[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

At this point, are you able to get the phone to turn on or anything? I do not know enough regarding flashing radios to tell you if you can flash a CDMA Radio to fix what you've done.

From what I've read and understand, flashing a GSM ROM (which flashes a GSM Radio) will brick your phone.

mmm.. i see. no i can't turn it on. when i plug it into the computer, the red light will come on. and when i hold the home key and press the power it flashes but nothing else. bummer man =/ looks like i really messed this one up. if there is anything you may know that may fix this problem, I'm open for suggestions and willing to learn new stuff. thanks again for the information already provided.

alright.. so i've been reading. something i obviously missed before =/ hahaha i see that that is exactly what i did: flashed GSM onto CMDA. lesson learned. but that would be nifty if there were a way to correct this error for future occasions.

stuff like this happens to the best of us all the time haha i have no earthly idea how to even start on a ROM or half the other stuff involved with rooting, but i had one hell of a time and can't wait to get back in the game again. i'll keep reading up on more data and will make the next round better.
thanks

by flashing a GSM ROM to your CDMA phone... you have successfully bricked it... there is no repair for this... there are 2 options..
1. own up to it and buy a new phone
2. lie to sprint and tell them the phone died. pay the insurance deductible and get a new phone.

obviously, the correct moral choice is to own up to it and buy a new phone..

which is what i plan to do. although i don't have the funds at the moment, i will definitely buy another hero haha

Sucks man!! I would only stick to the roms, kitchens and tweaks that people on this and similar forums have already tried and been successfull with. There are so many custom roms for so many different phones its not very hard to find the wrong one. Always check and then double check to make sure you have the proper one for your particular phone. Good luck with the next phone!!!

truth homie.

so what if i managed to get the phone to go into recovery and then installed fresh 1.1 again and then i wiped it to the recovery image 1.5.2... and that's what i left it as... (i have a random thinking process) everything works at the moment... not sure about calls and what not. i'm going to push the RUU back on and see what happens. i've already switched the line back to an old bb. think it would be able to completely and properly function?

if you can get to recovery, flash Fresh...then did a wipe... it "should" power up to a working phone. if you RUU at that point, you have a out of the box new unrooted phone.

Agree with the above. Basically, if you can get back to Recovery, you can do almost anything. Once in Recovery, you can wipe and install a new ROM or whatever you want. I have seen people that get stuck, go ahead and boot into recovery, flash a working ROM (Like Fresh 1.1 for example) and then reboot and all is well. The main thing is being able to get into recovery :)

Hey guys, newb here. Purchased my HTC Hero today and have been reading and looking at rooting/flashing my anticipated phone almost daily for months now. I'm positive that I rooted the phone manually correctly. But I'm getting a bunch of force close errors whenever I load roms onto the phone, mainly Fresh 1.1 and Fresh 2.0c. Such as The process android.process media has stopped unexpectedly, please try again. Did I miss something during the root or flash? Please help!

Not likely. However, if you are switching from ROM to ROM, especially if going from a 1.5 to a 2.x ROM, you have to WIPE. Did you make sure to do that?

Usually if you are getting a bunch of FC, it is a good idea to WIPE and reflash the ROM.

Would I be doing a wipe data/factory reset? I was hesitant of that because I didn't want to mess up the rooting phone.

You won't unroot it, but all your contacts will have to be re-synced, and any the apps you've installed will all be gone. It's a good idea to install and use backup apps before you wipe your data. ASTRO can do your free apps but no data, and you reinstall them one by one. For $4, Titanium will also backup your protected apps, user data associated with your apps, and reinstall them all with one click. Sprite Backup can backup and recover system settings, SMS/MMS, bookmarks, call logs, non-Google contacts & calendar, and some other PITA to restore data that I can't remember off the top of my head right now (sorry).

Thank you so much guys! I have a working 2.0c rom on my Hero now!!!! :D. Loving it so much more then stock... Now it's time to find out what other cool options I have with Fresh 2.0 :D

Which 2.0c?

Edit: Nevermind, found it, thanks for the heads up.

Just any widgets, what tasks 2.0c can complete that the stock couldn't? Or Vice Verca. I'm very new to this, just looking for any information really. I'm so happy I ditched my iPhone for the brilliant peice of a device.

Please Help - download this file, but when I try to open it I get the following error:
Error: internal error processing iso image

Step 3: Download the Hero recovery image from http://www.androidspin.com/downloads...roc-v1.5.2.img Place this file in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools as well.

Anyone else having a problem with this file? All others I downloaded in the steps work fine.

Thanks for your help!

Link updated in Tutorial as the old link died. Mystic, I don't think your link is working though. I uploaded it to 4shared account. Again, main link is now updated. Let me know if any problems.
