Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

Sometimes. The other way is to set your computer up with adb (see my adb / fastboot FAQ) and use the same command "cat /proc/mtd" in adb shell.
 
Morning all, I have been here before with hope to rooting my desire but failed due to my lack of tech understanding, so im back as i cannot do anything with the phone due to storage and i must get it to function again. I spent around 2 hours last night trying to downgrade to 2.1 after trying unrevoked3 and getting the ''internal error, couldnt find misc'' i have checked the hboot drivers and done a goldcard , do i have to use a separate card for goldcard and keep it only when needed? or can i stay with the one in the phone?
I tried several times to downgrade but it never worked, i maybe not understanding the final instructions it gives me, i have never changed my phone so it is as supplied by o2, to downgrade using the XDA guide do i need a RUU to put on after downgrade before i root?

Can anyone help me? I found another guide but it tells me not to do the downgrade if im on0.93 and slcd display?? can i actually root this phone or am i wasting my time, i really need to get it working again.

If anyone can spare me some time i would be very grateful.

You need to have a RUU to downgrade to and yes it must be one that supports slcd. I think the problem is because its an o2 Rom. Perhaps even the latest unbranded Ruu will fix the issue.

I've never done this myself so maybe Rastaman can advice as he has experience with this.

thanks, Im so new to this, but willing to learn but there is so much information and as you read more it becomes hard to understand what route is correct for my device.

So having an slcd screen doesnt mean i cannot downgrade (get a black screen) just that when i do i need to have an appropriate RUU to place on after? Where do i find these and how do i know which one i will need?

Hi, This is a common issue with o2 build devices and i can advise the following to rectify your problem
its a little more long winded but certainly works and i have done it for a few of my friends so i know its successful
It will mean you will loose all data on the device (this does not include stuff stored on the sdcard)

You could try RUU to 2.29.405.2 using a gold card and rooting with unrevoked 3.21. if you still have problems you can try the below which I KNOW works

Create a goldcard following our guides
Download Teppics downgrade utility (this supports slcd and has a 2.1 rom built in)[HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) - xda-developers
Follow the instructions on that page to downgrade your rom
Root the 2.1 device using unrevoked 3.21 http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.21/reflash_package.exe
download this rom (teppics) and radio [ROM] [20/06] Pre-rooted Stock Froyo (2.29.405.5) [Optional mods] - xda-developers (2.29.405.5)
put both the rom and radio on the sdcard
boot to recovery via voldown + power and select recovery
wipe the device from recovery
flash the rom
flash the radio
reboot
job done

I have unistalled all the files on my pc and started again, i have checked the drivers and created a goldcard which i was advised to partion into 512 ext3 i think to put aps2sd on later. but still got the same error after using unrevoked 3 so as im a noob can you tell me how i do the first part of your advise You could try RUU to 2.29.405.2 using a gold card and rooting with unrevoked 3.21. if this doesnt work i will follow the next guide. although i have already tried to downgrade but couldnt get that to work either, but this may have been me.

if you have partitioned the card you will need to redo it as a gold card as people have found partitioning modifies the bootsector which contains the gold card data. if you still have the img on your pc you can just run the goldcard tool again and load it back on to the card

RUU/pb99img.zip is flashing firmware to the device.
using the 2.29.405.5 PB99IMG.zip will flash your device to a later version of htc firmware which doesnt have this issue (not guaranteed to fix this one but could and its the easiest option)
all you have to do is put the file on the root of your sdcard, boot to bootloader (voldown + power) and accept the prompts

I went through all the steps of the downgrade but i reckon i didnt understand the last bit where it said
Wait for boot screen press power to select bootloader option wait for recovery image to be located + checked. Press vol up to start update.

For me this was not understandable as i had not got any image to load and so i just rebooted the phone and it was still untouched.

I will have a go at your steps above. once i have done those do i then just use the unrevoked3 to root as before.

thanks, put the file on the root, do i have to unzip first? ran it as directed and only thing was some green writing (to quick to read) and then back to hboot???

maybe i have to unzip it? i also notice i have a file on the card already showing PB99IMG should i delete this first?

Update cannot unzip so deleted and retried, last line of green writing says no image or wrong image. Do i take it this is not an option ? wow im amazed at how hard this is for me as others have rooted in a breeze.

I have the download but when i try to unzip i just get error 'central directory not found'

Sorry i missed this comment, i have a file called this already but its dated 2010 ? I have never done anything to the phone before and i have had it since new.

So should i delete this file and add the new one to the root?
