Root First step: Evo 4G "overclocked"

the fastboot you can leave off. you do not need it. most roms have that unchecked anyways.

as far as your phone and downloading goes, you need to connect your usb cable to your phone and pc. on your phone you need to switch it to disk drive. a window should pop up. just transfer the file from your computer to the root (no folders). after it is done then on your phone select charge and you can unhook the cable.

not sure if that is the answer you were looking for. if you have more questions please feel free to ask.

You guys have been great and i want to thank you once again. i do have some other questions related to this procedure.

1st. i already downloaded this "here" files that Xtremedays posted below.

It was late by the time it was done so i did not install them and to be honest i am not sure how or where on the SD card it is.

Granite1 suggested a few sticky's to read which I started. There's a lot to read and even more to know. For now it is important to know that my phone is less than one month old and that before this phone I didn't even text let alone know the infinite possibilities that exist in a "smart phone"
I want to learn as much as I can so I can help others when the need arises. In the mean time I am combing the forums for answers to questions that I have that already have been answered.

It will be late this afternoon before I can spend the time to follow your instructions, to see where those downloads are and do with them what one of you senior member/guides instruct me to do.

i read in another forum one members warning to another newbie to be careful of what he does because he could "brick" his phone. i am not sure what "brick" means but it doesn't sound good. So it there are specific things that i need to do to do this procedure correctly i need to make sure that i understand every step.

Thanks again.

bricking your phone is pretty hard to do. the main thing is to know what you are flashing. installing something that you are not supposed to could brick your phone. bricking your phone is just that you could turn your phone into a brick.

ok so one of those file from xtreme is a stock rooted gingerbread rom and the other is a file that is used to help wipe your system and prepares your phone for a clean install.

did you download the files on your phone? or are they on your computer? if you downloaded them from your phone then there should be a download folder on your sd card.

To be more specific, AndroidForums is the best site. try posting over at xda. if you are not careful they will flame you like no other. all i ask of anybody is to pay if forward like i do.

Absolutely, +1000!

Even if you ask the same question thats been answered 8,000,000 times, someone will take some time out and help you. There are still good people out there, and they congregate on this forum. :D

@ kryptonite, take your time. Don't rush into anything. Read and ask questions, we'll help you. Once you read and understand what extreme was saying we'll walk you through the steps, and unleash your inner flashaholic! :D

I'm not involved in this in anyway, but you guys are seriously awesome for helping kryptonyt out like this. I think my most favorite thing about Android is the people that come with it.

Here Here Stocklone! These are some very committed individuals. When people stand out like that i think back to being a kid and getting a chance to "pick the team". i would love to have these guys on my team for sure! Glad:) you not only noticed but you threw them a compliment.

Rocky :D i'm going to take this part slow. See my answer to ocnbrze above.

I found the files on my phone using Dolphin Browser i found our forum, found X's instruction. The first "here" seemed to automatically start downloading the moment Dolphin was completely connected to the link. i got a message about where the download would go. I can not say exactly what it said because like lots of things on my Evo the message comes and goes fast. I need to do an Evelyn Wood speed reading course.:D And i am confident that i will find the download. But before looking for it i went to the next "here" and wasn't positive that the file downloaded and i was a little paranoid that the site threw-in another download that i may not want.

But here's in part " the thing " about me at this point in time. If i could put the phone to my head and download all there is to know about how to use her ( i had a GF once like that: she knew how to get out of me whatever she wanted; don't let that news get out for obvious reasons ) In any event, even with all of the reading that i've been doing; the more i read the more i realize there's stuff to know. For now i hit menu, then settings, then SD and phone storage. Things stop there. i don't see a button to allow me to look in the SD storage card. So here i am team members a little embarrassed that i can't figure this out. i'm not a techno genius but i am a logical guy who looks for the hidden door in the game. ( metaphorically speaking just to be clear about that ) Sorry, i don't see how to simply look at what's on my SD card.
At some point i would like to be guided to the proper forum to initiate a conversation about what we are given and why. Maybe there is a great reason but if there is i don't get it.

i think if i get a chance to look at this through your eye's.

Thanks

Hey, don't worry about it, we were all in your shoes at one time! I had to ask the same question about the SD card contents.
Ok, you need a file management app to see the contents of your SD card. Older cell phones let you do this through the settings or menu selections, but Android is different.
Check your apps (lower left button on your home screen) and see if there's an app called "astro" or "estrongs" in there. If not, go to the android market and download either if those apps. I prefer estrongs, but to each their own :)
Once you have this app opened up it will show the storage areas of your phone. Click on /sd and here are your SD card contents. Check for a downloads folder or click on dolphin browser and see if there's a downloads folder in there.
Once you locate the files, choose multi-select at the top of the app screen and press the files you want to move. Then press menu, operations, cut. Navigate to the main SD card folder, and press menu again, operations, paste.
Once you get this down, let us know and we'll get you rolling from there. :D

In the SD download folder there are two things:
zzzvr_s.... and voicemail mp3
In the file manager there are 10 folders.

I'm guessing that there is a way to cut to the chase and search for a specific file and or folder. i'll do a search for the names of the files the X told me to download.

Before i do that i am wondering if i somehow downloaded the estrongs app twice. My phone won't give me a notice if i try to download a file i already have will it?

And while i'm asking about that, may i ask about the amount of space allowed for apps and i suppose for them to operate? Is that the 512megs that the EVO has? Is it a good idea to delete any and all apps that i don't use or maybe duplicated in someway? Example: There is an app i was told that turns the GPS on and off as needed to find a place/address. The program that i downloaded seems great but it depends on my GPS being on. But I forgot the name of the one that was recommended.

i found search, typed in the odex ( sp? ) but couldn't find and enter of search button so it just sat there.

It bugs me feeling like an idiot:confused:

Sorry that it's taken me this long to get back. i went to the VA hosptial for a regular appointment and two weeks later i'm back.

Five steps forward and three steps back.

Anyway, i downloaded a file manager and in the download folder there are two things, none of them say supersoinc. One says: voicemail.mp3 and the other says ZZZVR_S...

So i either did something wrong or it's somewhere else. i did a search, not sure it is only for the download folder but there is nothing that says supersonic.

i'll go back and reread the previous posts to see if i missed something.

PS i vaguely remember someone telling me not to allow my phone to drain the battery all the way down. That almost happened at the hospital.

I'm sorry if im butting in where I don't belong but I have to ask. What is the name of the store you bought this from? and what service are you getting (ie: Sprint, Boost)? Cause this sounds shadey. Also excuse me if i missed it in your previous posts.

Good to see you got the rocker issue fixed and you have Amon RA 2.3 recovery(the better choice in my opinion). Go here and download the Odex version. Next go here and download VR Superwipe. Put both files on the root of your sdcard(top level, not in a folder). Reboot to hboot, then select recovery. Select backup/restore, backup, check everything except recovery, then select perform backup. When it is done, return to the main menu and select wipe. Wipe user data/factory reset, cache, dalvik-cache. return to the main menu and select flash zip from sdcard, select zip from sdcard, select the vr superwipe and confirm. When it is done, select zip from sdcard and select the stock rooted rom zip and confirm. When its finished return and reboot then phone. It may take a bit to boot up(5-15 minutes) the first time but when its done you will be running the stock rooted rom that was released with the latest OTA.

What carrier is this running on?

If you read below i've been out of commision for two weeks or so. Finally found out one of the things i was doing wrong so both files are now downloaded. If i understand your instructions you do not want the downoladed zip folders in the download folder. The are in the root directory but not at the top of it. Can't figure out how to get them there if i can't just grag and drop them there. They keep going to the bottom of the directory.
With as many surprises that have been happening i'm not sure that i want to just try the process and risk having no phone/service until someone responds to me cry for help. So please give me a go or no on where they are.

Thanks

Do not know everything i might need to know about why these phones are flashed and or rooted or any of that stuff. It occured to me that the main things i want to avoid is owning a stolen phone. i was assured that it is not stolen.
For now i think less is better.

The phone is working. i have a lot to learn. And i may need to get a new speaker since it sounds like it rattles some.

Glad to see your stay at the VA wasn't too long. Hope everything is good.

As long as you know where the files are on your sdcard, they do not have to be on the root of it. The only things that have to be on the root are PC36IMG files as hboot will not look in folders for that file name. In recovery, you can open and search folders yourself to find the downloads. The directory is alphabetical so they will not go to the top of the list.

When you are ready to flash the rom, make a nandroid backup first. If you are on Clockwork, it backs up everything automatically. If you are on Amon RA, you will need to check Wimax(important at least once or twice), and I would suggest cache and android_secure also. Once that is done, wipe userdata, cache, dalvik-cache. Then flash the superwipe, then flash the rom. When it is done, reboot and setup your stuff the way you want it.

If you have apps or game progress you want saved, download Titanium Backup before you do this and backup your user apps. We can guide you through that if you need it. Let us know if you need any help with this stuff or have other questions.

Sounds like a Boost Mobile customer.

You save money on your cell bill but have to deal with second rate clowns who will be nice to you until you buy, then will charge you up the ying yang for everything.

About that pc36img file. I renamed it pc36img1, because everytime I went into boot it would look for it ,find the folder, run it and then ask if i want to update it. So I renamed it to avoid that, is that ok or should I let it update everytime???

If it is the file for Amon, then you can delete it if you want. It isn't necessary to keep it on there once its flashed.

I did the same thing..I figured if I ever needed to run it again I could delete the 1 and be good to go.

i just lost a post that took me 20 minutes to compose as i was looking for references to copy and post.

So even as far as the forum goes i don't have it together enough to stay logged in until i finish the post. And i was attempting to show you how and why i am gun shy....

i guess i have to write these posts off line or risk losing them again.

Let's see if i can reader digest this. The 8G card did not come with the phone.

It may be yet another exapmle of what i.h.d. said: August 26th, 2011 10:05 AM i.have.droid

The Vender exchanged the 8G card that came with the phone for a 4G. When he fixed the rocker he slapped an 8G in. It wasn't a new card. It was one of many that he had in his desk draw in paper clip box.

Maybe the SD card needs to be formatted before i move forward with this process?

Sorry if this all seems a little paranoid. i love the phone and the concepts of what i might some day do with it. For now it has been a month of fighting. i do enough of that with the VA and before that; earning my VA benefits.

How do the folders in the root directory get there? Does droid put them there when a fresh card is installed? What if the card was in another persons phone? Don't i introduce anything and everything from that other person phone into my girl?:confused::confused:

Sorry for all the BS that may be the result of my choice of where to get my phone and not doing enough research before purchasing. But for now this is who i married ( if i can say it that way; sure feels like it )

I would copy the contents of your SD card to your pc. Just highlight everything and copy, then paste to a folder in your pc.
Then delete everything on the card.
You can then format the card if you want, it might not be a bad idea, but if it's not screwing up it's not necessary.
Your phone will create all the folders it needs on the SD card.
After that's complete you can transfer all the pictures, music, etc from the folders on your pc back to the card.

Could be divine intervention that keeps my long posts from posting. In any event. i need to communicate that some instructions must be given to me as if i have never seen or used a computer in my life. i say this because an instruction that says "select" and doesn't tell me what button, combination of buttons and toggles to use AND what i might see the phone do or say then i have no idea if i have indeed "selected" and executed the action.

i printed out all of eX's instructions but have no idea if i "selected" and enacted that choice by pressing the on/off button once. If that is the right move i have no signs that anything happened or changed.

Sorry that i keep coming back to the most basic stuff butt maybe i should have started with a formula V rather than a formula 1. So as a phone communication device this is not the best choice. i'm thinking of buying a cheap phone so i do not have so much down time and if someone can help me sync with my wifi i can still learn how to use this device without losing the use of " a phone ".

Then i can buy Evo for dummies or spend a month or two reading forums to learn how to use this race car and even to make it faster and better.

In the mean time i have no idea how to enact the instructions.
