Root Flash reboot flash...?

Ok, I see a lot of roms where they say to flash one part, reboot, then flash another.

So, do you flash, restart and let it boot normally all the way into the (partially loaded) rom, shut it off, then go back into recovery again to finish flashing?

Or

Do you flash, select restart and go right back into recovery (not just go back to recovery) and flash the rest?

Just seems odd to let the phone boot normally when you aren't done flashing, or is that just me?

Sorry, been reading a lot, but still confused...

you are probably looking at aosp roms and having to flash the gapp files. you actually do not have to flash the gapp files, but if you want the market and other google apps then you will have to do it that way.

When i flash an AOSP i usually flash the rom, reboot, check out the rom i.e. make sure its all good without my gapps loaded, then go back to recovery and flash gapps, reboot and enjoy.

The rom is fine without the gapps, its not partially flashed. Just wont have gmail or gvoive, or market, or anything google related. AOSP cant include google apps in their roms due to copyright stuff so there is a .zip you flash separate for all the google apps.

Thanks for the reply, makes sense.

Another quick question. For these aosp roms I'm looking at, a lot of people ask which kernal to use. Lots of replys just say 'I used the one that came with it'

Do aosp roms have their own kernals that are needed, or will they run on a stock kernal that came with the phone? I dl'd all the files linked in the post for this aosp rom, and there were no 'kernal' zip files...
So is it a different kernal, or does it run on the stock kernal?
I read that there are differences between sense and aosp kernals, if thats correct, I'd need a different kernal to use the aosp rom right?

Once i figure that out, does it matter if I flash the kernal then rom, or rom then kernal? I'd rather use the stock kernal if it will work with both aosp and sense roms, until I find the rom I like...

Damn, this is soo confusing...

1)all roms include their own kernels; which kernel it is depends on the devs. it is up to you to decide if that kernel is working for you.
2)there is a difference between aosp and sense kernels.
3)you need to flash the rom first, and then the kernel.
4)try the kernel that is included in the rom and see how it goes. i would then flash a different one if need be. you can get some of the kernels in my sig ref#2

Thats what I read too. So, if its just the one zip file, its a rom/kernel combo so to speak? Cause I dont see a seperate kernal to flash. So I just flash the one zip and it does both?

If i go aosp, and I have a nandroid backup, when I want to restore, do I need to do anything besides restore the backup (IE reflash the stock kernel)?

Sorry, this aosp thing has me confused!

Last questions for today, promise!

Edit: Thanks mullersirch, that answers one of these questions :D

The stock AOSP kernel is included in the ROM zip. You do not need to flash anything else unless you want a custom kernel. If that is the case, look for any kernel labeled AOSP, as there is a difference between those and the stock kernels. If you want a kernel other than the stock AOSP one that comes with the ROM, you need to flash it after the ROM.

Just flash the backup, it includes the kernel and the ROM

yeah all roms have the kernel built into the .zip file. so you just flash the rom and you are good to go. really flashing aosp and sense roms are very similar. the only difference is is that you have to flash the gapp files in addition to the rom. nandroid backups are a snapshot of your current phone. so when you go to restore your backup everything should be as it was when you last backed it up, kernel including.

This is just a recommendation from my own experience and I know of a couple others that have had the same issue. When you restore between Sense and AOSP, I would wipe data/factory reset and wipe davlik-cache. I have had issues when not doing this. It only takes a few extra seconds in the process but it makes sure that you have a clean slate to work from.

Either way is fine;)

I have never had an issue without wiping so.......this is using amon ra v2.3

Lol sorry andy I'm with xtreme on this one. I'm clearly a noob in comparison but I had issues going between sense and aosp without a wipe. or I just suck either way it won't hurt and only takes a second

Like I said;) either way is fine but I recommend not wiping as the recovery will format everything for you before restoring:)

You know what i was using clockwork mod when i had those issues and developed my habit of wiping everything always lol, i switched to amon ra a couple weeks ago and havent changed my habits yet. What im saying is maybe it was a clockwork thing, i havent put it to the test with ra.

I have been on Amon RA since rooting my Evo back in October. I guess it would be personal preference, but I have experience problems as have a couple others I have talked to by not wiping between AOSP and Sense rom restores. I don't believe that the restore erases everything but rather writes over whatever was written in the partitions that were backed up. If not everything was backed up, it might leave data in the partitions that were not backed up and thus had no data to write over.

Again, I don't believe there is a right answer. I have never wiped before doing a nandroid restore, that's with clockworkmod and amon ra, never had an issue;) This is with nandroid restoring between multiple AOSP roms to Sense roms and vice versa, on either the EVO or the Hero.

So....... let's agree to disagree and move on:D

I read over on xda that clockwork was having an issue not actually wiping some things when it was told to, it would say wiped but never actually performed a wipe. Its in the thread for kings ultra R3 i believe, then again couldve been in netarchy, i was reading both today. It was in the OP from the dev though, not like it was just a random person saying it.
