Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

Thats the beauty of rooting. The phone's life span is so much longer than if you had say a blackberry or iphone or even an unrooted desire.

Yeah was worried the phone was going to start getting boring over the last few months of the contract. But now with the option of Custom ROMS I feel I could probably keep the phone for another few years :D Thanks so much for the help!

start trying out custom launchers and customising them to your taste with image work and icons. there are some amazing results to be had

1)check this http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/339974-other-than-cm7-any-other-good-roms.html

3)no
4) if you do nandroid backup, you can revert back but as rooted.
you need RUU if you want your phone as when bought

Thanks for the help,

I have one more doubt

My recovery is on Amon RA 2.0.1 due to pvt4 40000 device (HTC Desire GSM Middle East Version).
So is it advisable to install the ROM's below with Amon RA 2.0.1 / pvt4 40000 device? I would like to try one by one copying the related ROM to SD card directly and run it from recovery

1) CyanogenMOD CM7 7.0.3
2) Gingervillain 2.4
3) Redux v1.2
4) Oxygen 2.1.3

Thanks in advance :)

yes boot into recovery manually (Amon RA) to flash the roms.

DO NOT use ROM manager. Infact, even if you have erase 20000, do not use rom manager.

Yes I am done with "update-oxygen-2.1.3-signed" . Its working fine as of now. Thanks for the help from such a great forum

Really good guide, thanks. Rooted successfully :)

I made some notes as I went along of steps I thought were useful that weren't covered:

*Make a gold card
*When downloading HTC Sync, there's two versions, one called 'NAM'. I believe this is the North American Market version. I used the other one.
*Uninstall ATK
*Turn off WiFi
*Enable installation of non-Market apps (although somewhere else I saw it say disable!)
*USB charge only
*Android 1.0 will appear not to install properly on XP, that's ok
*If you forced all apps to SDCARD set "pm setInstallLocation 2"
*Before running unrevoked, make space on your phone

Hiya, thanks for the notes :)

Some of this is in the rooting FAQ, which this guide suggests is read first. However the non market apps one is a good point., I have never tried to root using unrevoked without that, but it makes sense it could cause trouble

i rooted my pvt4 40,000 with 3.3 which was succesful and i now have superuser and recovery (cwm) but i cannot do a nandroid back up!
says E:cant find MISC and other similar.
having read i should of used 3.21 is this the reason why?
if not as the root is on there why won't nandroid back up?

no its not. its that with a pvt40000 device you should use amonRA 2.0.1 which is listed on this guide

if you run the flash package again without connecting the device, select custom and choose amonRA 2.0.1 then connect device you will have it working nice

The only "working" cm with 40,000 is the one that comes with alpharev s-off which unfortunately is very poor. So no, afraid not

It's the size of the data block that is written to the nand chip.

Cwm is designed to work with the 20,000 so its writing half the size of the block for 40,000 so its not possible.

It's like 2 sweets for a penny, but you can't physically buy 1 sweet for half a penny

I'm looking to do this and have a couple of questions.

This is my phone, which I've been told should be OK !!
Code:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001 MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27

Does unrevoked wipe any date on phone or SD card ?
If I go with CM7 or GingerVillian will I need S-Off ??

Thanks :)

You don't need s-off to flash roms, nope. It doesn't wipe any data.

Before you go through the guide, Please read the FAQ linked in the first post

Rooted fine :D
Bit nervous their !!

I plan to format and repartition my SD Card to use "App2sd", currently it's my GoldCard, will doing this cause me any issues if I stay with my rooted stock Rom ??

Which Rom would you recommend ? I had been thinking about GingerVillian or CM7.. Any issues with GPS ?

Thanks :)

Well.you need a Rom with init.d support for a2sd+ so you'll need to flash a custom. The.partition itself won't cause issues on rooted stock but it will break the gold card so you'll have to re upload your image

Is the goldcard actually needed ?

would it be needed if I restore my nandroid backup of the debranded stock rom ?

Thanks :)
