Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

This is the link to the newest Odin package

You will need a program like 7zip on your computer to unzip the files

You can get that here:
http://www.7-zip.org/

once you unzip the Odin package it stays on your computer. Odin is a program you run from your computer, not an app for the phone.

this is the correct version of Odin and the ops file for the prevail

This is the newest version of ctmod (which includes koumakernel)

you don't unzip this, just move it to the sdcard as is.

To move it to the sdcard, simply connect it to the computer and turn on mass storage (the same way you would to copy pictures to the computer) and drag it into the phone's folder.

Just make sure you go slowly and follow the steps thoroughly. And if you have additional questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

OK, instructions say to NOT unzip package, and to unzip rooted image? are these not the same thing? should I have two copies of same package? I feel so stupid, but my phone is out of storage again. Im exhausted from 'band aiding' my prevail for storage space. Please someone help me!

You NEED to unzip the FE16 or FF19 Baseband on your computer, connect your phone via USB and use Odin ( included in the Base band zip file ) to install the Baseband. Once this is done, you need to install CTMod, the ROM !!!

You DON'T unzip the CTMod3.80.zip ! The CTMod zip file you need to copy to your phones sd-card, than in CWM Recovery select "Install from ZIP" and select the CTMod3.80.zip ( or similar ) to install the ROM ( CTMod ) !

Ok I unzipped plugged in phone..yellow downloading on the phone, but when I open Odin Multi, I do NOT see a yellow box ..do i have the correct version? THanks for the help, I realize Im a pain in the rear :)

Is the phone in downloading mode? Did you install the drivers?

Edit - was viewing it from tapatalk. Didn't see your edit reason

OK, do i need to get out of 'recovery' mode in order to move ctmod to phone? otherwise, how will i select mass storage?

Go to advanced and select mount usb

(Or just let the phone boot up and them select mass storage that way)

Edit - maybe its in the mount menu

I figured it out, it hadn't downloaded completely, so I asked before I could actually try..:) Im smarter than I thought. Ok, on to the next phase, its rebooting now. THANKS!!!

YAY!! I did it..now its like new but way better! Now to add accounts, and apps and all that JAZZ! THANK YOU for your help! I thought I'd never get it figured out, but it was do or die for the phone..Love my Prevail even more so now! TY TY TY!

You have data more working correctly? Thats great news! Glad I could 'help' even though I didn't really do anything :D you did it all yourself

It's new and improved, although, it has a serious LAG...could that be my SD card? It was never this laggy...to the point that I think its frozen, then it snaps out of it. ANy suggestions anyone?

What class is your SD-Card ? I run CTMod in "Data mode" with a 32GB/class10 card and everything runs smooth.....class 4 cards work too, but might be lagging a bit.

I assume its class 4(it doesn't say on card), 2gb that came with my phone, I'll get a better card, what steps will I need to take in order to partition the new card? Will it be same process all over?

Same process

Meaning the entire rooting process? Please specify for me...Im a dummy after all.. :)

Lmao! Sorry! :o not the entire process.
You will just have to partition the new card.

Now, switching cards will basically 'delete all your apps and data' since all the apps and data are stored on the sdcard.

To prevent this, make a backup in recovery, then copy everything on the card to the computer. Now once you have the new card partitioned, copy offering from the computer to the new card (this will include the backup you just made ;) )
Now once all your stuff is on the new, partitioned sdcard... Just restore your backup and your all set.

The reason you have to restore the backup is because your apps and data are on a party of the card that windows can't see or read. Restoring the backup PS those apps on the correct place in the new card (in the partition you created)

make sense?

Edit - keep in mind the backups can be fairly large, so you need to make sure you have enough free space on the card to make the backup. I'll going to assume you made a 512mb partition (since your card is only 2gb) so it's safe to assume your backup could potentially be as big as 600mb (512 for the partition you created, and roughly another 80mb for the stuff ctmod installs. Though likely less, since you haven't used up all the space in the partition...)

I have a problem, I backed up old card, copied to computer..partitioned new card and now my PC doesnt recognize the USB to put back up onto new card...IDK what i did wrong... I screwed up, now I think all is lost...fudge!!!!
:(

ok, i tried it again, copied to new card this time, but when i click restore it tells me "couldn't open directory,no files found"

Look on the card, is there a folder called clockworkmod? That folder will contain your backup. If you didn't copy it to the new card, you need to do so before you can restore it

You did select the backup option while the other card was in the phone right?

I chose the back up when OLD card was in phone, then I copied to my PC, removed old card and inserted new shiny card and partitioned. Then I plugged in USB to pull file(back up) off of my PC onto new shiny card, but when i opened "computer' the REMOVABLE E drive was not there. SO I cant 'restore' backup bc I cant get it onto new card. I attempted this a third time and it prompted that files were copying to E drive, so I tried to restore again, and phone recovery mode said 'files not found'.

Ummmmmm, that's the Prevail forum and not the Galaxy S3...... You need to use the tools for the Galaxy 3 and not the ones for the Prevail or you might brick your phone !!
