Some people (like myself) do read and spend plenty of time learning about the whole process but are just unlucky. Things happen.

I would agree with that for anyone with a modicum of computer ability. I got a gist on what is happening during manual rooting, which helps tremendously when troubleshooting, and making subsequent adjustments on my own and not just flashing ROM's.

Having said that, many people just don't have the time or mindset to be able to root manually and will need something like Fresh's kitchen. Not to be a snob or anything (I am not a computer guy), but I think a lot of them will end up with serious phone problems.
 
I agree not everyone has the timeto do it manually but I gotta admit its much easier to troubleshoot if one can say issue with line 6 etc..

I think your problems are happening before you are at the actual rooting process.

Your computer needs a connection to your Hero phone, but it sounds like you have that already. For the computer to access the phone's SD card, you have to "mount" the phone. When the two are connected by the USB cable, flick down on the topmost bar (notification area) and you get the option of either just charging the phone or use it as a disk drive. To mount, select "disk drive". To unmount, select "charge only".

You only want "mount" to transfer files between the computer and phone. For all other operations, unmount so that the phone can access the SD card.

You are in college, right? There's got to be hundreds of folks around who can walk you through this stuff. Granted, I don't know how many kids can afford fancy phones with moderately-expensive plans like a Sprint Hero, but a lot of this should be familiar to people using Unix. Look for short scrawny guys with thick glasses :).

I rooted my phone the manual way and I did find it much easier for me..

it was funny though, it took me like 2-3 hours to figure it out lol

and this is the 1st place I came for help ...a few people helped me and finally got it right.

but if I were to root again, I would go the manual way....

lol i'm also a cheerleader(Well former) and model
so my pool of friends aren't exactly the brainiest
with always drunk frat boys, Jocks who get hit in the
head a lot and cheerleaders who are stereotypes haha

Oh also the way you were describing it above
i think you were thinking of 2.1 android
with the Just charge and Disk Drive terms
because i got that once i put 2.1 on my eris.

Is there any type of rom that I could put on my hero.

I mean yEah i know root is cool and all
but i mean is there a leak i can just flash on my hero
and call it today without having to be dumbfounded with root

Before the eris had the option of being rooted, the erises had a 2.1
leak(they now have their 3rd leak)
and i never used fresh kitchen or anything
i just put the file on my sd card
pressed the volume button and something else
and it booted in recovery
and took about 10 mins

I downloaded fresh kitchen
but when i go to autorooted
and run diagnostic
and yada yada yada
and i pass those 2 test i need to pass in order to autoroot
there is not button for me to root
nothing for me to click
 
forget using kitchen..just plug in your phone and follow the instructions using the cmd prompt..100x easier i promise

it's Monday

and the girlfriends are in the other room

so i am going to have to try to do it late

lol you dont need that much quiet time...seriously like 15 minutes :D

but if you just copy and paste the prompts as they are in the instructions you will have zero issues..most mistakes people make are spelling mistakes...i am a perfect example of that..i made many mistakes trying to type it by hand and when i just copied and pasted it worked perfect

I've been on 2.1 for a month or so, but from what I remember the stock Hero also gives the "charge only" / "disk" options when the phone is connected to the computer by USB cable.

From what you have posted, do *not* flash the 2.1 RUU leak. Repeat: don't do it.

It doesn't sound like you were ever rooted on your Eris phone anyways.

If you don't need to do root stuff and just want a 2.1 ROM, just wait 2 weeks for Sprint to release its official 2.1 update. There is a lot of cool stuff when rooted, but it sounds like you just want an update.

Unless you are really into this stuff, or have real need for rooting (e.g. wireless tether) you may want to spend your time doing other things.

To be honest, I really don't look at root
the way you guys probably look at it.

I just miss leap feature
and i also missed having full access to the market

I used to hate not having 2.1 nav on my eris
but sprint nav seems to work very well
and it's free at that

And I want the speed
and i am kind of curious about learning
how to create custom things
like bootups and what not

Also
No i never rooted my Eris
i did a RUU leak i guess
you call it that
way back in Feb or so
before we had the option
to root
the phone so after i did
i no longer could root

But i did root my droid as i mentioned
before
and i really do not remember it being
this hard..
sure i had someone walking me through
im how to do it for 4 hours
but it wasn't hard

A lot of what you are looking for are features of 2.1, not rooting. It is almost certain that the official Sprint hero 2.1 update will be out in the next few weeks (ha!).

But some people have fun mucking around with the phone, and you may be one of them. I don't see why rooting your Droid would be much different than rooting the Hero. I still think that you are not properly connecting the Hero with your computer. Anyways, several people here have volunteered to walk you thru it; just make sure of the connection before embarking on the actual rooting.

I prob. missed it, but how come you are going thru so many phones in such a short time?

Rooting opens up a plethora of customizations and apps that let you use your phone to its FULL capability. You'll definitely be happy that you rooted in the end.

Here's a video on flashing via recovery mode using Windows 7, I think it's probably similar to the technique you used before with the eris when rooting (holding down the power button and volume down key at the same time when turning on the phone). If you follow every step exactly, you should be ok.

If the youtube link doesn't work, just search "how to root sprint htc hero" on youtube and it's the first video that shows up.

However, I do recommend flashing DamageControl2.08, [ROM] DamageControl v2.08 | FriendStream, Theme Server, DConfig, more | Android 2.1 - xda-developers, instead of the rom used in the video. This ROM is one of the the best 2.1 roms available(leap,GNav, n all that). It also comes with a ROM and Theme updater app so you can keep the ROM up to date and change themes very easily all through the app. Good luck and enjoy your new phone, err, I mean rooted phone!!
 
One more thing, after you root your can save your apps to your sd card, but it needs to be a "Class 4" sd card or above(class 6 recommended). This is done very easily through recovery mode if you have the above ROM and recovery booter. For future reference, here's the steps:

1. Turn on your phone by holding down the power and volume down key, this should send you to a white screen with the skateboarding android bot.

2. Press the home button. You should see the HTC logo then your custom recovery bootloader(black backround, green letters). If you see just a picture of a phone with an "!", then you don't have a custom recovery bootloader correctly installed.

3. Scroll down with trackball to "Partion sdcard" and click with trackball.

4. Click "Partition SD" then hit home button to confirm. It'll ask you for a couple numeric values, just click the first one that comes up(32mb and 512mb). Wait until it's done.

5. Scroll to and click "SD:ext2 to ext 3". Wait until it's done.

6. Hit back button until you can't go back any further, then select "Reboot system now".

7. You're done! All of your apps should save to your sd card if your using a ROM developed by DamageControl or Fresh. Go app crazy! :)

The 2.1 update will never come, it's just a practical joke by Sprint so they can laugh at all the Hero owner's hopes getting shattered every time the update is "supposed to come out".
