Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Without root, apps2sd just trades off one internal storage partition for another, for a net no change.

Getting apps to the actual sd card is more work altogether and doesn't help if the app insists on writing to the /data partition, as many of the larger ones do anyway.

Wow this rain is ridiculous in the NJ area - flash flood warnings all over the place. Figured it had to rain sooner or later.

Good morning everyone - happy halfway there!

Good morning everyone! Happy Hump Day! :) First one I've celebrated in a while because I actually get the weekend off! :)

For those of you with Macs, this could prove very helpful:

EDIT: Rest in Peace Ray Harryhausen, pioneer of stop motion animation. Lucas has said that without his work, there would be no Star Wars. He was 92. :(

I just found out about this one yesterday - automatically sync your pictures with iPhoto - can't wait to add this for WifelyMon -

Harryhausen will always be great in my book. Mighty Joe Young, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, First Men in the Moon and too many classics from Greek mythology to name - he did a whole lot with very little.

halon - To get into the Doctor, it's helpful to get into the backstory and the lore - it's been going on a long, long time - I think it's something like 800 episodes by now. It's maybe best to start with Series 1 from 2005 (which is not where it all began, just where the modern revival did).

I did start there. I'm 9 episodes in. Every time I watch I'm always doing something else while it is on. I guess I'm really not giving it a fair chance?

Try the new Sherlock 3/4 episodes per season, started in 2011).

It may not be for you.

Time travel is one of the subjects done really, really poorly in science fiction.

If that's bothered you before and you like sci-fi, then spending time to get into the Doctor may pay off.

Each episode or two tells a story but the entire series as a whole builds on itself. It tends to be very internally consistent and because time travel is involved, an episode that seems "done" may get revisited and other aspects touched on later - part of the fun is spotting the teasers for that happening.

Cheap sci-fi has time travel as Johnny and Sally go back/forward in time, hooray.

In the Doctor series, you're slowly, slowly exposed to the fact that a race from the planet Gallifrey that can and has jumped about in time is a really terrifying idea. Power corrupts? The Doctor denounced the society but he's still called a Time Lord.

Lords - and the rest of us are serfs and playthings.

Then you have the really malevolent species that have stolen time travel from the Gallifreyans.

Years back, the series premise entailed the Doctor's renegade status with the Time Lords. With the new series, we suddenly find that there's been a Time War and the Doctor is the sole survivor. Or, in a universe with time travel - is he? What does it mean to be the sole survivor of a time war?

Mostly the Doctor is a madcap romp of fun and action with his trusty companion(s) of the day and the Doctor's largely space-cadet persona, and for our sake, one who happens to like humans in general.

But the persona is not all there is to the Doctor.

There are times when the words from the series in the 1980s rings loud and clear - "I may look like one of you and you may think that I'm one of you but I am not one of you."

They only expose it every so often, but when a Lord of Time has been pushed to his limit, he's a terrifying being.

The space cadet is the stone-cold killer on vacation from himself - because in his hearts, he's always been a champion for peace. When he's not, those episodes can make your skin crawl. Piss off someone for whom time means nothing and you'll find that there are worse things than death.

That's usually the point where folks start digging up the earlier series to watch. :)

I love the Doctor! The show has been on and off since 1963... making it the longest-running science fiction show in history. The way they get away with it:

Not only can he travel anywhere through time AND space (convenient!), but a Time Lord has 12 regenerations: breathing new life into a dying Doctor. Including the original Doctor, 12 actors have officially played the part... which will either force an end to the show soon, or force the writers to come up with some way to give him more regenerations.

His machine is called a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. There is a chameleon circuit that allows it to blend in with its surroundings: but it broke a long time ago, leaving it stuck in the form of an old English Police Call Box.

I started watching Doctor Who at the 3rd & 4th Doctors in the 1970s, when it had a very low budget and small cult following. Amazing how BBC picked it back up and turned it into such a mainstream hit.

I started on the 4th Doctor back then and later backtracked after seeing my first 3rd Doctor episode.

If we count original life plus 12 regenerations, he gets 13, we're on the 11th now, so we get at least two more. (No way Peter Cushing counts as a Doctor lol!)

Remember when Raselon appeared to the 10th Doctor? Did you notice what the dissenting members of the High Council did with their hands when Raselon censured them?

The High Council can grant more regenerations.

We ought to regenerate this further in the Doctor Who thread though. :D :) :o

It's funny how people will buy an In-App purchase just because its on sale. I might just leave my Full PRO Unlock on sale for a bit longer because it seems to be making people more interested in buying it than normal.

Stigy, that reminds me of the guy who created the 99-cent store. He recently died: a billionaire.

He said he had tried every price point, from 88 cents to $1.29 to whatever... and inventory would collect dust on the shelves. But then he discovered that if he set the price to 99 cents, inventory would fly off the shelves! It's like some magic number! No one knows why.

Anyway, good luck on your sale :)

Of the old Doctor Who, I grew up with Tom Baker and he will always be who I first think of as The Doctor. Of the newer, I love Tennant. I actually quit watching the Matt Smith Doctor Who because it was just too uneven.

Similar to how people will pay more for an item on ebay than you can buy the same item new at a store simply because they believe someone else wants it. THIS has always amazed me! Good luck with the app Stigy, Happy Thursday to everyone!

Happy Thursday everyone!

Found out that I have to work Saturday morning and during the meeting there was a grim line of "we'll be okay IF the server comes back up" - very reassuring, but I have my fingers crossed.

Just can't wait to get down to Disney in 10 days - get away from everything for a week.
