Eris not getting 2.1 today

+1 Frisco you beat me to it... But that would have been nice to give the eris the update first since the droid gave them such a hard time

Well I do believe the Droid came first on the market.

Could be wrong, I was not paying attention when it first came out as I was happy with my other device.

Meanwhile, we now have seen a big step in the anticipated update for Eris: rollout for Droid. Many here were wondering if it was going to come around at at all. Now they can stop worrying, it appears.

Actually the Droid and Droid Eris were released on the same day. November 6th. The day I purchased my Droid Eris. But, the Droid has always been Verizon's Android flagship product. I was pretty confident we would never see an update to 2.1 before the Droid did. It really bugs me because we are running such an old version. But, that is life I guess. This is the phone we chose. The best phone I have ever owned.

I sure hope they release the 2.1 update soon. I am one of the holdouts waiting for OTA.

I dont thin that the droids update rolled out because if it did at least one other person would have been able to confirm and im sure that someone would have took a picture of the message but then again allmost every droid owner is rooted and there roms dont check for OTA updates

The first wave of Droid updates only went out to 1,000 phones. The next wave tonight at 11:59PM EDT will send the update to 9,000 more phones. I think tomorrow more Droid owners will be saying they got updated.

It sounds like it can take about a week to update all of the Droids. That just means we are at least a week out from getting our 2.1 update.

Of course, Verizon could try sending out both updates at the same time. I am not sure if they would try that or not.

But that update is for the moto droid, not HTC eris. Anyone have news on when the eris update is coming or it's all still speculation at this point?

Kind of annoying the droid got its 2.0 update and now the 2.1 ota update without the eris getting so much as a bugfix :/

It'll be the 31st for another 18 hours here, so there's hope.

Plus, just to play "Devil's Advocate", I've never been in a compay that did their quarters by calendar date (i.e. March 31st), but rather by week. So the quarter probably doesn't end until Friday

Just sayin'......

Well when I hear dates by quarter, I think of q1 as being oct-dec. But I guess it's different for cell phone companies lol

I think thy will roll ours out when they do the black out for the moto droids so that way when we have our black out droid will release 200,000 copies and then so will we the next day after that

BTW no update

I have absolutely no proof but based on the date of the leaks that we are using and the fact that both are nearly ready to go OTA (especially the latest), I'm betting that the update is sitting there waiting for Droid to get rolled out and then we get ours. Beginning today, it gets rolled out to 200,000 people per day. The Droid's should be blanketed within a couple of weeks. April 15th is a good prediction IMO.

Edit: Forgot to add...the Droid users have 12 hours to update before being forced. Another thing is that the link to the OTA version of Droid 2.1.2 was found early on and people can get their update straight from Google.

Edit #2: Okay..last edit. The Droid file was only 13mb. It didn't wipe any files or settings. 13Mb is not as much to push as over 100 Mb's that our leaked OS's have been.

That is very interesting for this reason. From version 1.5 the 2.1 upgrade will be huge, naturally. But for 2.0 (or whatever Droid had) to 2.1 it is small.
So that begs the question, will we leak runners only be required to d/l 13Mb and therefore not have our stuff wiped as the poor 1.5'ers?

Well, the file size just may be smaller for us but I believe that it will be the same as the 1.5 users because we are using a beta OS in which files will need to be replaced in order to have the same integrity as those upgrading from 1.5.

As for being wiped...I just don't see that happening from a logistics standpoint. I believe that if OTA were going to wipe every users phone and cause them to start over, Verizon would not even offer the update. Instead, there will either be some type of built in backup to keep your settings or the upgrade can roll into the existing file structure.

If you think about it, in the past, the MR1 and MR2 updates didn't affect settings if it was done OTA but your phone was wiped if you downloaded and applied the file from pcdphones.com. Why? I don't know.

Point 1. I wonder if they can just look at the fact we have 2.1 already and just update what is needed? I doubt there is much different in the OTA.

Point 2. They have to wipe the phone, imo. All the apps are different. I think that is a major dilemma on their part. How do they tell Frisco?

Point 3. Wipes my theories to shit. But you never know, we could be sitting pretty.

this is like comparing a windows update to a windows install, two completely different fruits.
the OTA is written as an update to append to an already existing setup.
the leaks are full out installs. the only thing required is the base boot loader provided by the rom to install it much like running an install of any OS onto a new system. and with that the installer assumes that anything existing on the system is either hosed or unformatted space.

I doubt that they would put out three OTA's, one for 1.5, one for 2.1v1 leak, and a third for 2.1v2 leak. I have also read on other sites, though I don't remember which ones, that the OTA will not be received if you have the leak, which kind of makes since because it would have to be a different update.

I won't disagree. The maintenance releases can be thought of as service packs that Microsoft releases on it's Windows products. However, you also have to keep in mind that "In Place" upgrades are offered between windows versions. The files are copied to a temp place on your hard drive and they systematically overwrite your old files while saving your settings, programs, icons, files, etc. I don't understand Linux enough to know the applicability of the above.

Sir Eagle...we're not saying that there will be different updates. In fact, there will certainly be just one OTA file released and it will be designed to work with 1.5 and will hopefully overwrite files successfully with the leaked builds without us having to manually install the OTA over the leaks. The OTA will be designed to look at the files already on the phone. If the files are older than the OTA files, then the OTA will install. If not, then it's a no-go but then why would we want an older build of a file anyway? Hope this makes sense.

Edit: I have to say that if OTA rolls into our leaked versions without wiping the phone, I will likely get the legit OTA link and wipe my phone anyway. I like "clean" upgrades.
