Root Farewell OG Land

MusicJunkie

Android Expert
I've upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S3 and have gotten rid of my beloved OG HTC EVO 4G. Thanks to all the folks here that have helped me countless times with rooting/flashing/ROMs/Kernels/OC & UC/Mods/Tweaks and all the other random questions I would ask. It's been a great (almost) year!

Another one down... Good luck on your new adventures! :D

Hey, be sure to tell us how you like it ;)

I'm still on the fence with the Gnex and G3 - so the more feedback the better :D

LTE :D

Main reason I went with LTE is the external sdcard. these three phones are so close. Gnex was really in the race for me. G3 was nice but wasn't sure about the support it would have next to the LTE and the gnex. I don't regret my decision I had this puppy not even an hour and it was s-off and on my way to LTE Greatness ;)

Gnex would be my next choice if I wasn't loving this one so much. Main reason is AOSP. Not a stable one for LTE yet but they are getting close I'm waiting for Paranoid Android to get a bit better. I flashed it and really like it. just a few issues that made me not run it as a daily yet. Mazdarider is aware of those issues.

You know the S3 has an external sdcard slot too right? lol :)

Man I'm struggling with getting the s3 or the gnex.

I use Phone Arena - Phone News, Reviews and Specs or Phone Scoop to get a numbers comparison of the phones, then I watch reviews of each phone separately and phone comparisons from "experts" and "non-experts," then I go to the stores to actually play with the phone on my own, lol. I actually did all of this (the first 2 things for several weeks and recently I did the latter at Best Buy and the Sprint store) to determine which phone I wanted.

I just liked the screen size and the features of the S3. That's what got me over the Gnex and LTEvo. An amazing camera from the LTEvo would be great if I took pictures that often. The S3's camera isn't bad at all, better than the OG Evo so I'm definitely not complaining. The Gnex is a nice phone too but some things it lacks (for me) and I've already had stock ICS on my OG so I didn't want it on my new phone.

To folks surprise, I'm actually not going to root my S3. I don't see it necessary. Yea, there is bloatware on the phone but the phone is so big (for me) I really don't care about it. I never installed huge amounts of apps to begin with and I still have my sdcard for extra media storage.

Just some of the things I wrestled with for about a month straight, lol. My brother said, "Get what makes you happy." I was gonna settle for the S2 (still an amazing phone) but I wouldn't have been happy because WiMAX will be obsolete soon and LTE might possibly be built in my market area soon (it better be -____-).

That seems least likely for me. I am really down on HTC for their bootloader locking and the general pain that seems to come with rooting an HTC phone these days. Like just the other day they release an update to patch the LazyPanda S-OFF exploit. It's so ridiculously easy to root the GNex (duh) and the S3...I just like Samsung's approach to the root/dev community more than HTC's. The S3 had source available as soon as the phone was released. HTC is notoriously slow at releasing source, although at least they have release the LTEvo kernel source, even if it was a solid month or so after the release of the device.

My main struggle is that the S3 clearly has better hardware than the GNex, but I'm such a fan of AOSP (and not a fan of Touchwiz at all) so it seems pointless to buy the S3 without having any desire to run the stock OS. At least with Sense I can handle it in small doses. So we'll see. I guess I will probably get the Gnex, but the camera, screen and speed/memory on the S3 are pretty enticing. It will just be a gametime decision for me when it's time to upgrade.

I find myself using the camera now more than ever just because its so good.

Every phone has its ups and downs.

The gsiii does have more ram, but also a pentile screen.

I love this phone. I noticed I don't get the "5%-10%" drop when I charge my phone over night and unplug it in the morning. It doesn't drop at all. I wonder if Samsung changed how they did their kernels.

Thanks for the link. I was looking for the side by side photos I've seen before but can't find it.

I don't see a drop off on my battery either. I was surprised as hell the first time I noticed it. I think that's just how the newer model phones are. Def a good thing to see.

Definitely. I hated the drop off on my evo when I ran a non SBC kernel. I was just like you, completely unaware it wouldn't drop off after initial full charge. Definitely a plus. Let's just hope technology advances so far we won't have to charge a cell phone battery ever again. :) (wishful thinking, lol)

Thats already in the works.. sort of.

Charging over wifi, batteries that last a whole week, ect.

It'll be 5+ years before this tech hits the market though :p

I'm not sure if that picture is a plus or a negative lol

Look at the full size :p

Its probably not going to be something that will bother you in day-to-day use, but there have been reports of a blue-ish hue on white screens and fuzzy edges. The photo does a decent job of showing both

Got you. I never noticed it on my phone. All my whites look white and I have the Defender series Otterbox with the protective screen that does a fantastic job of keeping the oils from my fingers on top of the covering so that alone fuzzes things up. When I took off the Otterbox it looked fine to me
