Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

I am now ROOTED!!!! It took me a couple of tries - a few because of my newness to things like this and a few because of my phone just not getting some of the things right in itself. But - I finally got it!!! I feel very good that I was able to do this and not kill my phone.

Am backing up things next so I don't have any problems in the future. Will consider where I want to go from here....I think the first thing is to freeze bloatware and move apps to my SD card so my phone works smoothly. Then I will think about what else I can do.

Thank you to all who have posted in this thread - all the comments, problems and solutions helped. Thank you CafeK for putting together the guide - awesome!!!!!!

Hey it's all going great till I get there (4. Type the following command: fastboot flash recovery [image name.img]. For example:
c:\android\>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img) My recovery clockwork is in C:\Android as well, but when I type this command in the prompt it says: 'c:\android' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. PLEASE HELP me to install the recovery. My HTC Wildfire S bootloader is **UNLOCKED**and all is like it's above in he text. Thank You

It sounds like you have a problem with your installation of SDK tools for Android. Try using the following link and make sure you follow all of the instructions exactly.

"Hello
please help out guys
I have unlocked boot loader at htc dev
with out running RUU (I forgot to do that)
and flashed recovery image through adb (I have placed it on sd card its says CID Incorct at HBOOT
but its not booting to recover mode (it struck with Black/Reboot)

Please help to root it

edit,
android version : 2.3.5
software number 2.26.720.3"

I have the same issue, and downloading the Rom Manager doesn't help to reboot into recovery because you need to have root access to do it :)

All i get when going into recovery from HBOOT is a HTC loading screen followed by a black screen (though the lights in my buttons are working)

I have tried to reflash the recovery-clockwork multiple times.
Am I missing something?

I appreciate the help so far :)

Apparently this is a known issue?

WoefulDerelict (the developer) says on XDA:

"Currently there is NO custom recovery that will properly support the fidgety new revision to the Wildfire S. If the official 5.0.2.8 results in a black screen on your device then you will not find any CyanogenMod kernel based software that will work on your phone. All CM GB based projects will result in a black screen and all CM ICS/JB projects will result in your device halting at the initial splash: the green HTC on a white background."

Has there been any progress on this?

Sorry to quote myself and reply in spam-like quantities, but i came across this through Google Search:

Lucky Zone: Wildfire S BlackScreen Clockwork Mod Recovery Fix

Does anyone have any experience with it? It's supposed to resolve the black screen problem.

This is more of a workaround than a fix. It will get you going and allow you to flash roms and make backups, but you'll need to be connected to a pc every time you use your recovery, otherwise you'll still have the black screen. Something similar happened with the OV. The manufacturer changed the screen from one made by Novatek to one by Hitachi. Of course, the new screen used a different driver resulting in a lot of black screen issues. Eventually developers were able to get the correct drivers and fix it. I'd recommend asking Andyopie150 for help. He is a guide here, very helpful, and has experience with black screen recovery issues.

i follow above steps, but this give me error "main version is older" update failed.

what to do to update the bootloader as in my WFS bootloader H-BOOT-1.09.0099 how i can downgrade to H-BOOT-1.08.0099.

help please as i m not able to root this device.
There is no need for you to do anything else with your bootloader as I just saw in another thread that you posted that your bootloader already says *** UNLOCKED ***. That means you can proceed from step 4 of the guide.

Cheers!

Hey, I am new to this forum and I have been following this rooting process on my Wildfire S - Marvelc.

Can someone please help me? I am stuck on step 4C and I cannot get past it. When I flash the recovery clockwork 5.0.2.8, everything goes fine. But then, when I try to recover, it goes into clockworkMod only BRIEFLY and I barely have time to navigate to the sd card selection before it re-boots!! A couple times, I almost made it to the root.zip file but then it switched over to the HTC plash screen and re-booted for no reason! Can someone please help me find a better work around for this? I am really new and I would appreciate the help as I try to get this rooted. I have spent 4 hours on this........

Thanks!!

Just not when I went into the HBOOT screen, it says:

Model ID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Press power to reboot.

I have never seen this before..........what did I do wrong?

I found out what happened with this and now my HBOOT is working properly. I would still appreciate a reply on how to load the root.zip file in my post above.

Thanks!

I'm already done unlocking my Wildfire S (S-ON, **UNLOCKED**). I get stuck unfortunately at Step 4. When I get to HBOOT, it scans for the the zip file and it says something about the file being unavailable. It doesn't change to FASTBOOT USB as you said; all the USB drivers are installed as far as I'm concerned. Is there anything else that I should check into?

jonny, what does this mean? I am having same problem with the HTC splash screen popping up.

Thanks.
TWRP is another recovery software that has come out not too long ago. Unfortunately if your screen is stuck on the HTC splash screen, it's a problem that has no solution, no matter which recovery you use.

@vliktor
The phone saying files are unavailable is normal. Nothing to get worried it will always say that. Once that has happened, plug in the USB and fastboot should automatically come

Like caro said twrp is another type of recovery. Cwm gave me reboot problems so i flashed twrp the same way you would cwm. After that no more recovery reboots, for me. Just search twrp 2.2

The original guide says FASTBOOT should change to FASTBOOT USB, but it never does that on my end. HBOOT changes to HBOT USB PLUG (or was it PLUG USB?), though.

4A. Install ClockworkMod Recovery
1. Download the official 5.0.2.8 image at ClockworkMod

I have a Marvelc phone from Virgin Mobile. I updated to 2.3.4 (2.3.5 not available with VM I guess). Bootloader started at ***LOCKED***, was able to unlock using the htcdev site. I tried flashing CWM, but got the same problem others are having where when trying to run it, it just shows the HTC logo and reboots the phone.

I then installed TWRP 2.3 without any problems, however when trying to install root.zip it just says Error.

Though through Googling I think this is a problem with 2.3? I noticed this on the TWRP site:

Since TWRP 2.3 is based on AOSP jelly bean sources, TWRP now uses recovery API 3 instead of 2. Some zips may no longer work if the developer is using an out-of-date update-binary. This API change should not be a problem on newer devices, but older devices will probably encounter several zips that need to be updated. If needed, you can try using this update-binary that was compiled with current sources. It goes in your zip file in the META-INF/com/google/android folder.
Should I just flash 2.2 instead, or is it worth trying to update the zip? Or is that even possible from an end-user standpoint?

Hi sirc, welcome to android forum.
I would try flashing 2.2. Let us know what happens.

Thanks. I'll give this a shot this evening and post my results.

Okay, so using CWM 2.2.2.0 allowed me to install root.zip, but now I'm having problems with Superuser.

I first installed Titanium Backup and it worked fine, asking for access, and after granting it if I launch Superuser, TB is listed there. Next I tried SuperSU, and it tells me the SU binary needs to be updated, but says installing for a while and then says the update failed. I also tried LinkSD and it either says it doesn't have Superuser access and to restart it (which changes nothing), or that the Superuser process has stopped running.

Any ideas?
