Eris to v2.x, when?

Assuming new OS 2.1 might erase data, what is best way to back up Apps? Will SD card data be safe? Or back up on computer (how?)?

There is a tip in the stuck tips and tricks thread in this section, check that out.

Yes, i believe the tester is for real.

Clicked the link, read a couple of threads, and guess what I found...

LOL

I started out there in my quest for Droid enlightenment. The Eris section was pretty dead though. I ended up coming here and liking it much better. :D I love the fact that I feel like I can be myself here.

The video certainly looks like the real deal. The only issue I have with is is the lock screen. So help me, if we get stuck with the same half-baked lock screen that we've been stuck with on 1.5, I'm going to be sorely disappointed. I can't keep using LockBot, it's too limiting. Give me a grown-up lock screen, for the love of Christ!

The lock screen on the Eris is part of Sense. What don't you like about it? Personally I love the integration it has with the music player.

I don't like the fact that you can unlock the lock screen by hitting the menu button. This has caused numerous false dials for me.

Oh and anyone that gets and update that messes up their phone can do a manual update

Anyone that has had a problem with an upgrade can always downgrade back to the older version and retry the OTA update.

How to manually update your Droid Eris | Android Central

I had my phone go really screwy and downgraded it a while back and did the update in stages. This will wipe all data on the phone so back it up first.

once you do that it'll do any of the updates that have already been pushed to the phone.

Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC America Technical Support via E-Mail with your inquiry about Android 2.1 being available for the Verizon Wireless DROID ERIS by HTC. My name is A.J. and I will be happy to assist you today.

I understand how important it is for you to have the latest software updates for your device. At this time, Verizon has confirmed that Android 2.1 will be available OTA for the Verizon Wireless DROID ERIS by HTC within the first 6 months of this year. Currently, this is the only information I have available about the update. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

I do love the music player integration, but I don't see why that has to be limited to that particular lock screen, nor am I sure that it's tied to Sense--I have the same lock screen/music player integration regardless of whether I'm running Sense or Home (and I haven't been running Sense for a few weeks).

My issue is, with the lock screens on the iPhone and Android 2.X, there's a small, about half-inch-square area that can be touched to unlock the screen, and it has to be slid sideways--a combination of touch-movement less likely to be accidentally replicated in a pocket. With the 1.5 lock screen, it's a wide band, and it's slid downward. For me personally, this results in a great many accidental unlocks in the pocket. It's gotten leaps and bounds better with that last upgrade (now that you actually have to touch the bar, not just the entire screen--with that, my thigh was unlocking my phone CONSTANTLY), but it still feels sloppy to me, and I still get many more accidental unlocks than I do when running lockbot, or when I had my iPhone.

But then again, it might just be the movement of my sexy hips, the phone can't help but unlock itself.

What? Nevermind.

The other issue is that the "Menu" button also unlocks the screen; I can see why some might want that, but it needs to be configurable so that it's possible to let only the swipe actually unlock the phone. I think that's the source of many of my pocket unlocks. I do put the phone in upside down, with the screen toward me; that may cause fewer false swipes when pulling it out.

But I agree that I'd like the option of a side swipe in the native lock screen (in addition to the Menu disable)

On the Eris you could also enable the "swipe pattern" security feature. This adds a step to unlocking but is's easy to get used to and prevents the accidental unlocks. You may not want the extra steps but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I found this a couple of hours ago, maybe someone has already posted, but thought it to be interesting and informative; teasing in a way...

IT IS FROM ANOTHER FORUM SITE:

http://www.androidguys.com/2010/02/18/halfbaked-android-21-leaks-select-droid-eris-handsets/

We're hearing from a number of places that some Droid Eris owners are getting an OTA update. The good news is that this is the Androidhttp://www.androidguys.com/2010/02/18/halfbaked-android-21-leaks-select-droid-eris-handsets/ 2.1 update they've been waiting for. The bad news is that it appears to be nowhere near complete. According to reports, Sense UI disappears, users cannot log into their Google accounts, and apps and data is being wiped. Verizon tells Engadget that "the Eris update to a 'newer' Android is still in testing and hasn't yet been officially released." Sounds like something slipped through the cracks and has affected a few folks.
For now, Droid Eris owners are advised to back up anything vital to the memory card or put it in the cloud. Also, be cautious of any updates over the next few days.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in to us.

I would like to see the update but not because I have to be on the bleeding edge (wouldnt have bought an eris ;) ) but because there seems to be some quirks with this phone like the battery issues and another I noticed in low signal areas where my storm showed a bar the Eris showed NOTHING, yet I was able to make a call with no issues?? Hoping these kind of things get cleared up nothing more.

it actually downgraded though? i heard reports that you can not downgrade.

yes, it wipes the whole rom and puts the old one on. no problem at all. After I did that I immediately got the notification for the latest released update. My new eris was having issues with the GPS not locking onto any satellites so I wanted to downgrade and wipe the whole rom to see if it was something I did. The trick is to use the manual install that is the whole rom and not just the update.

Once the phone is rooted you can also use that manual process to un-root :)

Talked to a guy at the Verizon store today (getting a battery replacement for my eris) and he said that the update would be next month, along with the release of a new Motorola Android phone...
