Root Flashing Radio - Hesitant

Hi all,

I'm constantly flashing new ROM's my end to try and find one that suits.

As I'm sure you're all aware, most of them say "Use this Radio for best results" blah blah blah...I've stuck with a previously flashed radio for the last few ROM's.

I'm about to flash Defrost 6.0. The literature surrounding the ROM says to use a specific Radio to get the camera to work.

My hesitation is this - I've read that trying to flash the same radio version as the one you already have flashed can brick the phone? Is this true?

If so, how do I find out which radio version I have?

Go into settings> about phone> software information

It should be under baseband version.

I've only flashed a few radio's. I have read it is one of the more risky things to do but never had an issue myself.
 
dont buy into the radio flashing crap that xxx is better. in most cases its placebo

nearly all custom roms are based on 2.10.405.2 which is bundled with 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2

radio flashing can be risky but not many people ive seen have actually caused a brick from doing it.

aosp roms are a different story though as they have special builds
Defrost 6.0 is an aosp/cyanogen based rom and likely needs the libs from that specific radio for the camera to work.
so in your case its a must
 
Have to say, the latest radio (see my signature) appears to provide better reception around where I work. I'm now getting full H reception whereas before I was barely getting G...battery life is no better, though

You do need a newer radio for the camera to work, but you don't need the newest. You can flash the rom, and if your camera does not work, then you could flash a newer radio.

I have flashed a few radios, no problems. They say that the best way to flash a radio is with fastboot, but you need to S-Off your phone before that will work.I have always flashed from recovery.
 
Actually have to agree, the defrost recommend radio (.48) gives me h where previously had g too.

It is risky if you flash and lose power while flashing as if you corrupt, you can brick. Take the same care as you do when flashing anything else
 
YYes fastboot removes an added layer of software I.e. recovery so less to go wrong
 
I'm still nervous about flashing a radio. Where do i get s-off from? What is it, and how do I use it?

I'm about to flash to Leedroid 2.2f, this is my radio, which I believe is the one that came with the phone, is it worth the risk?

S-off is a customIzed hboot which ignores the security flag installed in the radios nvram. It allows you further access. If you don't know you need it you don't need it

Just don't pull the. Battery whilst flashing radio and it will be fine
 
Just to clarify, I presume you flash a new radio in thesame way that you flash a ROM: stick the zip in the root of the SD card and install a la "flash from SD Card" via boot recovery?
 
Ok, cool.

Apologies for the dense question, but why is flashing a new radio any riskier than flashing a new ROM. I understand that it is the radio that holds everything together, and that you can nandroid back-up a ROM but you can't back up a radio, but surely, that actual process is no more or less risky? As long as the radio verion you're flashing is stable (or as stable as can be) then surely it's no riskier than flashing a tried and rested ROM? Or am I being naive?
 
Flashing a radio process wise is no less risky but if it corrupts, due to the limited access we have to that area, there is no way to wipe or recover it. Unlike with roms.

Okee dokee. I'm currently running 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 radio, but am seriously considering flashing up to 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 (a la Eddie OS) just to see if I can get better reception and battery life.
 
The radio file says .md5 after it. Can I still flash this, what does it mean?

I tink I'm gonna flash anyway. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I feels good.
 
Lol at Danfrance, with all the exclamation marks getting frazzled at all my stupid Noob questions me thinks hehehe. I've just read another thread of yours telling of how important a Goldcard is, so I'll do one of them first and then proceed with my flashing. I thought that Unrevoked had rendered the Goldcard as useful as last years turnips but as usual I have much to learn.

Ah..I thought so too..till I landed mine in an SLCD brick. Then I realized that it was pure gold!
 
I would be beware of 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, its a rather battery draining radio. I used it for a week before reverting back to 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2. I know its all dependent on what you use and that but for me it used more power.:(

Thanks for the tip Scoop. I've flashed the new radio successfully (did it before I read this!) but I'll keep and eye and see how things go...
 
I just spent an hour trying to install AndroidSDK isn't Windows rubbish? It tickles me that almost all peripheral software for Android phones (LINUX) is Windows driven. I'll try again tomorrow!

Does anyone know if there is there a Linux alternative, Linux is so far ahead.

No problems mate. Its easy enough to revert back if needed. On the xda dev forum there is some good info on the newer radios, very long thread but well worth a read, some people find its better. I will post a link if it ok with the mods on this site but if not many apologies before hand.:)

Hmmm, interesting. Read the XDA thread and it sounds like a lot of us Poms are finding 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30 the best in terms of signal and battery life. Think I may flash that instead. I presume it's ok to flash an older radio on top of a newer one? (I flashed .49 last night).

I also see that some think that it takes "several bootups or even several days" for a phone to get used to a radio, settle down, and optimise signal and battery life. Surely, that's nonsense - either a radio is better or worse? How can an inanimate object "settle down"?
