Droid X in pieces :)

So the other day I discovered an evil piece of dust under the glass in my Droid X. First thing that crossed my mind was, I will never be able to get a replacement because they are back ordered for a month.

So, naturally I took it apart haha. It wasn't as hard as I thought. The most annoying parts are the clips holding the two halves together and the stupid black sticky tape they use to cover up some of the ribbon connections.

Once the phone was completely in pieces, I used a clean coffee filter (no lint) and wiped down both sides of the glass. Luckily the dust was on the glass itself and not the digitizer. After scrutinizing the glass for 20 minutes I reassembled the phone.

The best part was when the phone did not turn back on  so I took it apart to see if I put it together wrong. I'm still not positive on what caused it to not work but I think it was the little white wire that connects two of the PCB's under the camera hump. I think that when I put the back case back on it popped the wire off.

Next time I held the power button, it turned on normally and I cheered! :D
So yes, the phone works fine now and not a single thing was broken (aside from some of that black sticky tape). And all of the dust is gone!

Moral of the story: Don't take your phone apart to remove dust from under the glass. It's not worth it. I almost died inside but it was fun!

Glad everything worked out but umm... my Verizon tech person ordered another Droid X for me on Sunday and it's going to arrive to me tomorrow...

hahaha. that story raised my heart rate by 15bpm. thanks for sharing! good to know it can be done, because dust under the screen would drive me up the wall.

Well if I was having problems with my speaker I probably would have bored it out haha but I have not had a single problem with any aspect of my DX except for that dust under the screen. Which is also why I didn't want to have it replaced. I was afraid that the next one would have one of the problems that everybody has been mentioning.

I was going to move this thread to the sub-forum named "unwise" but couldn't find one. :p

Wow all that for dust? My screen gets dirty fast and I would never be able to see dust on my screen. How big was this dust for you to see it?

I didn't post any pics because of that video and guide. They all look the same :P

The dust made it look like I had a bunch of dead pixels, except they were there when the screen was off. It drove me insane!

really not much different from a laptop teardown. actually, it seems to be a bit easier. it's smaller, but there are fewer steps to removing the case. good to know it's so well fit together in case anything ever ends up under the screen.

You're a brave man.

You won't have to wait a month lol. I just went to the verizon store today, and they ordered me a new one. 2 day wait.

But you got balls for doing that haha.

The IDIOT in the video removed the battery pull tab and expects us to think he's and expert of tearing a phone down? :)

Ooops............. there's the pull tab :)

I must say, the phone is extremely well designed. It has multiple locations where if they aren't touching the proper contacts built into the case, it won't run because it knows it is open to some degree. Remove one piece and the phone will know and refuse to boot. It's really quite awesome.
