After seeing the posts here Desire Gingerbread Ruu available at HTC developers website - xda-developers and taking SURoots advice earlier I have re-rooted and flashed to an AOSP ROM again. I had a little voice telling me to not to update. Besides, I really missed having Droidwall, Root Explorer and Location Cache

I read that thread regarding the update and I came to a few very simple conclusions
1) The update is to different people, different things
2) The thread is full of contradictions and as such it is impossible to assess if the upgrade is of any use at all. The most noteable disagreement is the one regarding the moving of Google Maps to SD.
3) The problem with getting clear and concise information from those types of threads are the guys "cock" fighting to show off their technical prowess. It's a common problem when putting a load of nerds in one place, they all know best and their way is the only and best way.
4) Geeks and Nerds like to scaremonger. It seems to make them feel superior and if anyone challenges them.......they are not able to refer to conclusion 1
Just because it is different, doesn't make it wrong!
Anyway, I'm still using my Orange Branded phone, my internal memory fluctuates between 15-20MB free depending on if I have cleared the Cache. I'd like the update... OTA (If the scaremongers, geeks and nerds can decide if it is actually gonna happen) so that I can benefit from increased space on the phone. I don't want to root.
I want to press a button, leave my phone alone for a while, comeback and it be sorted. What's so bad in that? Being told that I'll be able to do that in June and it's now mid August is taking the mickey in my book.

But on the slight chance you aren't, it is quite clear that you WILL NOT get the update OTA. HTC has made that clear. So either you have not read the info, or you are living in a vain hope that the OTA update will happen.
The update is a case of running the RUU. A simple task that requires downloading it, and after installing HTC Sync on your computer, running the RUU .exe. No rooting is required. It an official HTC procedure.
Simple.
It debrands your handset, so you can get rid of the Orange rubbish you evidently dislike.
It's up to you really whether the pro's and con's of the update make you want to update. I did it as it gave me more battery life and some improvements in performance. The one downside for me was that it wipes the phone.
Does that make me a geek? Maybe. But then I suppose doing your Windows updates does that too. And installing iTunes.
So anyway, I guess I'll leave it at that. I do realise I've probably taken the bait

Yes its dead simple and almost risk free (I say almost because theres always a chance the person doing it is an idiot).
I've been on 2.3 for months and months. Its so much more efficient than 2.2. Would never go back.
2.3.4+ encrypts passwords over wifi now too, although the Official rom users don't get this benefit

actually thats what I've been meaning to ask....I know 2.3.4 had some security updates like the wifi password encryption...
but what did 2.3.5 bring?

I think maybe we should stop talking bout 2.3.5....we might make all those one stock 2.3.3 gingerbread jealous lol
Just to reassure Vicdude, the RUU is a one click operation, and as it's an official HTC tool it should be the one way of getting rid of orange crapware without voiding the warranty.

Rooting is an option, but if someone just wants rid of bloatware, unbranding is the way forward. Both void your warranty (except of course with the 2.3 update which HTC have sanctioned).
I'm not convinced rooting is an "Auto response"

I wouldn't say Rooting is an "Auto Response" either...although it probably *DOES* matter what device your doing it on.
For example, the old Nokia 5800 phones were 'rooted' as such and had custom ROMS 'cooked' for them, the main reason for this was so they could have a phone that resembled the N97 or the C6.
But in the case of the Desire (and similar that have memory issues) they were rooted and Rom'd mainly for the fact HTC overlooked the internal memory aspect and Androids ability to push apps to the SD card, even partially. Yes Froyo had better management for memory, but for us Desire users it really didn't do much. So an alternate *HAD* to be created.
Vicdude, you yourself even mentioned you would have around 15mb to 20mb depending on your cache size left and I bet you don't have a vast amount of apps right? where as us 'nerds' have probably 60mb+ and quite alot installed.
So while it might be the warranty voiding 'geek' thing to do to say "root straight away" we only say it because its often the best choice for devices such as the Desire. If there was no real inherent problems that didn't need you to touch your phone then it wouldn't be said so much.
