[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Please read through this FAQ/Guide. Every single question you just asked is answered right here.

It seems to me that these recovery images/files are modified or custom. After i root, if i select update firmware in the device's menu, will that action restore the device to default? Thank you for your patience as i am new to android

I've been out of the loop for awhile. I have a Sprint HTC Hero, and I am currently running Fresh 1.1. I see that Fresh 2.0d is out, and I would like to upgrade my phone to run Fresh 2.0d. After reding several posts, the way I understand it, I have to go back to a recovery image (RA-heroc-v1.6.2), and then flash the Fresh 2.0d ROM?

I am not too sure if these are thesteps to follow, I need some confirmation or a general overview of the steps to follow.

Thanks

I think you are getting a bit confused. The recovery images are modified/created. However, to restore back to default (un-root your phone) you must run the RUU (which is all described in the FAQ Section).

Nope. Since you are already rooted and running Fresh 1.1, all you need to do is boot into recovery, wipe data and dalvik, then flash Fresh 2.0d.

I am a bit confused. So there is no way to REALLY get back to factory settings or default because the recovery images are created by users or modified files?

No. Once you run the RUU, it will completely put your phone back to Stock. This is stated right in the FAQ. I understand that you are new to all of this, but it isn't something you should just jump into. I would suggest reading through this tutorial/faq.

Thanks. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens... Not that you care :o

There are a few people on this forum who really care. probably more than they should. The guy who started this sticky and answers just about every question thrown at him for one, and actually, quite a few others. Ergonzalez, we're all here to give and receive info, because we share a common interest. We do care and will help.

:D

i need some help!

i did all the command lines but when i get to line 16 "su" i get su: permission denied. what did i do wrong? i followed everything step by step

Lol. I see you did post this here, after I checked my pm. As stated in my message back to you, make sure USB Debugging is enabled and that you do not have your SD Card mounted.

lol yeah...

the sd card is not mounted and i enabled usb debugging before i began..

any other ideas?

**i was following the video if that info helps

yes that problem was solved..thanks...i got a new issue for ya :D

i downloaded the pre kitchen and i clicked the ? and the test ran and this came back...

e00pld.jpg

what does that mean?

That is the older version of kitchen, but what that means is that it is unable to send keystrokes to your computer. Probably just a glitch, and if you ran again it might pass. Also, if you hover your mouse over the "?" I'm pretty sure it will tell you about it :).

What are you wanting to do with pre-kitchen as you are now rooted ?

well i was reading quickly this morning and i thought you needed this in order to load the rom....now that i look back at it since you quetioned me i see you dont need that for installing fresh...is that correct?

yea Kitchen is just a program that makes rooting and flashing easier. You can use parts of it, like I manually rooted but i use kitchen to load lockscreens and themes.

You can also 'cook' you're own ROMs (add and subtract parts) but can't use the 2.1 update till it's officially released. So if you want 2.1 load Fresh 2.0d It's pretty easy and runs great. Download: Fresh Rom 2.0d | visual voicemail + a2sd + lwp Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero Flash directions are on that page, read it all before you start imo.

edit - yea make sure if you do use Kitchen you update it. http://geekfor.me/news/kitchen-updated-1053/

ok i read the walkthough...is it just put the zip file on the root of the sd card and run it from the care bear screen i installed this morning? :D

how do you wipe the handheld?

and will i need the computer for any of this or can i do it while i'm at work?

If you're rooted I'd just install Fresh 2.0d manually, using Kitchen you can only load Fresh 1.1 or whatever. Not the 2.1 updates.

Boot into recovery

not sure, someone smarter than me might tell you how you can but doing it normal is easy with a PC.

Once you have the signed zip (ROM) loaded onto your SD card, you don't technically need a computer. You just need to be able to boot into recovery (you can find out how to do this w/out using adb in this FAQ section) wipe data and dalvik (also explained in the FAQ Section) then flash the ROM.

ok i installed the new rom Fresh 2.0d and after reboot its been stuck on the HTC screen for about 6 minutes now..i read somewhere that its normal for it to hang there for 15 minutes..what do i do after those 15 minutes? pull the battery?

edit***********
ok after about an hour of sitting there i realized that something was wrong lol...i started to read though some threads and found one where i read that i didnt wipe data..only the dalvik..after wiping both and installing fresh again it worked like a charm...

thanks ccapasso for all your help!!

Sure thing. Glad it worked for you. I thought I mentioned to wipe both data and dalvik (looking back at posts I did) but it is an easy thing to overlook :). Enjoy the ROM :)

***Update***

I updated the tutorial with information on how to install Fresh 2.0d. We were getting a lot of questions regarding how to install 2.1 so this has now been added to the tutorial.

***Update***

Well, you can use the newer version called Fresh Kitchen 1.0.5.3 to "cook" custom 1.5 ROMs but it does not allow you to cook any 2.1 ROMs. Flipz has stated that he wants to wait until the official update is released in order to continue working on his 2.1 ROM.

Otherwise, you can just download the zip of whatever ROM you desire to flash > place it on the root of your sd card > reboot into recovery > and flash the zip :)

EDIT: I should read from the bottom up from now on >_<

Just to sahre with all of you... I updated from Fresh 1.1 to Fresh 2.0d. Everything seems to be working just fine with the exception of my contacts from Google that are Facebook friends. For some reason I am not able to get the pictures of the different contacts/friends from facebook. I'll do a bit of searching on these forums, but so far I am happy with Fresh 2.0d after my upgrade earlier today.

i upgraded to fresh 2.0d yesterday and i had the same issue..i went to one of my contacts and clicked edit, the menu button and link...after that it sync'd all my contacts pictures to their facebook pictures.

After reading your reply, I tried linking a contact from facebook with a google and exchange contact. Only half of my contacts in Facebook would show up and that is why most of my contacts would not have a picture, etc. I was able to fix it by logging off of facebook and logging back in. Then all of my friends/contacts from facebook showed up. I linked one of them, and the rest followed :)

Thank you for the tip.
