go check your local at&t store

I purchased the phone today from a store in Dallas. I talked to 3 different stores who said they wouldn't or couldn't sell it to me but I found one who could/would. I paid 49 dollars. Keep in mind I'd called their customer service earlier and threatened to change to Verizon to get their Droid X or whatever... and they wrote up in a note on my account that they'd give me 150 off the contract price of the phone when it came out. The store I went to honored the note in my account and gave me the phone for 199-150=49 plus tax and they gave me a new 2 year contract.

I'm calling tomorrow. I can't stand AT&T where I'm at, but I have another 3 months on contract. Since I'm at my current location for at least another year, so I was hoping this Captivate might fix some issues I have (dropped calls, lost text, service bouncing off and on/between edge and 3G). I can take a $350 bullet, if over 3 months my problem isn't fixed, but not a $500 one. $350 for Captivate off contract, or I'm leaving for Verizon this Christmas...

Sorry for the rant, AT&T just isn't what it use to be anymore.

lol dude i called up every corp store and retail store and i can confirm that they have them in stock.. they just won't sell them until the 18th....

zzzz i almost got one girl to sell me it but the manager stopped her...

well looks like im getting up early on sunday... or i might try again tomorrow ;)

IIRC, they'll let you extend your contract if you're within 6 months of the end date. It's definitely worth bringing up to them when you go there. I have 3 lines and corporate FAN sponsorship, so I'm able to upgrade and extend my contract every 12 months on my lines.

I went to the mall today and wasn't expecting them having it already here in P.R but surprisingly they did have like 4,i asked the guy to show me the phone and he just gave me a dummy phone not even a demo one and he was looking on the system for pricing and couldn't find any info then some other at&t guy was passing trough and he asked him about the prices and the guy told him that it was $200 with contract but they wasn't allowed to sell them till Sunday...bummer.

I wouldn't have a problem upgrading, if AT&T wasn't so bad in my area. Now, it may not just be the area, it could be my phone, I'll admit that. But I can't pay $200 to be stuck for another 2 years if it really is the area I'm in. I can swallow $350 and jump ship at the end of my contract (or stay and save my upgrade for something nicer), but I can't justify paying $200 to be locked in for 2 more years. To me, there's no incentive to stay with the network the way it is around me.

We just got a FAN account added to our family plan (I'm not even sure if that's what happens, but we have a discount) two weeks ago, so I may see I can get a FAN discount on the off contract price of the phone.

There has to be some marketing logic here that I don't understand. T-Mobil did basically the same thing they announced the Vibrant at $330 off contract and came back after a few days and said oh no it is really $549 off contract. Now AT&T first says $349 and changes their price to $499 for off contract. If I hadn't got one close to contract price I would have re-upped my contract it really is a nice phone, but I wouldn't have paid $300 dollars over for non-contract.

I just bought one from the northpark mall in dallas..they had it on display already and the stand said 499 but when it rang up it was 350.. maybe not all the systems are updated yet so if you get one early you can get the lower price

I'm posting from it now :)

Lucky lucky! I'm sure that will be fixed by Sunday (I'm still going to try though!). But I will try talking to Customer Service first and basically tell them I'm switching to Verizon at the end of my contract (which I really may just do).

You have 30 days to try it out when signing a new contract and/or buying a new device

When I went to the store yesterday, they told me it was $199 for phone + $75 because I am still a month out from being eligible for upgrade.

I just called the 800 ATT number to make sure that was correct. My Blackberry is basically dead(turns off if i use phone for more than a minute or 2). When I called ATT, the sales rep told me the $75 was negotiable, and in not so many words, they kinda pull that fee amount out of their butt and I could speak with a manager to negotiate that fee down. Not sure if thats true but I will find out Sunday when I go to buy a phone.

Also - I live in Louisville, KY and called 2 stores late afternoon today and both said no sales until Sunday.

So I called the one in Lawrenceville and they say I can go over and get it. I get there and they say that I can't until Sunday, I explain and they say they are terribly sorry and will hold one for me even if its against the rules.

I'm going to make a road trip tomorrow first thing in the morning to get it at the other place. Did anyone get there yet?
.

I got mine from the one in Carrolton, GA. earlier today. $199 w/contract, $499 w/o :(

i'll suck it up for a year with my pos phone and wait for the next iphone, sell it to a saudi sheik for over a grand. then buy something worthy.

the captivate may be a half compelling phone but not worth a 2 year contract.

Woa hey, I just called at like 6 pm and some guy named Chris said I could have it for $350. Did they tell you that too and it rang up as 500? I'm very concerned... I don't want to take an 90 minute drive there. Did you ring it up without a contract? Cause some of the systems are not updated yet and will ring as 350.

Good idea, but waiting for a reply first, maybe I shall also ask the lawrencville place to do that on the phone they held for me, and pick it up on monday since I will be too busy on sunday...

I should have done that in the first place!!!

ha.. I'm going nutz.. I have a Captivate sitting at the AT&T store literally with my name on it. But they say they can't sell it till Sunday. They said it's not even an item in the sales system yet. WTF? Is there a secret codeword or handshake you guys are using to get them to sell them?

think if I go up there with a picture of the posting via facebook that they'll give it to me for 350? haha worth a shot?

This is what I posted on AT&Ts facebook wall:

AT&T, you really pissed a lot of potential and existing customers off with the dramatic change in the off-contract price for the Captivate. There have been several people that were lucky enough to purchase theirs at the $349.00 price (see androidforums.com) and now you tell those that have been waiting patiently for l...auch day that the price has gone up by almosgt 50%. That is not very nice. I do have a suggestion that would make this right for those that have been following the launch of this phone. Make the price $349.00 for launch day only. Then do what you want after.

So I was near a Best Buy and decided to go in and see if I could buy the Captivate from them. A girl approaches me and I tell her that im here to renew my contract with ATT. She asked which phone did I look into buying. I told her I wanted to buy an android phone and it was called the samsung captivate. she said "oh yeah, the Galaxy S". She goes behind the computer. Gets her keys, opens a locker looking cage and takes out a Samsung captivate. I act cool. and she starts to ring it up....and then says Oh man im sorry the computer wont let me sell it because the released date is on the 18th...

I then say My brother who lives in texas just bought one from an ATT corp. store and so did my cousin. Can you please see if there is a way to buy it, I am renewing my contract. And she calls her manager. the manager tries but the system wont let her. She says sorry but they cant...

Looking sad i was going to walk away but then the girl says hey you want to use it? and im like sure! (since no att store would even let anyone near it) she opened a new phone in front of me. let me put in the battery and start it up. I ended up playing with it for 40 minutes LOL.

Still no luck.

and from what the system was showing, they said it was $200 w/ contract and 549 without.

That makes me feel better, the system showing $200 on contract. I'm planning on buying this on contract, and I was going to get it at Best Buy, but in another thread, someone said it was $229 on contract there, though it may have been a typo.

I wish I had an experience like that at Best Buy. Went in a few days ago, neither employee had any clue what I was talking about, and didn't check a computer or anything. I was in the area today, so I decided to check in again. The mobile department was really busy for some reason, and after waiting around for about 20 mins with no one to help me because they were helping other customers, I decided to just check back tomorrow. One of the people working today was working the other day too, so I wasn't real confident I would learn anything different anyway.

My problem with this is, with speed that the Android phones are changing and upgrading, this phone is sweet, but not sweet enough to commit for another 2 years. I mean it doesn't even have flash. This phone will be super outdated in 6 months i feel.

Exactly - there isn't enough going for this phone that would make me want to stay for another 2 years. I'm really going to try and print some Facebook/Twitter stuff, head to Best Buy and see if I can get them to price match

I was gonna get it w/o contract, but it rang up $499. Unless he can somehow override the transaction, that's how it rings up. I actually saw the computer screen when they scanned it.

Repost from XDA:

How many of you guys that bought for $350 off-contract did NOT already have an AT&T account?

I think that's the point people are missing here...people coming in off the street from other carriers, no phones at all, or pre-paid customers will need to pay $499 if they don't want a 2 year post-paid contract. They'll probably have to pay $50 more from other retailers (Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc) for this.

People that bought for $350 are existing customers and will probably find a contract extension applied to their account in the coming weeks. Good news is, they didn't use an upgrade.

People that bought for $199 can be new customers, but will either have had to contract for two years or if existing customers, a 2 year contract extension and will have used an upgrade on that account.

People buying for $299 got an existing customer discount and a 2 year contract extension on a non-upgrade eligible account. People buying for $149 got an existing customer discount, 2 year contract extension, and used an upgrade.

The AT&T Twitter and Facebook shit assumed that anyone they were talking to were existing AT&T customers, so that $350 off-contract was probably meant to read $350 non-upgrade eligible existing contracts.

And to top all of that off, some Corporate stores (I called 5 of them) are claiming they won't be selling this to anyone off-contract for 3 months. Now, if you look at the above criteria, those of you that bought for $350 that were already AT&T post-paid customers count as on-contract, whether you know it or not.

Long story short, good luck getting one of these at all if you're not wanting to sign up for a new contract, or don't already have one.
