Goodyear blimp--right over my house!

MoodyBlues

Compassion is cool!
Yesterday while puttering around outside I heard something that I've heard before, and looked up, only to see the Goodyear blimp flying around my neighborhood. I grabbed my camera and snapped some pics. I had no idea why the blimp was here, but assumed there was some sports event going on at the Rose Bowl [next door in Pasadena], and for some reason was flying around Arcadia, too. Not until I dumped the photos and looked at them on my laptop did I see that it had something to do with an event at Santa Anita Race Track, which is about a mile from my house. Here are two of the pics:

WOW!!!! nice shots of the GoodYear Blimp!!!!

ahhhhh, don't you just love Southern California and its weather!!!!

it was such a nice day today:)

Nice pics! I read in an article the other day that Goodyear is replacing their whole fleet of blimps with new faster ones.

 Isn't the whole point of having blimps at the places they're used these days is because they go "slow and low"?

"Hey look, the Goodyear jet! ...and it's gone..."

Thanks for the nice comments about the pics, everybody. Yes, it was a beautiful day--blue sky, no clouds, warm but not hot, just the stereotypical Southern California day. :D

LOL that's what i was thinking:D

Goodyear Jet, that's funny:rofl:
Too funny! The Goodyear jet...whoosh!, it's gone.

Lol! Don't shoot the messenger! It's not like they're going to be breaking the sound barrier anytime soon, going from a top speed of 54 to 73 mph, plus they are bigger.:)

Goodyear blimp: Goodyear to replace fleet of blimps with bigger zeppelins - Los Angeles Times
Egad! Now it looks like the Germans won World War II! They're replacing the good old American WWII era Navy blimps with the Hindenburg!

What's next? Goosestepping at football games?

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

I just LOVE the sound a blimp makes!!! We had one flying around a few years ago, coolest sound ever.
I don't recall why it was in the area, I think it was supposed to be in NYC but was too windy to land/tie down there...something like that.

We have a lot of hot air balloons around here in the summer, too. I think I might go up in one this year.

Yes, and it's very distinct. So when I heard that sound, I knew to look up!

It was CRAZY windy here today, so I'm sure it would've been grounded if it was supposed to do its thing here today.

my friend was saying that they have some kind of family events on sat or sun at the santa anita race track, but i'm not sure if that is why it flew over your house. that is carzy to see it that close. was it pretty low? or did you zoom in with your camera?

I have no idea! It's a mile away but I have no clue what's happening over there.

Yes and yes. :D It was low, but I also zoomed in; I used a 70-300mm lens on my Nikon D5100. Here are a couple more for a less zoomed in perspective--the tree is in my front yard:

The met life blimp will be paying a visit to us soon, as the RBC Heritage and legends of golf tournaments are coming up. Very nice pics!

It's the reality of daily life here in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. When I was kid the smog was so bad...

...that's what we saw, too, along with shades of brown. I'm really amazed at the change for the better in air quality here.
Careful! If you make too many assertions that man-made pollution actually exists and can be repaired, this thread will be banished to the Politics section! ;)

You mean like the thread about that well-known politician Annette Funicello?
That would be the one.

I have a non-expiring Warning on my permanent record here because some friendly banter with Gmash was not amusing to the mods there. Not a friendly place, that.
