Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Thank you for your guide, which is very easy to use for someone not so tech savy like me. I have done through all the steps, could not use the RUU from htcdev due to a 191 error, so tried the rom_02 file convesion to PG76IMG on my SD card, and I get the following error

Main version is older
Update fail!

Any suggestions?

Hello
please help out guys
I have unlocked boot loader at htc dev
with out running RUU (I forgot to do that)
and flashed recovery image through adb (I have placed it on sd card its says CID Incorct at HBOOT
but its not booting to recover mode (it struck with Black/Reboot)

Please help to root it

edit,
android version : 2.3.5
software number 2.26.720.3

Have you been trying the same rom every time?

No, one copy of Cyanogen 9 that was supposed to work well for Marvelc, 2 or 3 times, one copy of Zr0m2 linked from JohnnyWad, redownloaded and tried 2 or 3 times, and another directly uploaded by him. I made sure I deleted the old one before downloading a new one, so I didn't mix them up.

I did everything, but my phone still isn't rooted and I think it's because I didn't extract the recovery image in step 1. How do you extract the recovery image?

Just successfully rooted my Wildfire S with this method & i am very happy :D

Btw, i was unable to root with the Htc supertool & Unlock root :(
Then i follow the step 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E, 4F & the phone is successfully rooted :dancing:

Thanks a lot to the dev

:car:

Have you tried using a different SD card? It SHOULDN'T matter, but I've seen stranger things happen.

So my phone got run over by a car. Just scratched the bezel. Still works. :o

(Sorry for the delay, I got really sick)

Anyhoo, switching the SD card worked. Totally weird.

However, when I installed Zr0m2, my memory was almost totally full, even worse than it had been before. Which was why I rooted. It almost wouldn't even function, and I had to restore it back. Is there something I'm supposed to do to get all those apps it comes with moved actually on to the SD card? App2sd says the apps are on the SD card, but they can't be because there was a different SD card in it when I flashed it, and I certainly haven't moved them. Why is my phone full?

The problem is that I cannot go into recovery in the boot screen (volume down + on/off button). I get locked in the white screen with green "HTC".

I think it has something to do with a new type of hardware installed in this model.

Who has a sollution? Thnx

Did you flash the clockworkmod recovery successfully ?

Yes I did flash without errors or problems:
recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img

The go into Recovery but the the white screen with green HTC gets locked.

Wow, this is maddening. It's been one problem after another. Now when I plug the phone in -- where it was connecting before with no problems -- suddenly it's telling me that it won't install the drivers and even when I run the install again with HTC it won't work! I can't get the drivers to update online, I can't direct it to the folder through the device manager. Nothing works. Any ideas?

I did the root.zip flash and superuser asked for root permissions, but no other app will ask for root permissions. When I used root check from the market, it said the phone was not rooted. When I tried the SuperOneClick root method, it said the phone was already rooted... What is going on with this?

Running the SuperOneClick seems to have fixed it... I'll report back here when the next issue occurs. I've never had so much trouble rooting a phone before....

Finally got my Wildfire S rooted after a few hours of trying. Stumbling blocks along the .img , HBOOT and rebooting way but it all seems so clear now I've gotten through it. Delighted to not see that internal storage space low wizard popping up every 5 minutes

:)

Thank you all for the comments and help. I've been reading through much of this thread preparing myself for rooting my phone.

Quick question - would it be a benefit to use a different (and empty) SD card (not the one I currently have in my phone) for all the unlocking and rooting processes? Or are there things that would have to stay after I get everything done?

Sorry if it seems a "stupid" question - but I'm more of a hands on person - solely reading the instructions doesn't work well for me - I have to actually do it to totally understand.

And I've already done the baby steps of having HTC Sync and the other needed files/programs on my computer.

Thank you for any input - it is appreciated.

My plan is to root on Friday.....

You shouldnt need to change yer sd card. Unlocking and rooting wont put anything on it. If you plan on installing a custom recovery ( cwm, twrp ) for installing custom ROMs you will need your sd card for nandroid backups.
If you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask:)

I am happy to report that I have successfully accomplished the first part of the process - unlocking my bootloader!

I did have some minor confusion that "cost" me more time (not realizing that the files I already had in my SDK-Tools folder were the files I needed - and so tried to download other files that I really didn't need - duh to me)

But - I got it together and easily (once I realized my gaff) unlocked my bootloader. I am taking a slight break now to hang Christmas lights outside as the weather is beautiful today (and will be frigid tomorrow) - but plan to be back and continue to root my now unlocked phone! :-D

Thank you for all the help to this point and the guide. It is invaluable!!!!
