Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

just wanted to come back in here and say thanks again. i ended up getting an 8 gig sd card and partitioned 1 gig for apps. my phone feels like a brand new phone. its way more responsive when i text, it doesnt lag anymore or anything.

the only thing ive noticed is it takes longer to open apps, presumably because i got the class 4 sd card. but thats a very minor complaint compared to running out of memory every other day.

So, thanks again! I learned a lot from this write up.

Holy moly, you guys--I was sure I was going to brick my phone. Never rooted anything before, and I screwed up everything that could be screwed up, but thanks to Lordvincent I was actually able to root this thing, and it actually seems to be working. Major thanks to LV and all the modders whose hard work made it possible for a dummy like me to figure this stuff out.

As stated in the opening post, I didn't write the guide. Ownership was just passed to me so I could maintain/update it. But I'm glad you were able to get it done :)

Egad, seems I spoke too soon. My phone keeps powering off, and when I turn it back on it sits at the Kouma Kernel screen until I reboot to ClockworkMod and format the SDEXT. Then it'll eventually get to my home screen, but of course all my apps and data are gone.

I hate to further impinge on everyone's crazy awesomeness, but any suggestions? I tried searching and couldn't find this.

could just be the sdcard. Some cards don't work with the prevail. Also are you overclocking? Not all prevails can be oc'd.

can anyone help me????? my laptops usb port is broke and i have been trying to find a way to root my phone without a computer and it is frustrating the heck out of me.... please help... i have the Samsung galaxy prevail.

Hi all, I have gingerbread 2.3.6. I'm a heavy reader, but I cant do anything on this phone due to internal storage. Is there a simpler way to root. I've seem some easy guides, but they just seem too easy.

This guide here is the best and most accurate one there is out !!! Follow this guide and ask questions along if you need. There are "tons" of friendly people here to help you.

Just remember : To root the Prevail you MUST have a Windows computer and use the program ODIN ( included in most of the base band downloads )!!!! There is NOOOOO other way to root the Prevail !

Good luck !

LV- Many thanks for all of your help! Thanks to rooting guide for dummies, I have now successfully rooted my prevail and have it almost perfect. I've always liked to tinker with stuff, but never have done anything with phones or computers other than use them. Now (after restoring to stock and re-rooting) I am extremely happy with my old prevail once again! I still can only vaguely comprehend exactly how all of this stuff works, but I guess that doesn't matter.
Maybe one of these days I can figure out how to back up my phone and be able to pick and choose apps and whatnot that I want to restore.

Backing up your phone is pretty easy. Just go into CWM, scroll down to where is says backup/restore and follow the prompts to backup your phone. :D

You can also learn to backup your apps with Titanium backup. It's also a good app to remove app and app data. I use Titanium on all of my devices.

Hello all! I'm a newbie to this forum and to this rooting thing. But I'm desperate..and will try to follow this rooting for dummies! Just wondered if all this info i.e. steps and instructions are up to date? Is is safe to proceed, or are some things different from page 1 of this post?
Thanks for any and all of your help!

That's the best guide to root your Prevail.....

Everything should be up-to-date thanks to LV..... ;)

My suggestion :

1. Read the whole thing once or twice slowly
2. Download the base band you like ( like FE16 or FF19 )
3. Download the ROM ( CTMod3.80 )
4. Follow the instructions closely and you'll be rooted in a matter of minutes

PS: Maybe some download links aren't working, just ask and I am sure someone will post it for you. And if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. Lots of very friendly and knowledgable people here in this forum.... ;)

Good luck !!!

Thanks! I will re-read a few times, I like to have all my ducks in a row before I dive into something...I somehow got my storage space back, it reappeared mysteriously, BUT I'm sure its temporary and I will continue on with rooting! If I run into trouble I will ask for some assistance ! One question..what is this 'band' you speak of? FF19? *never mind the question, lemme read it all again, Ill save my questions for later..:)

OK, here I go, wish me luck, I know NOTHING of this rooting, kernel stuff..NOTHING! Sure hope I have a phone by the end of this! EEEK!!

On second thought, I don't understand the kernel/ rom stuff at all and Im afraid Ill having nothing but a shell of a prevail if I attempt this. Guess I will be stuck with 3mb memory :( Thanks everyone who put all this work together..but it's like another language that I don't speak after the 'rooting' chapter of this thread.

If there is a specific step you don't understand we're more than willing to help walk you through it. Don't be afraid. If you follow the guide nothing can go wrong. There is very little chance of you doing irreparable damage.

Ok so maybe I just need to root first, then I will attempt the kernel and rom bits..but will need some help! How do I know which is most recent updated version of the kernel and rom 'links'? How do i unzip files and onto my phone through USB? will it give me that option? I only know how to upload from phone to pc i.e. pictures...please help!
