Facebook app update available in the market

You realize that K-9 uses ActiveSync for push and FB uses C2DM, right? You also realize that C2DM is still in beta, according to Google, right? I don't know what GMail uses, but it obviously doesn't use C2DM since that's only supported by 2.2 and higher.

I'm not giving Facebook a pass here, I think this has been a terrible roll-out and the lack of communication from Facebook has lead to a lot of frustration, but comparing it to ActiveSync doesn't make much sense. And I can't say this for sure, but I think Facebook would be the largest implementation of the beta C2DM so far.

Well, if that is the case then this has got to be the most reckless thing FB has ever done. Using Android users as Guinea pigs and throw a non working beta concept at them ?
I find that very hard to believe.

It's not a "non-working" concept. C2DM has been successfully implemented with Word Feud, Trillian, BeeJive IM, and probably others. And if you believe FB wouldn't release a half baked update, go back to the release that had the partial wake bug and chewed through batteries.

Here's some reading for you. http://code.google.com/android/c2dm/

Note: Android C2DM will ultimately be available to all developers. However, it is currently launched in Labs, and not universally available. If you're interested in using C2DM with your Android applications, go to the signup page to request access. Google will contact you when you've been granted access.

Hell, for all we know, the Google server side of C2DM is the one piece that's falling down. Lack of communication means all we can do is speculate.

Hmm... I found a DROID option on my notification settings on FB and enabled it. Then I enabled email notifications for messages and wall comments. I had a friend comment on my wall and send me a message. Got a blue F in my notification bar for the message about two minutes later but nothing from the comment.

Interesting. I have that option in my FB settings too.

I've been lurking in the Android app discussions on FB and nobody has any idea what is going on... I just sent FB a tweet asking WTH is happening (politely though), but I'm doubtful I'll hear back.

I can't find that DROID option in my FB settings. Is it still there?

EDIT: Ok, that setting isn't there for a lot of people. It looks like FB doesn't even recognize that the Android application is even installed. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Possibly. It could be from the social settings I had enabled. My contacts sync with FB for info and pics

For what it is worth, I cleared my cache and local data...then uninstalled. Next I downloaded again from the Market - logged back in - to no avail. Still no notifications.

For what it is worth I am running the .340 release that came out last week. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. Not sure those that have theirs working is on some "other" build.

The chat feature is the big battery drain. If you click on it, but don't click on menu and then go offline when you are finished, it will keep running and drain the battery quickly.

Chat works for me- Droid X. However-- it is DESTROYING my battery. 10AM, took the phone off the charger at 6:30- I'm at 60%. Facebook partial wake usage through the roof.

I didn't notice it killing my battery, but when I read this, I checked the battery partial wake stats. Since I wiped my battery stats last week, I figured it would provide a pretty clear picture of what was being used.

Facebook was the #1 partial wake user. Almost twice as much as Android System. Every other app I had was using tiny amounts... just slivers in the bar graph.

Funny thing is, I don't even use the Facebook app. I use TweetDeck which gets me almost all of what I use Facebook for. So I uninstalled (rooted). I turned on email notification for some items, and in the rare case TweetDeck doesn't do something, I'll just hit the web site.

I'm pretty sure DROID is the Facebook sign in from when you go to Settings -> Accounts -> Facebook. The one that syncs your contact pictures and info from Facebook to your phone.

That's not my experience at all. Facebook is only showing a 3 minute 16 second partial wakelock on my phone in the last 26 hours. And I'm signed into chat.

Well, I refreshed my battery stats and "logged out" of Facebook chat in the app, and my battery seems back up and running at normal duration. I'll post back if I notice anything else. Other than that, I actually am receiving notifications. Don't know how or why, but I am. They're usually only 3-5 minutes delayed from when the actual action occurs.

Hope this helps.

Aha! I just got a push notification of a new message! Maybe things are beginning to work!

UPDATE: 2 hours later, they're still working!

Yeap - I am too now working...gotta think this was all due to server side issues now being worked out. I could like this.

Are you guys just getting notifications based in the options in the app or from comments as well?

I have been getting comments up until I posted last night...then they stopped...and now I started getting them again today.

Rooted with stock as well. I'm not the only one in the "never got anything" boat. My chat works, although I don't use it. Many have been saying that they were getting them and then the notifications stopped. It's really annoying lol.

update:

okay since the first day mine has been back and forth. It worked great at first then stopped and its really been up and down since. I'm getting notifications only for comments either on the wall or a photo or check in. I think the boxes that you can check for Notifications within the app are separate from the push noti's i'm getting. Meaning you shouldn't have to check those to receive comment noti's. I'm rooted running Apex 1.3 and i seriously didn't configure anything differently when i updated the app, i updated the new version and instantly started getting noti's.

Also since this is a new feature i would assume they'll (fb) probably be pushing out a patch to fix some bugs with it soon. As they do with any new feature.

also my chat doesn't work at all but i really don't care about that.

I don't like the fact it links people from my friends list to my contacts. Then when you try to delete them from contact it tell you that you have to delete from your friends list. My storm 2 only sync my contact with friends list that I liked.
