Epic vs Evo

And having owned both for quite a while, the more I used the Epic's screen, the more I appreciated the depth of color over the sheer size of the Evo's screen. I'd have a tough time going back to a normal backlit lcd after owning the Epic.

I believe you are confusing the color gamut with depth- both the Evo and the Epic have 24bit displays. And the Epic actually displays fewer colors in it's browser and gallery apps- 16bits (due to a issue in 2.1), so for color depth, Evo is the way to go for now (although 2.2 should fix it for Epic).

And the color gamut and saturation that is much discussed... makes colors "pop", but is too high just as inaccurate as too small a gamut and saturation. The Droid has the best lcd in the displaymate test, iirc (Evo not tested).

Sorry captain literal. How about richness, contrast, black levels? I'll take a little inaccuracy over washed out color even if it has more "depth". And there's a company making an app giving us control over the color. Why it took so long to bring about control like we have on tv screens is beyond me.

And this is where Samsung can easily fix this with future updates, maybe with the upcoming 2.2 update. Samsung is just scratching the surface with the Super AMOLED potential and GPU/CPU. I actually downloaded Transformers via Media Hub just to see how it works...and the movie looks fabulous! It will be my show-n-tell movie on my phone. (On a side note, Media Hub sucks! The downloaded took a good 6 hours to complete via Wifi...and it took several tries before it even started to download!)

I stand by my comment earlier...at this time, the hardware is way ahead of the EVO (and pretty much every other phone on the market), but the software sucks. So, here's hoping that Samsung does it right by year's end with the Froyo update.

For me, if i did not like a phone, then i would probably return it and move on. I don't know why some people would want to hang onto something that they dislike. Oh well.

It'll be nice to see the next round of HTC phones with the scorpion processor and how it fairs against the Galaxy line. And wasn't samsung revealing some new phone this week? It's funny the new Desire Z line will have better internals than the Evo. Even funnier how they seemed to screw them up though with an even smaller battery. I really don't get the mfg's at times. They take two steps forward and one step back every time. For once I'd like to see someone take two steps foward and just plant their feet.

Sorry captain literal.

yeah, god forbid we use the words that we actually mean, especially when the replacement word you used actually means something important when it comes to displays. ;)

How about richness, contrast, black levels? I'll take a little inaccuracy over washed out color even if it has more "depth".
- contrast ratio is rated outstanding by displaymate, and screen bright contrast rating as very good (but not better than the top lcd displays).
- black levels are unmatched
- richness... you're probably talking color gamut and saturation- both way high
- we're not talking a "little" inaccuracy- it's a whole lot.

And this is where Samsung can easily fix this with future updates, maybe with the upcoming 2.2 update.

the color depth issue is an issue with android 2.1 itself, and should be fixed in 2.2 the rest, i wouldn't expect an update- heck, one of the things the fanbois get all excited about is the (over)saturated, inaccurate colors. ;)

For me, if i did not like a phone, then i would probably return it and move on. I don't know why some people would want to hang onto something that they dislike. Oh well.

I like my phone. That doesn't mean I'm going to go gaga over it and say it's better than everything else out there, especially when comparing specific features, and especially when it is NOT better in those features. :D

Interesting!

I can take my Epic off the charger at 8:00am, and still have battery left when I put it back on the charger at around midnight.

My wife has to plug her Evo in at work during the day. She doesn't stand a chance of making it through a full day on a charge.

Out of curiosity, which Epic firmware are you running? are you running the latest Epic firmware (DI18)? The previous update (the number escapes me right now) introduced some pretty serious battery issues that they fixed in the most recent one.

Slyferret is right.

My brother has the Evo, I have the Epic. We can easily tell that the Epic has better battery life.

Poundsound, from reading, your posts, you fooled me!

HanMan...don't tell PoundSound that! It is just not possible that the Epic is better than Evo in anything. :-)

I've said from the beginning that they're both good phones, and I prefer the hardware keyboard and Swype, so what makes you think I believe that the Epic isn't better at anything- the fact that I don't think it's better at everything? Me thinks you're taking your Epic love a little too personally. ;)

so i read earlier that the evo had swype but it was only beta.

so now thats its october. does the evo still have swype?

Well, i do like my phone a lot...but i don't seem to be the one that criticizes it every chance i get.... ;)

And it is pretty clear that your large battery life disparity in favor of EVO is either your own doing or imaginary....

oh, i have a LOT more chances than this thread, but i don't bring it up. but this IS a evo / epic comparison thread. :D do you have both phones? :D

either that or it just doesn't match your preconceived notions and unsupported biases (like you're apparent thought that amoled universally uses less power) and you can't quite grock that. :p

Actually, PS, i also mentioned the superior Hummingbird as having better efficiency. Like i said, your LARGE discrepancy in battery life is unheard of! Others have both phones like you do not notice what you claim...and neither have the many reviewers of both phones. It has nothing to do with preconceived notions or biases...it is just not possible unless you're making it up or, well, you're making it up.

Having both phones in the family, I agree that both are fantastic devices and you really can't go wrong either way. To address battery life. From our less than scientific obsevations, the claim that the Epic has a battery life advantage over the Evo just isn't true. When both phones are in very good signal areas, the Epic gets slightly better battery life, but it's not earth shaking. OTH, when in poor signal areas, the Evo gets considerably better battery life. My wife works in TV and the broadcast facility she works in has very low signal. Her old Pre would drain in a couple of hours. With the Epic, she can get maybe 4-5 hours with no use at all, just the normal email/twitter/sms background stuff. She borrowed my Evo to see if there was any difference and found that she could easily go a whole 8+hr shift with virtually the same background processes. Now this is just 2 phones and can't possibly represent the entire lines, but both phones seem to function well within the norm under regular circumstances. Personally, I think for most the battery life of these 2 phones are equivalent and battery life shouldn't be a deciding value in making a choice between them.

dunno if this point was mentioned earlier in the thread but amoleds use more power when displaying a white background than typical LCDs. so if you browse the internet a lot, your phone will have significantly worse battery life. amoled power savings come from displaying darker colors.

Dude, are you kidding me? You don't read the posts right *HERE* and see that battery life varies DRASTICALLY?

To address battery life. From our less than scientific obsevations, the claim that the Epic has a battery life advantage over the Evo just isn't true.

This isn't a true / false question. Experiences vary (as your wife has seen herself), which i've pretty explicitly stated in my previous posts. :D

Slyferret is right.

How about some details about the battery life, how much is better? Are you comparing the battery usage statistics? Idle and standby percentages? Hard to compare battery life unless the phones are being used the same or usage stats are being compared. I set my wifes Epic to the exact same settings as my Evo (CDMA Auto, Stocks and News Sync OFF, Off with haptic feedback and all Vibration) and it's not even close, and I use my phone more. I regularly get 24 hours with Cell Standby and Idle in the mid low 20% range. She can't get home from work without charging.

Our experience is totally the opposite and I'm really trying to fix it, but the Epic's battery is poor from our experience.

yeah, most people who claim battery life is way better for one phone than the other just don't get it.

My battery life on my Evo is 10x better now than it was when it was set at factory settings. All other things being equal, like reception and usage patterns. So, I'd argue it's quite impossible to say which device has better battery life without doing some seriously CONTROLLED experiments.

alright alright alright....
both phones suck!!!

nah jk
I had my evo since launch day. Awesome fast phone.
Be that as it may.. I am one who gets tired of my toys
after lil bit. Wanted to try something new. The screen is what turned me onto the epic
Showing 16m colors, as my 17" Dreamcolor display on my laptop (made in colaboration for Dreamworks Studios to display most accurate color. Desktop Dreamcolor monitors display over 1 Billion colors) and I use that to my advantage when I do work in my CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3.
**what i loved about it
HTC
sense
big ole screen
android 2.2
sex appeal
kickstand
hdmi
all touch form
HUGE DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
durable (dropped it ear height and survived magnificantly)
takes awesome pics (OK video) dual flash (albeit tooo bright in some cases)
slim
the phone worked as it was designed to
**what i do not like
tug of war with hotspot/4g I use this alot all day every day
cant have charging with notifications
studders alot, especially on 4g

I only had the epic for a few hours and haven't broke surface yet (i have not yet installed the MR let)
but so far
**what i love about it
SAMOLED!!!
super blacks and super colors
sex appeal
awesome pics (not better than evo) and video w/ sound! (even with no flash, epic hands down superior on video!)
graphics processing
Lots of camera options
great strong vibrator (;
native divx support
16gb storage card, sd card adapter; needed this!, cool headphones,
seems just as fast as my evo on android 2.2
better version of swype (maybe the settings i had on the evo version made it annoying)
dedicated camera key
quick access to vita system components through notification bar (myspace as option to feed sync)
**what i dont like
no gps update weather clock
3g speed sucks for upload (luckily I get the most excellent 4g speed at home.get anywhere from 2mbps to 13.5mbps rate. just now pulled a 9.3mbps writing this)
slow charging (drains playing on it and or while talking, during charge also, takes years to charge)
no hdtv out
moving parts (slider/keyboard, I have not and will not use the keyboard)
android 2.1

Seems like a fair comparison... So, which one do you like better between them?

Thank you, there are some things I miss about the evo.
Even with any differences, overall I still pick the epic.
And a plus, things will get better on 2.2 while some things may be addressed aswell.

I haven't read page 3, because I really got tired of reading. I had the Evo for about 3 weeks, then it started doing funny things. Like the screen would flip back and forth on it's own like i was swiping the home screens really fast, or when i was typing random letters would start typing really fast. It was pretty annoying. So I switched to the Epic. I must say, I do like the colors alot better, which I liked before, but when comparing youtube videos at the store not on wifi, the vids looked terrible on the Epic. I later found out, that it runs the videos on a lower power mode when not on wifi like the first iphone used to do. But when it comes down to it, I do like the Epic more this is my likes for both. I like Sense on the Evo. being able to change homescreen profiles on the fly was nice. I also liked their widgets and animations (mainly the weather). And it does have a few more extra features than the Epic which I do like. Screen clarity goes to the Epic. Only the iPhone 4 can compare to it. Web browsing, Evo only because the Epic does not have Android 2.2 yet. Typing goes to the Epic. The evo always frustrated me putting the damn arrow buttons right next to space, there would be so many times I would hit that, and completely mess up my messages. I don't use the slide out keyboard a lot on the Epic because I'm so used to touch screen coming from 2 iphones, but when I do, I'm glad I have it. I like swype also, but it slows me down more than just pressing the screen to type. Apps goes to the Epic, I don't know which apps may work for one phone or the other, but because of the Epic's screen, they look way more beautiful on the epic, and maybe the size do matter because they don't look stretched out either. Battery life, compared to my iPhone, they both suck equally. I think I get a little bit more out of the Epic though. But I solved my battery life problem by going on Amazon, and buying 2 extra batteries. I have a wall charger that slowly charges one battery while I keep a full one on my phone and a full one in my pocket. That seems to work out fine, and when I can I still use my car charger. Bluetooth connectivity, this frustrates me to no end with the android phones. I have the Jawbone Icon, and loved it on my iphone. I turn it on, it connects and shows me a battery my phone, and always worked. On the Evo, I turn it on, that thing would never connect. It sometimes didn't even want to pair. It would pair, then not find the device. It was such a PITA. The Epic, it was a little better, it mostly always connected when I learned that I had to turn on the always connect option on the phone. The problem is, when I answer the phone, sometimes I can't hear anything out of it, I have the pres the button on the bluetooth and sometimes that works, and sometimes it just hangs up on the person. Email and voicemail Goes to the Evo, it was always on time with my emails. I never had a problem with it. The Epic however, alerts me when it chooses. Which is pretty annoying when it may go the whole day without alerting me, then at the end of the day, I have like 30-40 emails I have to delete and then it sends more. Voicemail on both sucks. Why does it not play through the bluetooth? Overall, I am happier with the epic. I actually think the smaller size is more of a perfect fit for my hand than the bigger Evo, even though I have big hands. And for those of you thinking about screen protectors, my opinion is this, they are not necessary unless you are really clumsy. I stopped using them when I got my second iPhone, and it never cracked (which screen protects don't protect it from anyway) except a small chip in the corner outside the light radius, and it never scratched. I had one on my Evo (invisible shield) the week before i traded it back in (2 weeks with no protection at all). The protector got scratched up from being in my pocket, and my keys being in there with it. the glass on the other hand had no problems before, and my Epic has no problems now. If you are clumsy, then a rubberized casing that doesn't allow the screen to slide across the ground is all you need.
