Root Frustration with evo 4g recovery red triangle. Please help!

I've been trying to root my evo 4G for the last few days and it's been frustrating. Anyway I have successfully run the revolutionary program, but have been unable to flash anything, including clockwork mod.

In fact, I'm unable to do anything with recovery, I just get an image of the evo with a red triangle and exclamation point. Nothing I try works, there is no text and no way to get out of the screen short of pulling the battery. Also, I have the superuser zip on my sd card, but all my hboot looks for is the default image.

I currently have S-off, and the version of hboot revolutionary installs, but for some reason my phone won't flash. I try using Rom manager, but it can't get special permissions to load cwm.

Is there anything I can do? I just want to get tethering working.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok all you need is a custom recovery. so
1.download this file:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.rename the file by erasing everything but PC36IMG. whatever you do do not add an extra zip to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file over to the root (not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off then press and hold power+vol down
5.this will take you the hboot screen. if it is named correctly and it is on the root of the card then it should scan for it and ask you if you want to update.
6.select yes to update
7.now you have a custom rom recovery

once that is done and you have a recovery, report back so that we can make a nandroid backup.

hope this works for you.

Okay, that went through smooth. Thank you!

What's the next step?

ok now you need to make a nandroid backup (remember to always make a nandroid backup, they are your friend)
1.go into recovery and select backup and restore.
2.select backup and select the first three (it should already be marked off) and also select wimax. you only need to do wimax once.
3.keep this nandroid safe on your computer and/or dropbox or on the cloud. your wimax keys is for 4g and there is a very small posibility you could loose them.

after that i would read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

after you read that then i would try and flash mikg2.59. it is a sweet rom with all the bloat removed and sprint's hotspot hacked. also it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in. check it out in the rom/kernel sticky of this forum. it is under the gingerbread sense 2.1 section.

almost forgot, if you plan on staying on the stock rom then you need to flash the su (superuser) file as well. you can get it in the dummies guide i linked to you earlier.

Great! Thanks for the help. I got 2.58 installed and am now updating to 2.59.

Only thing is now I need to get wireless tethering working. superuser keeps force closing when i try to initialize.

the patch up to 2.59 should take care of the superuser issue. if you want to also you can just flash the old superuser found in the guide.

Alright, I'm now working thanks to your help!

The connection is a little wonky, but I'm sure there's info out there on how to correct all that.

Thanks again!

no worries. glad you got everything working. not sure what you mean by connections are "wonky"? if you can't fix it let us know what it is and we will see if there is a fix for it.

I'm having the exact same problem as the OP, so I followed your above instructions to the letter, but I am unable to get Hboot to update. It sees the PCM file, but seems to go right by it and goes to the white recovery option screen. Hboot never updates with the new PCM zip file I placed on the root of the card. Once in the white recovery option screen, I'm back with the same problem--choosing recovery gets me the red triangle.

Whats you h-boot?

If your trying to get back to stock recovery and hboot Run the RUU.exe available from the rooting for dummies gingerbread guide. It will update your recovery and hboot from your computer

you can also use this ruu:[ROM]RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_releaseto get you the latest ota stock rom and stock recovery. just connect the phone via usb and run the exe file on your computer.

Well, I'm FIRST trying to get into recovery in order to do a nandroid backup. After I do that, then do I wish to fully root this phone (I'm at my sister's today and trying to root her EVO for her).

Where is that? I can't seem to find it.

I don't want to load the .exe file to which you refer because that involves loading a ROM. Before I do anything I need to be able to boot into recovery to do a nandroid backup, which I'm unable to do.

Im very confused by your situation now. You cant do a nandroid if your not rooted.

Are you rooted? Do you have S-on or off? What is your h-boot? If rooted, what recovery?

Thanks for the information.
Well you cannot do a nandroid without being rooted. So that solves the problem with not being able to get into recovery.

Read the gingerbread for dummies gingerbread edition guide. It has all the steps you need in it and will walk you through everything you could need to know.

Well, before I DO root it, isn't it prudent to back up her current stuff? ;)

You can back up the SD card by copying it to the computer, but theres no way to backup the entire phone like a nandroid without being rooted

Gotcha, so how to get past this red triangle and get into recovery? Somewhere else I had read to flash the EVO recovery zip, but when I went to that geek site to download it, it wasn't there anymore. I'm open to any suggestions you have. I confess it's been about 10 months since I last rooted an EVO. :p

You have to root the phone using revolution. During the rooting process revolution will ask if you want to install clockworkmod recovery. You hit yes and it installs it for you.

Then you can create a nandroid of the stock rooted phone before messing with any ROMS ect

I did back up her SD card already. Thankfully, that's easy.

Just out of curiosity, do you recall how long it takes Revolution to recognize a connected device? I'm not that impatient; rather, just wondering, as it has been about 15 minutes that the device is connected as "charge only," and the "waiting for device message" still has the flashing cursor with nothing additional happening.

do you have usb debugging on in your phone?

Let me check...nope. It is off.

Turned it on, so that did the trick. Thanks. (Sometimes it's the littlest things, isn't it?)

Looks like it's doing its thing.

Just explain to her to always do a nandroid before doing anything with the rom or kernel or even flashing themes. Nandroids can save you hours of hair pulling frustration. Also Check out the Flash for us All guide in my sig. Both of you should read these guides and always feel free to ask questions :D
