Froyo 2.2 OTA is just around the corner

I'm on a second version of Flash 10.1. Adobe did some bug fixes and it seems to run even better. Other than that, the phone works the same as 2.1

My corporate rep I deal with at work on the public safety side said late september for the update. When it comes it comes. I really dont have any complaints with my X.

I totally stole this. :D

man no droid x 2.2 announcement at that adobe droid conf last night. this sucks i wish the 2.2 leak didnt have a broken build.prop

I emailed support on another issue and took opt to ask them about the upgrade. This is the reply I received today:

In regards to the 2.2 OS update to Froyo, Verizon Wireless has yet to obtain any credible feedback from Google, regarding the release of a 2.2 device firmware for the Motorola Droid X. Once available, the OS release will be automatically delivered to your handset for download and installation.

Based on the lack of available feedback, we are unable to advise of any projected time frame for any such release, as it may cause an unmet expectation.

The Droid operating system is proprietary software by Google. Thus, Google determines when any related updates will be available to which Droid operated Smartphones, and therefore cannot predict and or indicate when any such updates will be available on the Motorola Droid X. I apologize for any related inconvenience.

I have however, forwarded your concern to our Marketing Department for review, in hopes of expediting the 2.2 release for Verizon Wireless customers.

It surprised me to see people here mad at Verizon or Motorola, when the software is developed by Google, who in this is case are the "bad guys".

I don't believe that is correct at all. Google released 2.2 about 4 months ago. Then it is up to the manufacturers of the phone to adapt it to their indidvidual phone. If the Droid X didn't have Blur on it that process would have taken virtually no time at all. Since it does have Blur, it is up to Motorola to adapt the software for Blur. Then it goes to Verizon for approval. If Verizon rejects it they have to make adjustments as needed.

Of course I could be completely wrong, but I am pretty sure that is close.

I'm not sure if my sarcasm detector is broken, but 2.2 was released in June to manufacturers (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) and what's taking so long for release is the modifications that they've decided to make to the stock OS. What's interesting to me here is that Motorola and/or Verizon would be openly willing pass the blame to Google.

Edit: gee I really need to start reading posts above me >.<

Seeing as they are so blatant on blaming Google. I wonder if Google is getting pissed about the crap the manufactures are putting on the the phones? Maybe the lock down on a open program like android is pissing them off and Google is trying to hold the Dx hostage till Moto gets the crap off and opens it back up as it was designed to be.

Just a thought.....

I just wanted to head this off and make some clarifications.

Google releases the source code.

Motorola has to add driver code and other enhancements.

Motorola compiles the source code with drivers/enhancements, so they make the end software, as they see fit.

Google does not release the [compiled] "software".

In this case, I've heard that Verizon must approve the compiled software generated by Motorola, which may be one of the largest delays.

Statements like above are like saying that Linus Torvald is responsible for the compiled Fedora versions provided by red hat. Which we all know is not true.

The rep is both right and wrong. Google does release new versions of Android, but once they do it is up to companies like HTC, Motorola, and Samsung to implement those updates into their devices. Google released a final version of Android 2.2 to the public months ago, we're waiting on Motorola/Verizon right now, not Google.

Really very little info has leaked here. I'm starting to think they are going to miss "late summer" and maybe by a lot.

I would agree. This really sucks for me for a few reasons.

1. I had DINC and everyone was saying froyo was going to come out later. But the poor managed battery life turned me away from DINC.
2. Adopted an X, and it's working GREAT! I just miss FLASH on my device, there's some sites I use all the time (not even close to games) on the device.

Is there a thread to call mot/vz about this and record the tally yet?

Man. I went to manually update under the about phone panel and it still tells me that there isn't an update available.
