Froyo 2.2 Overhyped?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, and no disrespect is intended to EarlyMon (we're all only human, after all), but I'm positive Gtalk running has nothing to do with GMail being pushed.

I've checked Running Applications, Battery Usage, and opened System Panel, and none of those show Talk running. To test, I opened Talk, unchecked Login Automatically (had no idea it was checked to begin with), rebooted and sent myself a test email from a different account on my laptop. It popped up on my phone about 10 seconds later.

Hey, no problem - without clear documentation or a crystal ball we have to rely on socializing the information and that's tough enough, but even tougher with tech.

This short thread may be interesting:

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/135730-gmail-still-not-syncing-reliably-evo.html

Talk isn't canonically required for GMail - but the idea is that whatever service it coordinates is correlated to the sync delay problem for others.

Try it for a while with Talk off. Your 10 second result may indicate that there's more to the story or it may have been a coincidental result. Retest from time to time, or just go in every so often and see how the notification time matches up with the mail time. You can't say what was happening before, because you didn't know that Talk had run and set up this mysterious port/service, if true.

And - we've no idea that it might be the same or different with 2.2 - as that thread mentions, a single socket was all that was required.

Others with different custom roms report no talk/mail correlation and that makes sense to me - if all you need is a single socket, you'd think GMail would just deal with that all on its own.

Anyway, the other thread is short and gives food for thought.

Like you said, I don't have all the answers - that goes without saying. :)

But hey, if you want to stick with 2.1 and have no chance at an update, go get yourself a Samsung Moment or HTC Hero and stick with your terrible performance and lack of real Flash.

Hey hey, watch your mouth, the Hero didn't have terrible performance

I am sure it will be fine. I have not downloaded it or installed it because I am patient and don't need to have the latest and greatest until it is ready to be shipped out. I am glad others BETA tested it though.

It was really funny watchiing people hit refresh and melt down on Friday. I think that is what the OP meant by overhyped, and it completely is. When you are melting down over a phone update to your cellular device, you are at a level of boredom or unhappiness that I hope to never personally feel.

^Actually kind of reminds me of some PC folks who are hardcore about their driver updates. lol

Way overhead, swype is also officially broken too and flash is slow to load sometimes
You have to click the arrows to get it to play ....sigh

4g speeds have seemed to shoot up, 3g even seems faster, flash is awsome, bluetooth notifications i need to figure out how to even find the settings, and theres something else i cant seem to think of

And no slashcontrol.com or email in your photo gallery either.

We need an app replacement - it's not an upgrajde to an existing app.

(At this point, you're visualizing Bender holding up an applause sign for me. :lma0: )

;) - cheers, compadre!!

I love froyo man don't get me wrong, i can't seem to find the jit compiler app? If there is one to test the speeds... but damn they can make the 3g symbol look different , even change the Android man when making calls, but they can't add the 3d gallery to work with sense bs dude I wish I could turn off sense just to see it

First there were the GeeBees and the wifis...now we have the Jits too. It just keeps getting better and better.

Cloud based service aka Chrome To Android which is the ****ing SHIIIITT

No kidding. I LOVE this. Froyo is awesome. Being able to push web sites from my PC to my EVO in a matter of seconds is really cool. I was doing this last night for about an hour:)
Explain?

I dont see much differance in the update. Phone still runs about the same. Not much speed differance. Battery is still the same. Facebook sync finally works so thats cool. i synced with appbrain and hard reset my phone. For watever reason my apps after the reset are gone. So i have to start over. O well, didnt have that many. Anyways im not ranting. Just sharing my froyo experiance.

Use appbrain to keep track of your apps. Make a new list, called it "backup" or something similar then copy the "apps on my phone" list to the backup list. Makes reinstalling much easier.

Well is only a small update you won't see the big difference compare to 1.5/1.6 to 2.1 when gingerbread comes it will be a different story, I wish ore developers start using the.cloud service causethata the biggest thing for me
