[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

thanks. im very computer literate...i just didnt copy that image to the sd card. i didnt see it clearly noted in the tutorial is all. any benefit to deleting those useless sprint apps?? peeps, footprints, nfl, nascar?

That reminds me, I still need to run Kitchen and pull of peeps and a couple of other apps too. Not so much for the space, but I'm tired of looking past them to tap the icon I really want.

Hitman, I ran the audio fix you posted earlier. And though it SEEMS to happen less often, I still lose my audio completely on occasion and have to pull the battery to reset.

Anyone know why that fix didn't work for me? Other than that, the 2.0d seems to be running great...

Here is a great example of why I hesitate to root and ROM!
(sorry to pick on you Kelvin, your post just broke the camel's back!)

Sometimes I can't use the Hero for it's primary intention (as a PHONE) but dang, this XYZ.2 ROM is great!

I truly suspect Sprint is having troubles getting the glitches like these out, and that's why we don't have an official Sprint 2.1 ROM yet. But that's a topic for a different thread.

Not that it helps, but I did the audio fix on tuesday. Before that I had to reboot about 2x a day for the last week because of the audio loss. As of this afternoon, I haven't rebooted since Wednesday morning and have not had audio loss at all. The fix totally worked for me. There are a couple different zips you can flash, depending on the scenario, did you find both and figure out which was closer to your experience?

<EDIT>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=657244&highlight=[FIX]+Audio+Loss
Here is the link to the two different zips for the audio fix

BTW, I figured out the issue. The PC I was on automatically encrypts files, so the Hero couldn't read it. Got home and it was able to work just fine.

OK, now I understand. That file screwed me up too when I rooted. Just go here > xda-developers - View Single Post - [Recovery] CDMA Sprint [07-Mar-2010] RA-heroc-v1.6.2 And scroll down to "Download." Download the 1.6.2 image file and go into your SD card. Delete the 1.5.2 img file, then copy/paste the 1.6.2 img file. Next, finish up with the manual root process. IIRC, that is about step 18 or so in the commands. Double-check and just finish the final few steps in manual. Takes a couple of minutes. Should be good from there or reply with results.

i rooted tonight and deleted some useless sprint apps...everything seems to be working smoothly.
is it safe to delete peeps and how would i? also, what is teeter and how can i delete it if it is safe to do so? thanks

@ccapasso.... thank you thank you thank you for this, I just rooted by hero and running fresh 2.0, it looks great, all I can say to every one wanting to root, it is quite easy, just READ READ READ READ READ, and go back and read one more time, watch the videos and you should be good.... now time to play with 2.1!!!!! Thanks forum

Your questions is answered right in the FAQ section. Look at FAQ 19.

19.How do I remove Sprint "Bloatware"?
a. Many custom ROMs already have several Sprint Apps removed. Some of those you may want back. If you have Fresh 1.1 installed, you can use pre-kitchen to add/remove Sprint apps (yes you can do this even if you manually rooted you phone). If don't have Fresh 1.1 or prefer to do it manually, you can find instructions here and a list of apps that are safe to remove here.

Teeter is a game. You would know that if you tried it out :).

Glad it worked for you :).

Thanks for taking the time to read everything and for taking your time :)

I had this part about my camera problem in another post above, but it may have been unseen since I was talking about something else too. If anyone has experienced this or thinks they have a fix it would be a major help!:

My big problem is the camera. Regardless of whether I use Barcode Scanner or the camera by itself, when I try to back out of the app to my home screen the phone freezes. Same thing if I just press "Home" instead of trying to back out. The buttons won't work at that point so I can't just press "Home" and get back that way. Just a dark screen. Only thing I can do at that point is reboot. Even then I have to press the power button a few times for the power off dialog bar to appear. Then it takes several taps to register, and finally the "Power Off...Yes/Cancel" popup appears and I can turn the phone off and then restart.

I use Barcode Scanner quite a bit, so this is a pita. The camera by itself I may not use every day, but almost. So either way this is a big issue. I have reflashed the ROM (after wiping) twice, rebooted more times than I can count, and I still have this same issue. I tried iMat Scanner in case it was something in Barcode Scanner, but that made no difference. Same problem.

edit: deleted peep.

I just updated using auto-root/fresh 2.1-update2! All went smooth with one exception: All my previously downloaded apps are missing from the market.
Immediately after the install, I went to android market and they were all there. Google Maps had an update available, so I initiated that and once the install was complete, I went back in and all the other apps that were just there had disappeared. I did a power off reset, along with a PRL (60664) and profile update, but previously installed apps are still gone.

Are there any quick fixes for this?

I am trying to root but am unable to download the recovery-ra-heroc-v1.5.2.img the zip files seem to be corrupt. any idea why i keep getting "Error:internal error processing iso image " when i try to unzip. Help please!!:)

Can i just turn the phone off and back on manually, does that still achieve the same thing? I would guess i then proceed to the next step (#15) Thanks guys,

If you are getting permission denied, you need to check 2 things:

1. Make sure your SD card isn't mounted.
2. Make sure USB Debugging is STILL Enabled....

ccapasso, great guide to rooting here. finally took the leap and everything went smooooth

only minor hiccups i ran into that anyone else thinking of rooting might want to be aware of:

1) Vista's a bitch-- the 'adb device' prompt kept telling me "'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command..." This turned out to be because everything i unzipped, Vista was automatically blocking without telling me. Used 7-zip to correct this.

2) The 4shared.com download for recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img has a period (.) missing in the file name between the 5 and 2.

And that was it. Got fresh 2.0d running now, and am absolutely loving it. Definitely faster and less keyboard lag. I'll see how it handles everything today and hope i don't run into the audio bug.

thanks again

Thank you very much for the heads up on the recovery image. I did not realize it was renaming the file. It is named correctly as it is hosted, but when downloaded it gets renamed. I'm guessing because it doesn't know how to handle the file structure as a *. something usually signifies the file name and 4shared might not recognize it in thinking the name is 1.5.2 instead. Not sure why it happens, but fixed now with a note in the tutorial. Thanks again.
