Eris to v2.x, when?

Ok. I just signed up, but I have been lurking for a long time. NKT has now sparked my interest and I have to ask a couple questions.

NKT:

1) Does the new ROM include Live Wallpapers?
2) How about an updated lock screen? Can you switch?
3) How about the new home screen being used on the Nexus One? Can you switch? Does Home Switcher work?

1. No.
2. Same stock lock screen. Meaning you can change it the same way you can now.
3. The home screen as before. They didn't use anything from the N1. They did introduce Leap which is the pinch-zoom type screen switcher you can see in the vid.

NKT - you've been living with 2.1 for a few days now - could you provide a more indepth review - i.e. run down and impression of all new features, battery life, new widgets, changes to UI - any issues or problems, does it stutter, how are the haptic buttons under 2.1 (many peoople have problems with delays and slow response under 1.5), changes in 3G 1X coverage, etc, etc....

Can't dish out too much at this time, but suffice to say I think most people will be happy with the upgrade. Adding Nav, Leap, and a few other improvements make the Eris THE best entry level Android set out.

Now, there are always people who NEED to have animated wallpapers, and NEED to have this or that... If you NEED those, get a different phone. That's the beauty of choice ;)

That made me lol :D

NKT - I know with 1.5 that when the phone searches for signal it eats the battery. Does this seem to be fixed with 2.1?

That happens with any phone. As your receive signal drops the phone has to ramp up it's power to keep it's connection. You can see this in DEBUG mode. That will eat battery like there's no tomorrow. Also, if you're in a handoff area (850 to 1900, or a poorly planned RF environment) you're phone will bounce between carriers. This can drain the battery also.

I think people have a good idea of how to save battery life on their Erii now as evidenced by the thread in these forums.

Well, really...

People already complain about some lag here and there on the Eris. But they want all these processor and memory hogs running on their phones so they cay say "Dude, check out this wallpaper... it moves!!!"

The Eris doesn't need it. It's already a hot little phone.

See thats the only one i was really hoping for, don't get me wrong i will not complain when i get the goodness but i was pulling for some more screens on the vanilla side.

There were rumors that they were going to add home screens to the Moto 2.1 update. But the people I know who have it, it doesn't.

"Dude, check out this wallpaper... it moves!!!"

Interesting, I noticed in your video that it did have an animation for the weather (snowflakes moving down the screen). So was that just an upgrade to the weather widget?

Yes, it's only for the weather widget. When the phone comes out of sleep or right after you add the widget it does a little animation in relation to the displayed weather. Snowing - it will snow on your screen. Cloudy - it will cloud up on your screen.

Necessary, now. Neat to see the first time, you bet! :D

Are we gonna get 3.0 when it comes out?

{Ducking for cover}

;)

don't even mention anything past 2.1 yet.
As I've stated in other threads I have a strong feeling that as bottom tier Android phone at Verizon and the N1 and Incredible(and devour) coming out this might be the last update we see. Who knows, maybe HTC won't throw us to the curb but not to worry, soon as we get root we won't need updates anymore.

You can expect the Droid is going to have updates until the next big phone(Droid2/Shadow) comes out. This is one of the reasons I have a poll in the Verizon forum asking what phone do people think will sit on top at Verizon. The N1 is Google's baby, The Droid is Verizon's (not motorola's) baby. Will HTC start touting the Incredible as their shining star? And what about Motorola? They have the Devour with Motoblur coming to Verizon, will it get bumped up to 2.1 too?

Froyo is already in the works, but are we gonna get it?

Could someone explain the statement about 3 vs 5 screens on the vanilla Eris,

Kinda confused as I have 7 if we are talking about the same thing or is this a Sense vs Android difference

He's talking about with Sense disabled.

HTC Sense UI has seven, but standard Android home only has 3.

The deal is (I think) that 2.1 was supposed to extend that to 5.

1. No.

I really hate that I was right on this, but it seemed more likely than not.

With root maybe we will have a custom 2.1 rom before verizon/htc push the official update.

...I dont know how long it takes to cook up a rom
