[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

so i'm looking at the live wallpapers and not sure which one to download cause there two links.. could you help me out?

DOWNLOAD: http://link.geekfor.me/freshopenglslwp

I just created an “undo” patch for anyone that decides they don’t want this OpenGL fix for any reason: http://link.geekfor.me/openglundo — This undo will put weather animations back on and will revert OpenGL back to ours. It will still leave you with the LWP-abled Rosie though.

alrighty then! thanks for the tip. but how do you see the lwp that are on it? cause i don't see them or i don't know how to change my wallpaper.:/

i found them but when i actually set the lwp it doesn't set. i can preview it but it doest go on my main screen it just shows the normal wallpaper

Re-read the guide. It tells you how.

Typically means a bad download. Download again, make sure entire file transfers to SD card, and try again.

well regardless the 2.0d link is pretty much dead. the .zip folder it downloads is empty and can not be extracted or ran. at least not for me and i tried it like 5 times.

anyway 2.1.1 is perfect for me. i did the venalla lock screen patch but i get haptic feedback when i use it can i turn this off? haptic is off everywhere else on my phone...

Noob here...I want to root my Hero, but I currently have 32 mb of space left on my sd card. Is that a problem? in order to upgrade to 2.1 or that Fresh 2.1.1 I need to be able to fit that whole zip file on my sd card?

So far the only thing I;ve done is install kitchen program and now i get the menu when I boot up my phone and dont know where to go from there...

Thanks

oh and how do i run apps2sd? the apps still save to intenal mem....do i have to format? how?

Search is your friend. I can't tell you how many times this question has been asked and answered......

Check out this link, it has some FAQ, one of which explains apps2sd:

The amount of space on your SD card is important for a few things. First, after you get done rooting and installing a ROM, the .zip files you used do not need to remain on your SD card. Where the space comes into play is with the nandroid backup. When you create a backup, it makes a nice big backup of your phone. You need space for this. Mine right now is about 235MB.

As far as what to do to root, please read the guide.

so i'm trying to dl the lwp for rosie. am i supposed to copy the file to the root of the sd or copy the file to the folder rosie scroll..?

After holding out all this time, it took the release of the Official 2.1 from Sprint to motivate me to root. I followed the guide here for manual rooting, and I am now ROOTED! Do I get to do the dance now? Then baby steps.

First up is lunch, then going to try my hand at removing some Sprint bloatware from 1.5. Or shoud I just flash a ROM? Even though I didn't need anyone's help, I am glad that you are all here anyway...the comfort zone ya know! ...and the forum was not down as it has been lately.

ccapasso, thanks for the great guide!

Argh, first issue, got Titanium Backup from market and get error message "..could not acquire root privileges. ....please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox..."

I did create nandroid backup so I am rooted.

Make sure usb debugging is on, and that you checked unknown sources in the Settings>Applications menu...
