Flagship Device?

Old Member

Android Expert
I'm very frustrated at the lack of working qyality apps for our Gnex.

HBO Go
Hulu Plus
Google Wallet (I and others have issues)

My old Dinc and Droid 2 have access to HBO Go and Hulu Plus and my new "Flagship Device" does not.

Anyone else frustrated too?

Yes. I really like this phone, but I am not completely satisfied and I find myself keeping tabs on upcoming phones like the SGSIII and the new HTC phones. OTOH, I think I was blissfully happy with my Incredible for 12-18 months.

There are other apps with issues besides the ones you list, but I'm also frustrated by a lack of accessories. And the only Gnex accessory that is out doesn't work unless you're rooted and have 4.04. I knew there would be some hiccups, but I also thought there would be some faster updates and some working accessories within the first 3 months.

Sorry that these things are frustrating to you. I personally am in love with this device, it is the first device that i can see myself holding onto until the next Nexus come out for Verizon, and even then, it has to be better in every way. :)

Hopefully they will get some of the bugs out of the phone soon, including adding more accessories to the phone. I really am waiting for the dock...

If you expected that all apps would work across the board on a phone that is the only phone on the market running a new OS version, then I have a bridge to sell you...

Adoption of the bleeding edge always comes with some problems.

Anybody who knows anything about nexus phones expects some minor issues right off the bat. I alluded to that in my post and knowing cinci from the pre-release thread I'm sure he didn't expect everything perfect right away either. But what is also expected of a nexus phone is some timely updates for whatever minor issues there are. We may disagree on "timely", but I think almost 3 months with no updates is pretty slow for a nexus phone. And we know that a software problem is the cause of the pogo desktop dock not working properly. This is a great phone, and could be perfect with some fixes and decent accessories, but so far it's not a great showing for a "flagship" device, especially a nexus.

Those of us who bought this phone thinking it was Verizon's Flagship device have been fooled. I have walked into my local VZW stores many times, and have stated interest in the Nexus, everytime the reps try to sway me from the Nexus, and push me more towards a RAZR or RAZR Maxx.

I agree that this phone hasn't shown well for a flagship device, because, quiet frankly, I don't believe it IS a Flagship device. Verizon doesn't want to push it as one. I do think that all of the Google Phones are Flagship phones for Android, but Verizon isn't a huge fan of it, so it seems.

Go look at the prices of the current smart phones on VZW. The Gnex is still holding its value and its the only one released last year that has.

Probably because Verizon makes less off the Nexus than they do from phones where they can load up their crapware. They don't WANT you to buy it. The Gnex is priced much lower on Amazon and other non-Verizon sellers.

This.^
They did that to me at my store. And they know me there, We are always swapping rooting tips, apps to run etc...
I can only assume as someone else pointed out its because they don't get as much money from the sale of the GNEX....regardless. It is a flagship device...IMO

+1.

The most heavily-marketed device in the store isn't necessarily the BEST device in the store. I, too, am thrilled with this phone. I have tricky apps like Wallet (so I can astound people when I buy gas :D )and Dish Remote Access (so I can watch TV on the go)... everything works, and it exceeds my expectations.

Is it perfect? No, and no phone is. But IMHO it's the best phone out there at the moment, and I am proud to be an owner. My 0,02 :)

My biggest pet peeve and continual frustration about this freaking device has got to be the radios.

Outside? NO PROBLEM. LTE SIGNAL LIKE A BOSS.

Inside?

Give your phone any sign of signal interference and it will cower in the corner and cry itself to sleep. (oh noes! concrete! mercy, please!!)

Fricken Co-Workers Droid RAZR is all starin at me right next to my Gnex pulling in a data signal without struggle... i'm just staring at it waiting for it to change screens to a coolface.jpg image, like Problem, Tony?

Damn right there's a problem

By no means did I expect everything to be perfect on the Nexus at this point but I did expect apps that worked on launch (wallet and Hulu) to work after being launched almost 3 months.

I've been down this road before with the Xoom. I love my Gnex. Just because I vent frustration doesn't mean that I don't think it's a good device. I am ready for apps supported by older phones to be supported by my Galaxy Nexus.

Hi guys it's been awhile. I see some new guides too! Congrats!

I totally agree with this. (I have the xoom too (and I still love it(I wonder if triple parenthesis will crash the board?(Hmm, I guess not :D ))))
Having said that, My Nexus will be delivered today. I finally stashed enough money away to get it. YAY! So I came here to see where everyone is at regarding this device.
I understand the frustration and I agree that one should expect some issues with a new OS, but I think the app issue is more on the app dev's shoulders than the OS dev's, no? I thought that Wallet wasn't part of this device from the manufacturer? Seeing as VZ is putting their eggs in the ISIS basket. As I said, I haven't even had it in my hands yet, so I could be wrong.
Anyway, I'm sure things will get better in time, at least I hope so now that I'm part of the crowd waiting.
I have to admit, I am excited! :p

VZW will never market a phone outside their Droid line as hard as one in the line. They paid too much to The Bearded One to use the fancy 'Droid' name, so they have to make sure it sells.

/I find it funny that the first VZW commercial to leverage an actual Droid was for a non-Droid LG phone.

//I don't they they ever really marketed the R2D2-D2 on TV, did they?

The issue with apps not working is up to the dev of the app not Google. The dev has to update the app to work on the new version of the OS. Wallet is an issue with VZW. I am happy with my purchase of the nexus. As for updates to the OS not even all of the nexus s phones have received an ICS update yet so I don't think there are any delays in updates for the Gnex at this point either

I'm still trying to figure out where it was ever marketed as the Flagship Device that everyone seems to be calling it in threads I'm reading today. Just because it's the first 4.0, and first "pure" Google phone, I haven't seen anywhere that Verizon has ever claimed it to be a Flagship phone. I've seen independent review sites label it, I've seen people here label it as such too. People are implying that Verizon/Google/Samsung dropped the ball on Verizon's "Flagship" phone, when no one in the three mentioned has ever come out and said "This is IT!".

Back OT, agreed that it does seem frustrating when some things haven't been updated yet. Probably moreso for people in the LTE fringes. But as was mentioned by Yeahha, it's the devs that have to get things right for the phone/ICS, and not the carrier or Sammy to do so. Sure, we're waiting on the 4.0.4 and whatnot for the LTE version. To be honest, that was the one reason I initially wasn't sure on the Nexus, because I saw how long it took the Fascinate to get the 2.2 update. But being assured that as a Google phone, it'd get them quicker, I bit. And sure enough, nothing yet. Probably wouldn't be so bitter-tasting to a lot of people, if it wasn't mentioned that they were working on issues.

I believe personally, that companies in general do a very poor job of customer-relations when it comes to things like this. Information is God. Even if the update isn't ready, at least post updates once in a while to a forum to let us know that "hey, we're still working on it, we're having a couple minor bugs preventing us from releasing it just yet, but we haven't forgotten you!". Seriously, that would appease a LOT of anxious people. And not just in this market, but tons of other companies would benefit too. Seriously, how hard is it to post a 5 minute blip somewhere to let us know that you haven't forgotten the customer... /endrant

It is a flagship device, just not Verizon's. The Nexus is supposed to be Google's flagship phone, showing off the newest OS and what stock Android can do.

Verizon's flagship device is whatever they want it to be, and as mentioned, its likely to be something with the "Droid" brand. I'm still just happy VZW finally got a Nexus phone, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Hopefully a lot of the app makers will work out any compatibility issues with ICS soon.

I'm sure some of the issues are app issues but my guess is that a lot of it is software related. It just seems like too much of a coincidence that every single streaming music app was causing rebooting for me. I think once we get the next software update (in another month???) then a lot of the app problems will go away.

Google provides the OS and the SDK, it is up to the devs of the apps to make their apps work with that. IMO google should focus on getting all nexus devices on ICS before working on upgrading ones that already are ;) This is because the higher percent of devices running ICS the more devs will try to make apps that work with it.

I agree that a "Droid" phone will be verizon's flagship device. IMO this is a flagship phone for verizon and google. Verizon doesn't like it because it's not a droid but I think they felt the need to be involved in the FIRST android 4.0 phone. As long as Verizon continues to bring the rest of the nexus phones to verizon, then I'll be happy. After coming from OG droid and Bionic, vanilla android is sooooo much better than motos blur. Just kinda surprised at how much they push the razr when they can push the gnex or at least the maxx. Feels to me like verizon WANTS the razr to be a flagship device lol

This right here is exactly what we need to happen. I don't want to be the select few anymore who has an ICS phone. I want a phone that will get good applications compatibility. The day will come when all new phones will ship with ICS, that will help the problem significantly, but probably won't happen until Jelly Bean is released.

I'm very happy with mine so far, except I find myself annoyed every so often with the flyscreening, only an issue on grays and light blues (I tend to have scenic views with some blue sky as my wallpaper). I need to go in to the store and compare with the display model.

I've had other issues, many of which seem better in the leaked OTA (I've heard). Also I've gotten used to all the quirks of the phone and pros/cons of Android vs Blackberry OS.

Also the display gamma/contrast issue bothers me every now and then, but usually no big deal.

I just chock it up to a lesson learned in the mobile device economy 101. I've learned so much about different issues and technologies with the present devices. So I'll be quite informed when I'm due for an upgrade.

With all that said, it is on the same tier as all other top phones, each better than others in different ways. You gotta judge it on the overall experience OS + hardware + software + network.

\int_{EastCoast}^{WestCoast} ICS(GNex) dLTE = fun

Thoughts from a newbie:

Define "flagship". My wife has had an iphone for awhile, but the Nexus is my first smartphone. I decided when I was shopping that as long as I was going to take the plunge, price wasn't going to be an object. I looked and played with all of the big phones in the Verizon showroom. The Nexus instantly stood out from the pack in terms of specs, screen quality (!!!), build, and feel in my hand (the Razr is TOO thin, IMO. The edges cut into my hand). On the other hand, the shelves were crammed with Droids, so I agree that Verizon is betting big on them. I've had my GN for a couple of weeks now, and except for constant anxiety about the battery level, I couldn't be happier with it.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is definitely not Verizon Flagship phone imo. That is where the problem resides.

Release the labels that aim at denunciation of other phones and your Nexus shall be set free.

Join the enlightened ones.
