[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

I have had the phone for a month and love it. I dont see a reason to root other then I want 2.1 . And sprint says a different date every time i call. and I am reading all these posts and people loving there 2.1 roms.hell i dont even know how to choose a rom but ill figure it out. im just worrind that it matters what version my hero is

If you have a sprint CDMA Hero It should look like this:

The HTC Hero (GSM Version) looks like this:

I know what phone I have and thanx. so what you are saying is orange and eclaire are the names of diff romss? i guess i asked the wrong question realier. i was told by someone that if my sprint htc hero cdma had 1.56.651.2 software it was orange not eclaire and i would brick my phone if i tried to root orange? are you familair with this?

You have what is called Cupcake. Eclaire is 2.1. I am not sure about orange.

As for the different ROMs, you MUST flash a ROM that is for your CDMA Sprint Hero. There might be a ROM you can flash that is called orange, but you have to make sure it is for CDMA Hero.

Before you can put a ROM on your phone, you have to root it. Please read through the guide and hopefully it will make more sense.

Orange refers to the GSM Hero found in the UK..

Android version 1.5 is called cupcake
Android Version 2.1 is called Eclair

follow the rooting guide at the beginning of this thread and you'll be fine. then flash a custom ROM like Fresh 2.0d or Damagecontrol 2.0.7 to get Android 2.1 running on the phone. ONLY FLASH ROMS for the CDMA HERO. FLASHING ANYTHING OTHER THAN ROMS FOR THE CDMA HERO WILL BRICK ( render unusable) YOUR PHONE.

there.. can't say you weren't warned..

This worked 100% perfectly for me. I was very scarred to do it but utterly sick of waiting for Sprint to release the 2.1 update. This was massively less painful then I anticipated, and didn't go wrong at any point. I'm in love, thank you so very very much! =)

Which 2.1 rom did you guys flash? And is it true that if you flash or root your gps ,camera and other things wont work any more?

Please do a bit of research/reading.

There are some ROM's that are considered DEV-ROM's, meaning they are still in development. Others are more complete.

For 2.1, I personally recommend Fresh 2.0d. It has everything working.

I believe there is a problem and it was discussed somewhere (can't remember where link is) about trying to do this after you have already installed the leaked 2.1. From what I understand, it already came rooted and many people installed it and then found that they couldn't use kitchen with it. If you are having problems, I would talk to them about it in that thread:

have you verified that the file is on the root of the SD card?

Yes... I even used a blank SD card and copy it directly to card when the push didn't work.. And I followed the directions to the T. I need to get back to the orig. rom... This leak 2.1 is to glitchy for my taste...

Is there a command that will show me what is on the card before I try the flash command

Im sure this has been answered, so dont get mad. I am just trying to look through all of this and want to verify that in order to install the Fresh 2.0d on my Hero i need to root it as well? On the website where i downloaded the fresh 2.0d it didnt say anything about rooting only doing a full wipe. Im just getting confused. Can someone set me straight? My hero is so laggy and i really want this 2.1..

<-----Just noticed what time i posted this at....haha

Yes, you must root to install/flash any custom ROMS.

Cheers!!! Went into the Kitchen and as good as it looked, I had a minor loading issue. Went the manual way AFTER I watched the video. BIG HELP....finally Rooted...thanks to all the peeps that answered other peoples issues as that is what helped me.

Now onto a ROM....

weeeeeeeeeeee

I am clueless on how to flash fresh 2.0d, i guess the guide isnt helping. ive rooted my phone, the guide tells you about fresh 1.1. does that method work on fresh 2.0d. is there anything that i need to do before flashing.

Lol. I have as a suggestion Fresh 1.1. I have also stated that there are several ROM's out there and to read about each as the DEV puts instructions about them.

Yes the concept is the same for flashing Fresh 2.0d. However, Fresh 2.0d does state that you need to wipe (data and dalvik) before flashing). If you don't know how to wipe, check the FAQ section of the guide as it is explained there.

Thank god for me doing a back-up as instructed!

Downloaded Fresh 2.0d

Wiped as instructed

Zip file was corrupt (due to my error, not Flipzs')

Nandroid restored and tried again, BINGO!!

LAG be History, Cheers!

You have to make sure the recov img was placed on the root of your SD card. There is a newer version of the recov img as well which you can find here xda-developers - View Single Post - [Recovery] CDMA Sprint [07-Mar-2010] RA-heroc-v1.6.2

Also, make sure that your SD card is not mounted during the time going through the process of rooting.

Ok well i may try again. I have a question about the recovery images. Are these recovery images the stock system that comes from sprint/htc? In other words, after i root and delete the useless apps, if i need to recover for any reason will my device be the same as when i brought it home from the store? I mean are these official recovery images? also, after i root, if i choose to update the fw over the air, will that restore my device to factory firmware? Thank ypu for your patience as im new to android

Please read through this FAQ/Guide. Every single question you just asked is answered right here.

Tried autoroot, could not "push" my files.

Tried manual, worked like a charm and was easier than I thought. Thanks for the tutorial.
