Fascinate vs Droid X

since we have so many Droid X people dipping into this thread, I have a question? Has anyone gotten a brand new Droid X with 2.2 out of the box? And how has it been working? I've been hearing alot of mixed reviews with the OTA update wrecking some X owners phones. I can speak for my original EVO being ruined after the 2.2 OTA update, but my cousins being fine out of the box with 2.2! So it's something that sparks interest in 2.2 with an OTA hurting some people's phones, and possibly doing the same to the Fascinate.

Not exactly answering you question but I was at VZW today and the DX demo model is 2.2 so yeah Im going to assume anything you purchase now is 2.2
 
it's possible that someone updated it in the store, you never know. anyhow, my droid x is a lot faster after the 2.2 update, not saying it's perfect but froyo certainly didn't ruin my phone. i'm pretty happy with the update.
 
That's weird, I was at my Verizon store yesterday and all the X's they had were still on 2.1 update1. Maybe they had a good reason why they dont want froyo on there yet ;)

For the record I have BOTH the Droid X and the Fascinate. As to your question, the reason why these devices have issues after the updates is do to market apps. Plain and simple. They work fine out of the box because there are no conflicting apps. A factory reset after the update will solve 99% of the issues people are having.

I also have both the Droid X and the Fascinate. I had ZERO problems with 2.2. I like to root the phones - for some basic reasons. But I have found no real gains beyond the root. I have had the D1, DInc, DX and Fascinate. I come from a long line of WinMo and even a couple of iPhones - the Androids win hands down and each of the aforementioned Androids are great.

So you really cannot get a bad one of these phones - I do like the 2.2 system. It seems to have smoothed out a couple of systems bumps.

I never made it to 2.2 on my Droid X, but the reasons I traded it for were not in any way related to 2.2 vs. 2.1, or even versus openness of one versus the other.

The two main reasons were simply ergonomics and the screen. I still think raw text looks sharper on the Droid X, but the Galaxy S is still easier to read in the sun, and it's much easier and more comfortable to operate one handed.

It's nice that you didn't have any issues though. If I owned a Droid X, I would unroot and do a factory reset right before updating to 2.2, and then another factory reset just for good measure. These phones are so fast now that it's really not a big deal, and Google lets you re-download your paid apps. I love that about the market.

I updated to 2.2 the day it became available. I have to say, either I'm lucky or the other people who are having problems don't know what they heck is going on. My X ran really good with 2.1 and it's running better with 2.2 Battery life is simply amazing.

The only issue I have and it's all motorola's fault, is the sms time stamp being incorrect. That's it.

If you use Handcent the very newest version claims to fix the time issue. Otherwise there is an app called SMS Time Fix in Market which supposedly cures the cancer

I have used Handcent before and never really liked it all that much. Sometimes when sending messages using it, they would never arrive at their destination. This was especially true when sending mms. I downloaded SMS Time Fix the very minute I realized the time was incorrect. Thanks for the tip though.
 
I just jumped ship from the EVO to the Fascinate yesterday....

I originally wanted the X because it's more similar to the EVO in terms of overall size and screen size...

I played with both the X and the Fascinate in the VZW store for about an hour...

I went with the Fascinate and here is why:

-- Gorgeous screen (in my opinion better than the X)
-- Size / Form factor
-- I did not like the bottom buttons on the X one bit
-- The SD card is accessible on the Fascinate w/o pulling the battery
-- I preferred TouchWiz over Motoblur by a rather large margin

The ONLY thing I am not happy about is the lack of a notification LED on the Fascinate... This is semi solved for me by using the free app NoLed from the market...

Overall I am 110% happy with my decision.... The X is a great device, it was just not for me.... As stated several times over in this thread, both are GREAT devices and it boils down to each and every individuals preferences...

Lemme just say I'm finding this thread amazingly resourceful. Thank you everyone for posting helpful opinions. I've had my Dx for the past 2 weeks and I absolutely love the thing. It does everything I need it to and more. My only qualm is the camera. It's not that the image quality is bad, it's just that for a device that does everything, it feels like a real blemish to not have an equally good camera.

So my question is aimed mainly at people who have had both. How does the SF camera compare to the Dx? Specifically in low light. Also the quality of the zoom. I've read that the resolution does not diminish as one increases the zoom. Is that true? I tried testing them out at the store, but obviously if I'm looking at pictures on the super AMOLED, then they're going to look nicer, so I'd like to hear opinions of people actually downloading their images to a computer.

Also how is the SF speaker compared to Dx? I've started listening to Pandora on my Dx and I find the sound to be quite impressive, but apparently the SF is even better!

Still have 2 weeks to return the Dx, but it really is an amazing phone. Thank you everyone again for your posts. They complicate the hell out of the decision, but they're most insightful.
 
I have the X and my girlfriend got the Fascinate last Friday as part of Best Buy's free Friday which means I've basically had a Fascinate since last Friday. She's coming from a RAZR so she let me have it so I could download the apps she might want and customize it.

People have pretty much hit everything on the head as the pro and cons of each. The X has a much more solid "feel" (build quality?) but that makes it heavier, more realistic colors (not bluish or saturated), physical keys which could be a plus or minus, has a notification light and from my couple days of testing, a much better camera.

The Fascinate feels much better in your hand because of it's smaller size and rounded edges, it's screen just jumps out at you because of the colors and it does not have physical keeps (once again could be a plus or minus).

I've put Launcher Pro on both so the UI is meaningless to me. Like I said, both are great. I would probably keep my X because the size doesn't really bother me (although 4" is the sweet spot for phones IMO), I like the more solid feel of it, and rightly or wrongly I trust Moto more than Samsung for future updates, but I won't lie, the size and the screen of the Fascinate are really really nice. You can't go wrong with either.
 
Ok so I have a Droid Eris right now and that thing lags like all hell and its starting to annoy me. So sometime this week I'm going to Verizon to get a new phone. I may wait to see what the LTE announcement is tomorrow from Verizon. Ok so basically I played around with a Droid X for a day and loved the hell out of it. I'm not a fan of HTC Sense as some people are and I heard bad stories about the Incredible's battery life and my experience with the Eris makes me want to not go to HTC. I saw this phone and I love its display and I know the processor and GPU are better than the X. I just have a few questions though. Is the processor really scaled down to 800mhz?

After that I'm just worried about buying any phone from Samsung. I like my phones supported for a while and I don't trust Samsung with that ever. I don't know if Rooting is for me because while I can do it, if something goes wrong I'd like to be able to unroot and I'm not sure the Fascinate can do that. Another issue I'm having is the lag stories I've read about on this forum. When I played with the X, I had 0 lag problems. I refuse to go to another phone with lag. Went from an iphone 3G to Droid Eris and hated it. iPhone was so smooth and responsive and my Eris seemed to suck at doing most things. If I wanted to make a call at times, it'd just stall and wait for a while before making calls. I don't like the 3-5 second lag my Eris had with phone calls at times when I dialed someone. Or when I received a call while in an app, it'd freeze and the touch screen would take 3-4 seconds to register my click to answer. Those things have left me annoyed with the Eris to an unbearable point. So I'm worried about that on the Fascinate. I'm just not sure which route to go. This phone or the X which I know doesn't lag at all from when I played with it.

First: No, the processor is not scaled down to 80mhz. (it rarely uses the full 1ghz tho).

Yes. you can "unroot" a fascinate (Odin method using a stock vzw md5 image).

The X has a lot less "lag" than the Fascinate. (i know this, as i carry both devices).
--The lag is no where near as terrible as the Eris however.

I LOVE both of the devices. They both are great. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask me :)

Even rooted the X has a lot less lag? That's the main selling point for me right now is the lag. I mean if you ever owned an Eris after an iPhone you know what I mean when I despise any kind of lag and want it gone.

Well, im rooted and removed some bloatware, but i still think the X has less lag.

Now, keep in mind. The lag is VERY minimal, but im just being honest. I do seem to notice a bit more "slow response" in the Fascinate.

Urgh thanks. I don't think I even want to deal with a little bit. My Eris makes me want to bang my head against the table on a daily basis and its making me hate phones. iPhone 3G really opened up a lot for me in terms of phone and when I played with the Droid X, I found that love of phones again which was missing when I switched to Verizon. I guess I'll wait and see what the dates are for the LTE's tomorrow and if its not too far away I can wait for the new 4G phones. If its like Christmas, I'll have to go for the X. Can't stand this stupid Eris. Why people love HTC Sense is beyond me.
 
I have no lag at all on my Fascinate and coming from the Droid X it is a superior device IMO. The camera is better and form factor is better. I have had all the android devices Verizon has and the Fascinate has been the best.

The speaker is good on both phones. Sounds a bit louder on the Fascinate, though. The biggest difference is when I set the DX down, especially if on something padded like a couch or bed, it almost completely mutes the speaker, even ringtones turned all the way up. Setting it on the car seat in the car I had trouble hearing it over road/wind noise. The Samsung doesn't suffer nearly as much when set down on something.

Also, I don't know what you're doing differently with your DX camera, but I could never get a picture to look as good from my DX as it did on the Samsung Fascinate. In broad daylight they are very similar in quality, but in lower light, or with the flash, the Fascinate is noticeably better than the DX, given equivalent conditions.
 
Well....let me urge you to play with them both as much as you can before your purchase.

Again, i love them both.

And as far as LTE....PM me about that....and lemme know the area you live.

I live in the St Paul/Minneapolis Area of Minnesota. So I'm pretty sure LTE's will be around here at launch. Just gotta wait and see what Verizon announces tomorrow. I really like the Form Factor of the Fascinate more than the X and I like TouchWiz's looks compared to Moto Blur. I'll play with them both at Verizon stores before I make a choice. I just utterly loathe any sort of lag whatsoever and that's enough to scare me away from phones. Sadly in terms of form factor, I'd have to say I like the Nokia N8 out of all phones but no way in hell am I going to Symbian^3 or whatever they're using.
 
I prefer TW over blur. IMO

And...again, let me emphasize that the lag is very very minimal on the Fascinate.

I understand what you're saying and I don't know I just don't want any lag. I have a 0 tolerance policy in lag terms. It makes me hate the phone experience.

Right.

Be aware though....iOS offers ZERO lag. Like, i mean truly ZERO. (most of the time).

Even the X will not be quite as smooth as iOS.

**Not a fanboy, just being honest**
