Root Evo 4G 2.3 rooting question.

hey guys, hopefully I'm not out of place making this thread, I ran a forum search and didn't find anything that really pertained to my question, so posting a new thread seems to be the best option. Anyway, on to my question.

I'm new to android phones, and new to rooting. My question is, can I root an Evo 4G but keep the stock Gingerbread build of Android? All I am looking to do right now is uninstall some of the Sprint apps, and run the mobile hotspot mods. Is this possible. Thanks in advance!

there is currently no exploit found for the gingerbread update. the new update gave you a new hboot which is not rootable yet. just stay tuned here. you will know when we will have root again.

As Ocn said, there is not root exploit yet found for the new hboot that came with the OTA from Sprint. When it is found though, you will be able to keep the stock rom and freeze/delete most of the Sprint bloatware if you choose. There are wifi tether for root apps that will allow you to use your phone as a hotspot once you can root it or you can flash a number of custom roms that do both things you want to accomplish.

Oh good, I'm not looking to do a full out custom Rom just yet, just looking to increase my control over the stock ROM to get my feet wet. Thanks for the quick replies guys! I really appreciate it.

Side question...how does a thread search not reveal the 300 "can I root ginger bread" threads? :)

We need to fix our search function lol

I just did a quick search of "root gingerbread." Guess what, lots of relevant thread came up. Well, I am not going to comment on this part since I want to be a nice guy XD

I am so eager for the root to come out. Does anyone hear any news from the developer?

nope, i keep checking over on xda every day and every hour if i can. if news of an exploit comes out, they will be the first to let us know.

Yeah I wasn't picking on anyone just saying we have like 100 versions of this thread now lol

If you recall guys, my question was not only could Gingerbread be rooted, but could i root it and keep the stock rom, I got plenty of threads asking if Gingerbread could be rooted, but none that said anything about tweaking a stock rom.

Android Forums: "Unrevoked currently only works on hboot 2.10 and lower. I believe the new hboot is 2.15(not verified yet) and might not work on that one til they find an exploit."

Per tgruendler on XDA: "As soon as the update was available, Haux had the rooted version ready to be flashed within hours."

So is there an a way to apply the update to a rooted EVO 4G? Is there an exploit and where might I find it?

There is no exploit yet to allow unrevoked to root the new hboot(2.16). They will find it but how long is unknown.

You can apply the update by flashing the rooted rom and the updated radios found here: [ROM][STOCK] 4.24.651.1 - Odexed & De-Odexed - xda-developers and here: [ Radios ][ 6-3 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

The only thing that would not happen by flashing those it that your hboot would not be upgraded which you don't want anyway so that you can retain root.

Thats sucks GB ran great on my phone for about a week or so then went to shit. Im tired of the constant HTC reboot screen and software phone app drawer and + key constantly popping up on the right side of my screen instead of along the bottom. It sucks that they half assed the update and customers are the ones paying for it. I would have gladly waited for a few weeks to see a more polished update show up.

Its really pushing me towards getting a Photon 4G as soon as it comes out and I can upgrade.

not me unless motorolla unlocks their bootloader. if it is not rootable, not going to get it.

I'm not all that into rooting and mostly keep it stock as long as the system is stable. It's obvious something is wrong with the GB software update on EVOs and causes the constant reboots coming out of apps and that's why I want to root my phone.

I've heard something about been able to revert back 2.2 and then rooting. Is that even possible?

How do they even find the exploit? Probably more to it than just running it through a pen test program... They probably have to do analysis of the code?

Not to be a jerk, but wouldn't knowing that GB cannot be rooted, render the last part of your question irrelevant?

You can mess with the stock rom though, if you have root access.

check this out. novox77 provided this irc chat with teamwin. and looks like they may have found an exploit for the evo 3d. unfortunately it looks like it is device specific. so people with an unrooted evo may still have to wait longer. but who knows what they may find once the dust settles.

Not at all, I know gingerbread will be root-able soon, and I was toying with the idea of rooting my phone, (call me crazy) but I really like how the stock rom runs, I just want to do a few minor tweaks.

I did not read up but have you been rooted previously? If not, you will be very surprised at how well some of the custom 2.3 roms run as compared to the stock rom. Once you go custom, you will never go back to stock.

Yeah Ive played around on a few of them on my cousins phone. Idk which one he was using. Is there a thread somewhere comparing all of them? I was planning on either Evio or CM7 based on all the positive reviews Ive heard about them but a comparison of their features and reliability would be nice.

i tried rooting my HTC EVO 4G (2.3.3) using unrevoked(mac) and it says that my firmware is too new.....this is my fist attempt at rooting.....is there any way to downgrade to an earlier firmware or do i have to wait for a 2.3.3 root to come out??
