Root Frustration with evo 4g recovery red triangle. Please help!

I think I'm going to save putting on a custom ROM until the next time I see her. For now, I wanted to root it, do a backup, partition the card, and install some apps like Titanium Backup. et. al.
 
That should do it! Just make a nandroid once your finished so that if she ever tampers with anything (by accident or otherwise) you have that to get back to!
 
Will do. BTW, do you remember how to make sure Busybox is on the phone? I forgot I'll need that for Titanium.

I've tried running a couple root-necessary apps, like Ad Free and others, and I'm getting error messages that say "unable to acquire root." Hmmm...

Yes.

Well, there is a problem, indeed. I downloaded busybox installer to get that installed, but when I try to run that app to make sure it's installed, I'm getting a message that says, "No root access!"

I can't believe that after all this, her phone is not, in fact, rooted. WTF?!?
 
Reboot into bootloader and check to make sure it says S-OFF.

Confirm this and we will work from there.

If S is still on, rerun revolutionary

It does say S- off.

BTW, IIRC correctly, after having the Amon Ra's PCM zip file on, and once I've rebooted into recovery, am I supposed to rename that or remove it? I thought I had read about that somewhere, but wasn't sure if that is relevant here.
 
Did you download the market superuser or flash the SU file from recovery? Either one should work but if you did one try the other
 
Correction. I downloaded from Market. That didn't work.

When checking the list of files to flash in recovery, there is none that looks like SU.
 
Now, the last thing I'm doing for her is to partition her SD card to free up some space on her phone.

Just so I make sure I do it right, one question--after I partition it and all, I just have to copy the saved files and paste them back to the newly partitioned card, right? Nothing special otherwise to do?

I ask because for now, I don't wish to flash a new ROM to her phone, just partition the card.

Since I'm not going to install a custom ROM at this point, when I partition the card, do I do anything additional like wiping certain things? I can't remember, and when I partitioned mine a while back, I did it in conjunction with putting on a ROM.
 
I don't think there is anything special to wipe with first installation here after partitioning, it formatted your card.

Now then, some roms will take advantage of your partition and install apps to it right out of the box. Read the dev's pages to see if the particular rom does.

Some roms need the dt commands applied in terminal emulator. You should see them listed in the sticky you are using to partition with.

When making a nand with a rom that is using the partition, you will need to put an x in the sd-ext area for the recovery to back it up as well, and if you use the new amon ra style recovery, you need to tell it to restore the sd ext as well.

When flashing a new rom now, and i would if restoring a nan, also, you want to use the option to wipe the sd ext now.

no need to wipe anything if that is all you are doing.
 
Yeah, that's all I'm doing to her phone at this time. The primary purpose was to help alleviate her low memory problems. I remember when I did it, I went from ~60MB of space available to ~300MB.
 
I'm new this stuff and today I was able to unlock my evo 4g. I know this because when I power on with volume down button it says unlocked up at the top. Anyways I want to put Mikg on my phone. I already have it downloaded and put on a different sd card. When going to recovery I get a red triangle and wont go any further. I tried putting the PC36IMG on the sd card and it went on. When holding down power and volume down it isn't bringing anything up to update or whatever. PLZ help me. Thanks
