. But its definitely nice to have.

If you're an NFL or Nascar fan, guess what, Sprint is a direct sponsor, so you have direct free access to games that may not be shown locally (NFL Network games can be seen live on your phone). Verizon charges you for this kind of stuff.

Not to mention that Sprint throws in FREE visual voicemail, not included with verizon. (also the $20 difference in monthly plans)

Two phones on different providers? Different case will be given out. The internals will most likely be exactly the same, and the software that comes on it will be stock HTC + Carrier's add ons.

I hope some arguments about the Eris realize that Erises are running 1.6 and heros are running 1.5... so that might change the color and proximity sensor argument?

Though, the feel of the Eris IS nicer for me, since my jean pants are kinda tight (Raw Denims), I'm sticking with my Hero because the sprint plan is that much cheaper.

1. Sorry the Hero screen dust issue is not a QA issue. Its simply how the screen is designed and thats that.
5. The Eris does NOT run the EXACT same UI setup as Sprint Hero. Its more refined and the reason why its abit faster than Sprint Hero.

The Eris has an issue with the screen getting dust beneath it also. The reason you haven't heard about it yet is because there aren't enough of them being carried around in pockets long enough to be a common complaint...yet. Just read a poster talk about getting it under his/her Eris within the past few days.

is that an android thing though, because the droid is 16M colors, but the new htc phone going to verizon is only 262k colors because its not running 2.0, android 1.6 only supports 262k colors while 2.0 supports 16M colors.

could the hero only support 65k colors because its running 1.5 (I know the eris is too, but technically 1.6 is what added cdma support, so maybe verizon had htc work in some support for more colors in there phone, since they obviously had to back port some cdma stuff to 1.5 to make the phones work, could they have back ported visual settings as well from 1.6 to 1.5 on the eris and no the hero?

Yes, Android 1.5 only supports 65K color resolution, but the spec page on HTC's website CLEARLY state the Sprint HTC Hero has a display capacity of 262K colors. Once the Hero gets the 2.0 update, the full resolution will be utilized.

Sprint's network is faster than Verizon. Check phonedog or endgadget. They have done several test that have proven that Sprint's 3G is faster than Verizon's. Also, they have the same exact coverage area. They entered into a deal in 2006 that allows them to roam on each others network and use full 3G coverage. Sprint, has greater coverage in rural areas and Verizon has greater coverage in urban areas. They entered into an agreement that created the largest network in the US.

So as far as the Eris and the Hero go it is a matter of preference. I for one will take Sprint and their pricing.

I used to agree and it seemed to be true.. Then I got the Hero for work and the Eris for personal. I loaded speedtest.net on both and was very surprised. Verizon averaged at least double on every test. That is the first time in my area(Albany, NY) that a Verizon phone beat one of my Sprint phones in a speed test.

Oh, and the Eris' processor is a slightly newer one..

Really, just proximity sensor, capacitive buttons instead of physical, smaller trackball, more colors(18 bit? instead of 16), and newer processor(it's not the same, I looked.)

Oh, and with Sprint, you get NFL mobile, Sprint TV, and Sprint Nav..
