Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Well, this was actually pretty painless and easy.
Thanks LV and vce :D
Got CTMod and Link2SD all set up for my friend.
(Yes I know, I should have done it in front of her eyes, I'll teach her how to use it :p)
Hardest part will be teaching how to set up Link2SD with another SD card :smokingsomb:

And does it matter if you press factory reset from the privacy menu?? Will that cause a brick? It does with a lot of LG phones...

Nope, factory reset works the same as the stock ROM.

But i noticed you mentioned links2sd. Any reason you didn't use the built in data2sd option?

Koumakernel has a built in option to use the sdext as the /data partition. Which imho is way better than links2sd

It's a "I didn't know that at all" kind of thing, nor do I know how to set that up... :p

How do you set up data2sd??

There is an included app called 'koumamod' you open it and select data mode, save changes, reboot into recovery, then format the sdext (NOT sdcard, just the ext) and reboot.

(It will take up to 10-15 min while it builds the dalvik. )

The other option is ssm (super secret mod) which mounts one partition as /data/app and a second as /data/dalvik.

This is slightly faster than /data mode but offers 'less space'.

Any special partitions needed on the sd card??

What do you recommend if you have a 2Gigabyte sdcard that most likely came with the phone?

Honestly, with the card that came with the phone, it's a toss up between ssm and your current choice of links2sd. The card that comes with the phone is a class 4. This may or may not be fast enough for /data mode. I know data mode offers more overall storage but for some cards may be slower. (lag)

I'd say give /data mode a shot and if it lags, switch to either ssm or back to links2sd

Eh, then I'll just leave it with link2sd :p

Glad we could help you out and you got your Prevail up and running..... No PayPal necessary, it's a free "servant-service" provided from above ! :)
However, if you ever visit NM, I can show you the bat-cave where I keep all my servants !! Grinzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hmmmm. Intersting. :-) I made donations to the other guys. ;-)

Oh, one more thing, When I made the partition, I made it huge because I thought this was going to be the part that was shared with the internal memory. Now, I am pretty certain that this partition may have been for the fixed data. If I were to want to make it smaller, would I have to re-install the Kouma mod and flash the SD ext again?

Thanks.
Monica

Yes you would, when redoing your partitions you have to redo anything that has to do with the sd card, back up all saved files, data, ect.. Redo and then restore everything that was on sd card!

I had to do it four times, but I finally got it to work. For some reason on the final bootup, the phone got hung up on the Koumakernel 2.5 logo and wouldn't finish booting up.

Anyway, things seem to be working properly and I imported all my contacts and reloaded some apps. I'm glad I persevered and now I have a phone without Poynt and Layar on it!

CTmod has "boatbrowser" is that what everyone is using? Or is there another browser that is better?

Thanks for all the help guys.

There are a few good browsers out there... You could try naked browser or dolphin browser, but imho, boat is one of the best ones available

Ok, I have been poking around on my new rom, and browsing super user access. I currently have Komamod and goomanager denied super user access, and ctmod allowed, is this the correct setting, or should I change it?

Erm, if koumamod is denied su, then you will not see the benefit of the extended storage. Koumamod is the app that tells the phone what mode to use (default, data, or ssm modes)

Yea you can toggle to allow. Do you even plan to use data mode? Is your sdcard partitioned to do so?

Yes, I plan to use data mode. I tried to partition my sd card. My card is a Samsung 16gb class 10 exactly as specified in the guide. How can I confirm that it is indeed partitioned?

How did you partition it? If you did it with cwm or sdparted then it's partitioned.

Just allow koumamod su privileges and then select data mode

then reboot into recovery, go to 'mounts and storage' and select 'format sdext'

once it finishes press back until you get to the main menu and select 'reboot system now'

(if it errors when you select 'format sdext' then it's not partitioned)

with cwm per the guide. I just followed your indtructions and did it again. Phone booted up as expected. I am only showing 36mb of internal storage, and 13gb of external storage, is that about correct? By now you have probably deduced that this is my first attempt to do anything with a smart phone, and I am on the steepest part of the learning curve.

If you choose data mode it should show your internal storage a the size of your sdext... So i'm going to guess you missed a step. Did you save the settings when you switched to data mode?

Ps- we all gotta start somewhere. You'll catch on fast

You picked a great phone to start on. We have an awesome community. Everyone here is eager to help.

Yes, I did save settings, I think.

Well, I picked the phone at random when I signed up for Boost, so I can't take any credit for that.

This is an awesome forum, you guys are all so helpful, and patient too! Thanks for the help and encouragement. Rooting a phone is pretty daunting the first time, especially with the threat of bricking it. I am at the end of my rope with it now, so bricking it would be the perfect excuse to get a new phone, but this one still suits my needs pertty well.
