[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Ok so I have rooted my phone and actully been able to flash ROMs and recover with Nandroid.
One thing that I have not done is been able to find how to wipe my Dalvik cache.
Is it supposed to appear as an option on my reboot scrren on my phone? Is it only done through adb?
I have not partinioned my sd card, will do when I buy a bigger/better one, would this have anything to do with not having a Dalvik cache?
I am new to this and trying to learn and there is nothing that annoys me more that not knowing or not understanding...if there is a thread that expalins this, please point me in the right direction. I will be very much gratefull

Just rooted Friday to Fresh 2.0d after having some reservations.

Autoroot would not work on my phone - the problem with "failure to push files". So I rooted manually and it was VERY EASY. For anyone on the fence, just follow the guide; I did have a few problems that I worked out on my own during the process.

Questions (I have searched but Im having trouble finding answers):
-The keyboard that comes with Fresh, the speak-to-text doesnt work. Is this normal?

-I figured out how to get rid of the smiley for the old minimize button, but it only works in landscape mode. Is this normal?

-I have a "with google phone," I used the 1.5 Recovery Image instead of the 1.2.3, do I need to go back and add the 1.2.3 image

well... the guide at the beginning of this thread covers how to wipe...

Yes it does, but there is nothing specific to the Dalvik cache or how, where to find it...

I am looking at my recovery screen and there is wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition...
There is not a just wipe option...

this is with ClockworkMod Recovery v1.8.1.4

Keyboard questions - I didn't like that keyboard so I put on a different one, so I honestly can't answer those for you.

As for the recovery image, you are fine. You do not have to downgrade. In fact, you can upgrade to 1.6.2 if you want, but you don't have to.

You asked the same thing over on xda on they gave you good advice. Flash the 1.6.2 RA instead (make a nandroid first). There is a link to the 1.6.2 RA in the tutorial.

As for how to flash it, follow the guide and you'll see the section that describes how to do it.

i tried to do it manually but the second command i put in "adb devices" this came up:

C:\Users\Rachel>cd cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>

can you help me please?

you mistyped. According to what you have there you did the cd command twice. Try to copy and paste the commands instead of typing.

If you extracted everything properly, it will work.

if you are using a recovery other that RA recovery then I'm not sure how much help you'll get. you do have a Sprint Hero correct? (with a Sprint plan..not another carrier and a Sprint phone)

nevermind i fixed everything. i'm rooted now! thanks for your help though. but one last question..when i hook up my phone to the fresh kitchen is it supposed to say rooted when you hook it up..? because in flipz video his says its rooted at the bottom but when i hook up mine it says the battery power and if my phone is connected or not on the bottom.

ok so i did this and at the last step when i install the new rom it just says "failed 'bad'" so what the hell all i acomplished was resetting my phone lol

ok i think i did not give enough detail in my last post. i used the quick root using kitchen. then downloaded fresh 2.0d. i put fresh on my sd card and booted in recovery mode. i wiped the data and dakvik and then clicked "flash zip from sd" then i chose fresh and it begins to install saying
"install from sd card...
finding update package...
opening update package...
E:cant open /sdcard/ fresh-cdma-hero-2.0d.zip
(bad)
installation aborted."

so i rebooted the phone and it is not bricked, just reset to factory. how do i fix this?

i can't find root on my sd card when i mount it but i can find it when i look it up on my phone in astro..should i just make a new folder that says root..?

Root is the top level... ie. when you mount your sd card it says F: removable disk or something similar. just drag and drop to the removable disk f: and that is the root of the card..

;)

thanks! i'm getting a message now that says "wants to run: /system/bin/sh as root:root"

it says alwaya allow, allow, always deny, and deny

what should i pick
