Gingerbread 2.3.5 Side Effects

My Samsung Prevail just did an OTA update on 11/11/11. At 1st glance, I was surprised to find the new interface to be a positive thing. However, now that a few days have past I find some problems with the new Android Update.

1. I have no Ring Tones anymore nor can I add any.
2. My Music App no longer displays my music stored on my SD Card.
3. Bluetooth is no longer working or connecting to my Jabra Speaker Phone. Oh yeah, I tried to Pair my phone to my Jabra but the phone still has the Jabra config on it.
4. I have an annoying reminder that I am running low on my phones internal memory. I never had this prior to the OTA update.

So far that's all I have identified as broken since the Gingerbread update last Friday.

If anyone has any knowledge of a work around or what is needed to restore the lost functionality, that would be a huge help for all of us.

Thnx in advance.

I couldnt OTA update my phone, used ODIN to flash to GB. Had some similar issues like yours at first until I wiped cache and factory reset from system recovery menu (hold vol+ and power while turning on phone). After that booted up, and this time let the phone finish "syncing" before doing anything. Not sure how necessary each step was, but phones working like a charm now.

Dont forget to make a backup first!

One big problem with gingerbread, one I dont know if samsung is really aware of. after updating system memory is less then 3mb.
The solution is to root the phone and delete the crapware.
deodexed helps tremendously too.

Thanks for your excellent guidance in troubleshooting these issues. I'm sure this will help many others who read over it.

I apologize for not getting back on this sooner. Yesterday, I began to look into troubleshooting and was able to recovered 3 out the 4 issues as follows:
1. & 2. Ring Tones - While not fully recovered, after browsing to my Music folder and double clicking on a tune then stopping it and launching the Music App, all my music re-appeared. I was then add the song as a RT. Unfortunately, I will have to do this for any other songs I wish to use as a RT. The bad or maybe not so bad, the standard RT have left for good.

3. Bluetooth - Is now functional, after realizing that to connect it to an existing profile with my Jabra, I had to manually tap on the Jabra Profile under BT Devices in the BT Settings menu.

I too am having to deal with the low amount of memory side effect as a result of the GB update. I guess I will have to figure out how to remove the Bloatware, being a nube to Cell Phone hacking, I'll need to spend some time looking over other posts here.

Well, after 4 days on GB I have to say I'm really excited about it and look forward to using my phone more than previously. What with all the issues with Pandora and BT hanging among other memory issues from apps that didn't close and release memory properly. I like the responsiveness and new text editing as well as the general interface improvements. I have noticed that my battery charge runs out sooner than before GB but it's not a big deal. So is the life of an Android at this point in time.

Thanks again Taco

I noticed after I updated that some of the apps were now taking up more space and that they added Books to my phone. There is no uninstall for Books.

I contacted Samsung about the "Low on space" issue caused by the update and they suggested I remove the battery for 30 seconds and power up. This did not make much sense to me and it also did not work. Trying to decide if I can live with the Low storage issue or if I would be better of reverting back to Froyo.

I just downloaded 2.3.5 and am having the same problems. I go to listen to my music and i click it and it says "not enough memory" im gettin pretty pissed and need to figure out a way to get it to work. i tried doin what you said to do, but nothings working.

That is the simple and easy solution:)

Use Titanium Backup to convert unwanted system apps (bloat) to user apps.

Afterwards you can use stock task manager to remove said apps.

OTA didn't work for me because I had rooted my phone and deleted the crapware under Froyo, so I Odined the Gingerbread update available in here and have the same amount of internal storage space I had with Froyo and none of the side effects you listed. YMMV.

After clearing all the crap out, on my prevail I have 26.8mb free of ROM and 86.6mb of system memory free. On my fiances prevail she has 27mb free ROM and 89.4mb of system free. You just have to remove the crap that comes stock, it's really like a new PC, all the crap the OEMs think you want/need.

The Low on Space issue isn't interfering with anything on my phone at this point so I really see no reason to root. I'm just not seeing any reason for the upgrade.

when my phone low space issue showed it would prevent me from receiving txt messages, so it can interfere somewhat.

After the update, I also noticed the low memory problem. That can be fixed by just deleting my email and facebook connections and clearing the cache. Then reestablishing email and facebook later.

Other gripes:
1) my battery no longer lasts the whole day. Half day at best now!!!
2) i can no longer pinch to zoom in and out of email messages. wth? this is the most annoying thing b/c i have to keep scrolling around the small screen to read messages.

Does anyone else notice the pinch to zoom and double tapping not working for emails??

I just noticed the shorter battery life. I also noticed that when I plug it into the wall charger it asks me if I want to charge it or use USB storage. That only happened when I charged it with my computer before. Strange. Is there a better battery that works with the prevail?

there is an 1800mAh battery out there, but most places want 40 bucks for it.
The stock battery is 1500mAh so I don't really see it as worth the money for 300mAh... that's like what? another 20 minutes?

my battery always says its charging... even when its disconnected. the battery icon stays flashing along with where it says charging at the percent on the lock screen. it vibrates randomly now, and i know its not those pocket vibration because ill be holding the phone in hand. i tried turning it off for 30 seconds, took the battery out, no change. turning it on can also be a pain in the ass, it jus turns to the big battery icon and says charging again, although its not. my phone was perfect up until gingerbread. id rather fix it without having to do all that computer stuff, i paid $200 for the phone, i shouldnt have to go through so much trouble. damn gingerbread.

Yeah battery life has went to the dogs with the official update.. I didnt even have to
touch anything and id look it would always say,, connect to charger.. but the extended
battery is really good idea to have either way every second counts...

Does anyone know of a way to change the vibration intensity since I updated my phone to gingerbread 2.3.5? I went through my settings and the menu to change the vibration intensity is no longer there. Also, is there a way to change the 5 things at the top of the notification bar? As it is "Wi-Fi, Blutooth, GPS, Flight Mode, and Screen Rotation" now, as I have my phone in silent mode 90% of the day and I'm not sure if simply putting it in silent through the volume keys will silence all of my notification sounds. If there is a way to change any of my problems, please give step by step instructions. Thanks!
