Root EVO 4g Stuck in White Screen / Bootloop

dmasse

Lurker
So, I have this EVO 4G that was stuck in a bootloop for the longest time. I gave it to a friend that said he could fix it. Now it just boots to the white screen that says EVO 4G. Needless to say, he didn't fix it.

I'm not entirely sure why I didn't just fix it myself. Probably because I didn't need the phone at the time. But now I would like to use it.

So, here goes. It's S-ON, HBOOT 2.10... I can get it into recovery mode, but there's clearly some sort of issue with the boot files.

My question is this: is there a way to reinstall the OS without having the phone completely power on? My hope is that it would solve the issue. I have tried the one-click rooting programs, but they usually require the phone to be on.

I've tried searching for the solution through these forums, and through Google, but with so many versions of the EVO, it's hard to find the answer for anything.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dan

well not much you can do with s-on now. do you still have a custom recovery? if so can you still get to it?

edit:what is your baseband(radio)?

Welcome to these here Forums!
I know you have s-on and can get into recovery.
Is this phone rooted with s-on?
Do you know if you have a custom recovery such as Amon Ra or Clockwork?
Perhaps can you post what is listed in your hboot screen, where you got the s-on, hboot 2.10 info.:)

with hboot 2.10 you have to have s-off and have su to be fully rooted. its not like unlocking the bootloader like it is now. there have been some weird things where an ota will unroot the phone and be s-on, but have a custom recovery and still be able to flash things. but those are rare. curious as to find out if recovery is still accessible.

Duly noted and "liked" for future reference!:)

Thanks for the quick responses! Here is all the information I've gotten from the Evo...

I'm not sure if that helps, or if it's good/bad news. I'm assuming it's bricked, but still holding out hope.

Thanks again for everything

ok but do you have recovery?

ok but do you have recovery?

I have a recovery option, yes. I assume that's what you're asking... I apologize, I'm not all that familiar with the lingo.

My options are as follows:

FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

If I select recovery, the screen goes to white screen that reads "htc EVO 4G" and sticks there indefinitely.

ahhhh ok so you do not have recovery. what you see is called the bootloader. ok i hate to be there bearer of bad news, but with s-on and hboot 2.10, there is not much you can do. there is only one thing you can try so here goes:

1.download this file:PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_W rename the file by deleting everything in the name but the PC36IMG part of the name. make sure not to add any extra .zip to the name as windows hides extensions.

2.transfer the file over to the card. just place it on the root of the card that means not in any folder, just on the card. you will need a card reader.

3.power the phone off then press and hold power+vol down. this should take you to the bootloader. it should scan and find the file. if it is named right and in the right spot on the card, then it should ask you if you want to update. select yes and then reboot.

hopefully this will work.

Hello Sir,

I have HTC EVO same like it.

If I choose recovery, it will on to white screen and the note is EVO 4G on screen.

I try to download your file here, and rename it to PC36IMG.zip (No hidden extension file).

And I try to get recovery mode, and I choose recovery. Its still same...

I try to choose fastboot, here the menu:
-Bootloader : If I choose it, it will back to recovery mode menu
-Reboot : If I choose it, it will reboot and then white screen bootloop
-Reboot Bootloader : If I choose it, it will reboot into bootloader menu
-Power Down : If I choose it, it will turn off device

I try to choose HBoot USB, nothing happen...

Until now nothing happen with my phone.

Try to install a recovery with this method:

this will depend on what software version you are on.

if you have software version 4.67.651.1 download this file:PC36IMG.zip

if you have software version 5.07.651.1 download this file:
PC36IMG_AmonRA-v2.3-hausmod_revA.zip

1.download the PC36IMG for your software version above.
2.rename the file so that it is only PC36IMG. make sure that you do not add any extra .zip's to the name as windows hides extensions by default.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Try to install a recovery with this method:

My Phone software version 4.67.651.1

In recovery mode, I try select HBOOT (doing press power on switch).

It is just become HBOOT USB...

I read your step number 3, how to setting this one if my device is bootloop?

Step number 5, is nothing happen if I select it.

If I'm select step number 7, Phone become white screen and EVO 4G logo then restarting only.

Maybe you have another step?

Do you have a card reader that you can use to insert your sd card into your computer? then you can put the file onto it. Then put it back into phone and continue with step 4 (of course, your phone will already be off, just boot into your bootloader screen.)

Here is what will happen after you put the file on the card and put it back into your phone.
You will hold the volume down button while pressing and holding the power button.
Your bootloader screen will come up.....just watch it and dont press anything yet.
It will automatically scan your sd card for that PC36IMG file.
If you renamed it correctly and put it on your card as instructed, it will see it, and ask you if you want to update....you will select "yes"
Then it will do it's thing for a minute.
Then it will ask you if you want to reboot.
You will say no.
Then you can select recovery.

Yes, I do this step...

I download file, and then I put it on to sd card...

Filename is PC36IMG.zip

And then I put sd card on to Phone

Next step, I set to in recovery mode (press Vol down + Power On)

Now I change sd card...

Your step is work...

How to fix it?

My evo 4g just started boot looping a few hours ago exactly as described in this thread. I have had clockwork mod recovery on it for about 18 months with no issues until today. I can hold down the down volume button and get into the boot loader, but if I choose the recovery option it just starts the boot loop all over again. Computer will not recognize over USB.

I was going to try the .zip files in this thread but wasn't sure if they would make things worse. Here's what it says in the boot loader screen:

You have to make sure the file is named correctly, if you add a .zip to the end of it in windows, you end up with PC36IMG.zip.zip....then it won' work. No extra .zip. Also, make sure the file is not in a folder on your sd card. What size sd card did you use? A 2GB card will give you issues....An 8 gb card is good.

Welcome to AF!!!
See my signature for a link to smelkus recovery and install the same way as above---the PC36IMG method.
My signature will be in my first post on this page. You may have to pull your card if your USB does not work to put the file onto it. If the PC36IMG method does not work, we can try to install the recovery via fastboot flash method...If it still wont work, be prepared to format your sd card.:)

Thanks, great to be here.
Right now trying to make sure the download wasn't corrupted somehow. Because it isn't working.

Downloaded the CM9 version, changed name to PC36IMG.zip and put on root of SD card. Bootloader recognized and updated. After update I chose "no" to when it asked if I wanted to reboot. Then chose the recovery option. The device rebooted but it still goes into bootloop. Clockwork recovery is still installed and if I choose the recovery option I get a bootloop with a twist.
Now I get the white HTC EVO 4g Boot logo then a line of text at the bottom that says something about RA-Supersonic and smelkus (flashes by so fast I can't read it all) and then turns off and repeats the loop. I can still boot into the bootloader.

Not sure how to do fastboot method either.

I'm not sure I explained this very well because I'm starting to freak out a little bit. Thanks for trying to guide me through this, I know it must get frustrating for you.

hmmm...that is odd.
Frustrating? Nah, not so much for me as it is for you, but I will continue to help you out..no worries:)
Do you have another sd card you could try?
Either that or, copy your current sd card to the computer and format the card using windows or this program:

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/

After formatting, copy contents back to card, including the PC36IMG.zip file and try it again.
That's about the only thing I can think of at the moment.
One more question, can you even boot up your phone at all into the OS? or does it just bootloop no matter what you do?

I get a bootloop no matter what I do. And I already formatted the sd card fat32 using window. Did not copy the contents back onto the card though.

I'd try it again and try the reboot instead of saying no....I'm thinking rebooting might complete the installation in this case.....just a thought
