Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

I followed the steps exactly, but when I opened Odin the com part mapping box was not yellow and had nothing in it. I don't know what the heck I'm doing and I've been trying to figure this out for about four hours now. Help please. Please.

1. Did you install the Drivers on your computer ?
2. Did you go to the "Download" Prompt on your phone ? ( holding Vol down + Power + Camera )

I bet your drivers are possibly not installed correctly.
 
Uhm, I think so. I honestly have no clue. It took me a month to figure out how to answer calls on this phone. I can't even fathom how long this will take me. Technology isn't my thing.
 
Well, first of all, the drivers have to be installed correctly or you can't connect.

LordVincent has posted the driver link in a threat ( 2nd post down, if it works, might wanna click the "Thanks" on his threat ) : http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-prevail/537433-usb-drivers.html

Might wanna try downloading and installing these drivers. And then try from a powered off, USB connected phone to use the key combination from my last post and hold it down until you see the yellow "Download" on the screen....... Then if you start Odin, you should see the COM in yellow as described.

hmmmm, so are you actually getting to the yellow "Download" on your phone ??? ( holding Power + Vol down + Camera button at the same time ? )
 
o.K.,

so what happen if :

1. At this stage ( Download showing), plug the USB cable in the phone and then into your computer.... Does your comp give you any messages or sound ?

2. What if you try a different USB port on your computer ( maybe a self-powered USB hub ) ? (and do the same as above)

I am thinking something with the USB port on your phone, or the cable or the USB on your computer is wrong.......
 
Here is a mysterious issue..

My phone has been rooted, for a month or so now. Had some problems in the beginning, but managed to fix everything and the phone was running very smoothly. So last night, the app that I was using froze up. I closed all running apps, tried to reopen, and it force closed. I tried to open another app, which force closed as well.

Decided to turn the phone off and back on to try and fix the issue, and now it won't boot past the Kouma screen. I've tried to reboot from CWM and that didn't work either. Battery was out the entire night, tried again this morning, and still nada.

Anyone got any ideas?
 
I went through everything step by step. After the CTMod screen came up, I went in and changed the kernal settings. When I reboot it freezes on the kernal screen and does not boot completely up. Any suggestions?

Is your sdcard partitioned?
What mode did you select?
Did you wipe the partition(s) you created?
 
Had the same happen to me...... stuck at the Kouma logo !

What fixed the problem for me was :

1. Updated to the newer "koumamod1.7.apk" via CWM APKInstaller.zip and "Install ZIP from SD-Card
2. Used a different SD-Card, could never get THIS particular 16GB/class6 card to work... very strange.... Tried 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 32GB cards I had, all worked fine, just not this 16GB card.
 
Ok, so I'm having a problem and I'd really appreciate some help. I have followed the instructions verbatim and upon rebooting the phone after the final step (selecting the data option in the menu for Koumakernel, checking the box, rebooting) it stays at the kouma screen upon rebooting and stays there. I've tried taking out the battery several times and rebooting, and even used odin to go back to the stock version, then redoing the entire process from there and it still does it. I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone has.

Oh, and I used FE16, and the CTmod 3.68 (which includes kouma 2.5) and have the 2GB card that comes with the phone.

I said I followed the instructions verbatim, so I did whatever it said to do. Now if there is a partition already created by the phone BEFORE you ever take any steps to root it, then no I did not delete the partition. Neither did I deleted it when I retried everything starting with odin (I was under the impression that by returning it to stock it did that automatically).

As for updating to koumamod.apk.1.7, I'm having issues because the phone can't find it because its an .apk not a .rar. I'm attempting to unpack it then repack it as a rar.

Sounds like the issue I had with mine, where you need to disable internal /data in koumamod. heres what kouma said about it:

the init process mounts the internal /data and then immediately overrides that with the sdcard. In that very short window, apps can start saving settings or try to access files that exist on one partition, but not on the other. I think the best thing to do is for me to remove that option in future versions of koumamod

Reflash CTmod, then when you go to the Koumamod settings, check what its set to by default. If it's on "None" (like it used to be) then you should be able to just change it to /data. If its set to "/ssm" (what I expect has happened) then you will have to wipe the SD-ext after you set it to /data. The simplest way to do it is just re-partition the SD card AFTER installing CTmod and setting to data

In more simplified terms:

-install CTmod and reboot normally
-change to /data mode in koumamod and reboot to recovery
-Re-partition the SD card then reboot normally

I know there's other ways to wipe the SD-ext, but thats the way I've done it

There is no partition on your sdcard until you create one yourself... I recommend rereading a little bit. There is a section on creating the partition. every time i have seen this issue it is because of a non partitioned card.

Boot into cwm
Select mounts and storage
Select format sdext

If it errors. You have no partition.

if it is successful, reboot your phone and wait at last 10 min before declaring a fail.

--if it fails, boot back into cwm
Select advanced
Select wipe dalvik cache
Select yes

Reboot
Wait ten minutes, determine pass or fail

Post results here


Koumamod.APK is an APP not a flashable .zip
You need to use blooddawn's apkinstaller.zip to make it flashable. Trying to make it a .rar will do nothing but break the app
 
To use the koumamod.apk, you need to get ( download from another thread ) APKInstaller.zip, then you put the koumamod1.7.apk inside this APKInstaller.zip, boot into CWM and select from the menu "Install ZIP from SD Card " !!!!! Repacking into a rar won't help !!!! Also, after this is done and you boot up your phone, you need to go to the kouma settings and check DATA ( in this version there is NO more checkmark ), then reboot again into CWM and "Format your SD-ext !!!! Then reboot !!

So I followed the guide to the letter, and have my phone set up with the FE16 package, CWM, and CTmod with Koumakernel. Everything went perfectly smoothly, and I don't have any problems except for Words With Friends crashing every now and then. That isn't my problem.

The problem is connecting the PHONE to the wifi in my HOME. I followed (the first two steps of) Lordvincent's post to set up wifi tethering (which works perfectly), but now I can't connect the phone to the wifi in my home. I back out of the wifi tether program, and try to connect the phone to my home's wifi, and it doesn't connect. In fact, the wifi won't even turn on, stating only 'error' when trying to turn it on.

Any ideas?
