Help Finally tried "Handcent SMS" and I LOVE it!

Glad it worked out :p

Now does anyone know how to disable to pop-up while you are in Handcent without disabling it all together? (Or just disabling it for everything but the lock screen)
 
I'd like to try to help, but I'm not sure I understand your question.
Are you saying that you want to disable the pop-ups from Handcent, but not any other ones? I'm not aware of any other pop-ups, other than the ones that Handcent gives.
If you want to disable the pop-up, I can be the first to tell you that if you check the "dim pop-up" screen, it will not wake the screen, but it will show the pop-up when you unlock the phone.

Anyone else?
Cvam- care to rephrase your question? Sorry if I'm the only one not understanding what you're trying to do.:o

The options for the Handcent pop-up are Allow and Restrict. Meaning, it will pop up all the time or it will only pop up when the screen is locked.

I would like it to pop up all the time, but not pop up while I am currently inside the Handcent app typing or reading another message.

Make any more sense?
 
I had Handcent for awhile, but it really started lagging when I would scroll through my inbox of messages. All I really wanted was a pop-up to be displayed when I'd receive a message and Handcent did this, but with the lag, I switched to SMS Popup. My only complaint with SMS Popup is that my message notification icon displays a number for unread messages, when in fact, I've read them. I think someone has mentioned this somewhere. I wish there were a fix for this.

Yeah- lot more. Have you tried checking "restrict popup"? If that is checked, it says that "popup window will only show when keyguard is engaged"... Isn't that what you want? I would assume that if that is NOT checked, then it will popup all the time- even while you are engaged in messaging.
I'm sure you've tried that, but just giving a 2nd view of input- in case you didn't read/ see it that way.

Ok so I got this only for the t9 style keyboard and I can't get it to work at all... I've tried a multitude of different settings but it will only type numbers (even when I'm in text mode). I can't even type just a single letter. :( any suggestions?
 
i know i seen this on it before but since i took it off and reinstalled i cant find it anymore. I want to be able to text while driving and i know i saw an option to have speech to text.. anyone can help?
 
Handcent rocks but so far it seems none of the moment messaging apps will touch dial a phone number from within a text, that pisses me off a lot

That's odd, I am using handcent and just tryed out touch dialing a number I was texted today and it worked fine? The number is underlined, I touched it and it put it in an editor and I touched it again and it dialed it.

Unless you were meaning somethin else?
 
Thanks for you help in diagnosing in the other thread, I'll see if I can fire off an email and maybe an update can fix that
 
Like everyone else, I found a lot to like about Handcent. The "To:" field has a button that links directly to contacts whereas the built-in messaging program doesn't. That was big for me. Then, last nite, I tried to attach a ringtone mp3 file to a Handcent message and it rejected it saying that it was "over the limit" file size. On a whim, I tried a couple other, smaller, files. Same thing happened. Then I tried to attach the mp3 file to a message in the stock messaging program that came with the Moment. Worked perfectly. That is when I decided I do not need to messaging programs taking up space, so I uninstalled handcent.
You handcent experts out there; did I miss something in setup??:confused:

I have thought the Idea of this program was great since the beginning... but now I am wondering, why try to re-create the wheel? Can someone show me what all the hype about this app is about, personally I think the stock messenger looks and performs much better...
 
for me it's all about the popup overlay that appears when the phone is locked which allows me to respond to a text without unlocking the phone. I realize this may, at some point, cause a "pocket text" response on accident, but that's a risk I'm willing to take for improved functionality.

I installed Handcent when I got my phone, last Friday. I was reading on their site that you can have Text-To-Speech by downloading the TTS from the market. Has anyone been able to do this b/c I can't?

My 2 favorite things are:
1) the visual popup when the screen is alseep.. Sometimes I am in a place where I can't hear it, but I can see the screen pop-up, letting me know I got a message
1a) tied to this is the reminder feature that normal messaging does not give. Say I miss the tone and pop-up.. I have Handcent set to ring a "reminder" every 3 mins later.... Normal messaging does not give any reminders- giving the potential to ignore a potentially urgent text for hours- if you don't unlock your phone..

2) call me old-school, but I really missed the T9 predictive text of my old Rumor.. The virtual keyboard was very "manual" to me, and the physical keyboard is even MORE dangerous to use while driving (I know-I am a very bad man for texting while driving, but I DO try to keep it to a bare minimum)... But, with the T9 predictive virtual keyboard that Handcent Keyboard brought back to me, it is so easy to enter just a few letters of a word, then choose that word- all with my right thumb... Just like the old days.. I was used to that (just like my Yahoo email) and I like that way better.

That's my 2) cents..

I could not get the handcent keyboard to work worth a sh*t. It wasn't able to predict hardly any of the words I wanted to text. I am just using the stock android keyboard for now. Maybe I did something wrong.
 
Like most others here I love Handcent, and especially just how much you can customise it.
However, I've got one small issue, and I'm wondering of anyone else has the same. In my work, the reception is pretty dodgy, it goes up and down quite a lot, meaning that I can get an SMS, but by the time I've replied and hit send, I've lost reception.
The reception will come back up shortly afterwards, but Handcent won't send the message, it'll just have the rotating circle icon that usually indicates that its trying.
I can click on the message and forward it to the same person, and the message will send, but the original will still be 'trying' to send, and will stay like that permanently (well, over 24 hours at least)

Anyone had that?
 
it's ticking me off lately. I get the pop up and either reply to it or hit the trash button and the notification in the status bar doesn't go away and the message isn't indicated as read. annoying as can be.
