Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

Thanks again for your help :)

Can I use GParted to resize my 8GB SC Card ? to have a 1.5GB EXT3 Partition.

Resize current FAT32 partition and then create 1 x 1.5GB EXT3 Partition
( not delete all partitions and create from new )

Will doing it this way keep the card as my Gold Card ?

No it wont, because you're still adding an extra partition, which re-writes the boot sector of the sd card. This is also where the gold image is. But you can just use the goldcard tool to re-ipload your goldcaard image back to the card. Its not a big deal. Its not the same as remaking the entire card.

OK.
Last couple of questions for tonight..

How will I know if the GoldCard is working OK ? Will the current ROM I have not boot ??

Will I need to update my radio to use either CM7 or GingerVillian (or similar ?)

This is what I have currently :
BaseBand: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build: 2.29.405.2 CL263770 release-keys
Software: 2.29.405
.

Thanks yet again :)

Gold card: you'll never really know until you need it. You can make it with a card reader so if it doesn't work just make sure you.have one available

Radio: no. That one was fine for me

Hello everybody! I am new at rooting and on this forum, but read a lot about this. This week-end I have some spare time, and I want to root my phone. I have read the whole "how-to's" here and on other forums, but a lot o information is different in different places.

First of all before you start to root and do the other things, what you have to do? From what I read you need to create a Golden Card to be used later if you want to reflash the stock ROM. I want to mention that I used the "SIM Unlock" utility provided by sieempi, so I guess this won't affect the creation of a Gold Card.

After the creation of the Gold Card I want to find my original ROM RUU, which is, as I can take from the settings from my phone, RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed,
since Baseband Version: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 and Software number is 2.10.405.2 on my phone. I want to mention that my phone is bought from Vodafone ROMANIA, but didn't come branded in any way. (it only had an application on the Home Screen but after I deleted there was in fact no apk installed) So after I flash this ROM I should be as good as stock, and probably good for a guaranty check.

The third is to start the actual procedure of rooting.

I want to know if there must be done something else before I start to root my phone.

Thank you for your help.

All RUU's are available here http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo

You need ones that have .405. in the same part of the sequence as you mentioned above. .405. RUU's are World Wide English unbranded RUU's and do not need a gold card to flash.

The latest version is 2.29.405.5. Ensure you get the entire RUU NOT the OTA's

Usually it is good practice to make a gold card incase these wont work, then you can flash branded RUU's that may be your only recovery option.

You must follow this guide to the letter. This guide is the most up to date one I am aware of and we keep it up to date with relevant information. This guide includes checks you need to do to ascertain which Recovery version you need to use on PVT4 devices, where many others do not.

There is a rooting FAQ that is a companion to this guide, linked in the first post. I also recommend that you read that.

Hope this helps.

So the one I have already download-ed is not good? Also isn't it actually need to have my Baseband Version, or it can be a different one? Also I have to take the latest version 2.29.405.5? I thought that the RUU had to have the exactly numbers my phone has to be the actual stock ROM?

I am a bit confused now, but if you say that I have to grab the final one the I'll take that one.

I have also read the FAQ section. I'll make the Golden Card as a back-up safe option. I have the latest PVT4, but with 20,000, and as I read this is safe with CWR.

Thanks.

you HAVE to have x.xx.405.x

You can download any .405 as long as it is the same version as yours or newer. The .405. never changes on your phone. With every OTA update, the other numbers get bigger.

Your phone should be 2.29.405.5 if you're up to date. 2.10.405.2 is an older version so if you did check for updates now, it should find an up to date OTA to download.

baseband is just radio. With OTA updates, often the radio is updated. You dont have to stick with the version in your software version. As long as its one bundled in to a 405 RUU

Very useful post. I didn't know that. Thank you. Ok, the I will look for the newest version available and download it.

Also is the version of CWR that comes with unrEVOked the latest version available? I think I saw on some tread that the version changed.... If this is true can I download the latest version and select it in unrEVOked from File->Custom Recovery?

I will update after I make my Gold Card. Also which is the easiest way to make one? If remember correctly someone said that there was an app for Android that would verify if your Gold Card is valid or not?

Thank you for your help.

Unrevoked uses 2.5.0.7 which is the last official version. There are many unofficial versions that followed, but in my mind 2.5.0.7 is far superior, even if the newer versions add functionality.

I still don't understand one thing. I saw a tutorial on how to make a gold card, but it says I should format the card before doing the adb commands. Is this needed to be done??

Also since the gold card ain't unique per phone couldn't I get the .img file I am supposed to, and write it to the card when I need it?

As I can understand I just need to make that .img file, and I can make the gold card only when I need it. Is this correct?

The most important questions are:

1) Do I have to format my card before running the adb command?
2) Is the code actually unique per phone / per MicroSD card?
3) Can I only make the .img file and write it to the card when I need it?
4) Do I need the Gold Card to install custom ROM's/S-OFF the phone/to flash any kind of .zip files/anything else beside flashing a Branded RUU?

Thank you for your reply and time.

L.E.: As I can see there is an Windows Application that can make the gold card.

If you're using the guide from the rooting FAQ I Wrote, you wont be using ADB. Just follow those instructions.

The goldcard is not phone specific but it is card specific so the .img will onyl work on that card. You just upload it to the card. Why bother not doing that?

The goldcard allows you to use an RUU that is not from your version.

Ok. Thank you so much.

One last question about this gold card and I'm over (actually make it three):

1) If I copy the files to the PC and then Format, and the copy the files back will all my applications (that are on the card) still work, or do I have to use an application designed for this?
2) Is the gold card required when I install the RUU that we discussed about?
3) After I root my phone and buy a new card can I make that one also an Gold Card, even if my phone is rooted?

1) Apps moved to sd using "Move to sd" are in .android_secure on the sd card. On the PC just ensure you can see hidden folders too.

2) No

3) You can but you need to go through the entire process again. If you have a second card, just leave the first card as gold and do what you want with the second.

Thank you SUroot, a very useful guide.
I managed to root without to much trouble :)
I have some issues but I'll ask for help separately since they appeared later.
Thanks again.

Everything is ROOT now. The next step is S-OFF, but there is time till then. I have a lot of stuffs to do and explore now :D

Thank you for your help.

Hello Guys, I'm new to this "rooting" stuff and I want to make sure that I got this right.

My Desire is as follows:
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.93.0001
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL - SYNW0101
RADIO 5.11.05.27

In software information it says 2.29.405.5 so I assume this is not the Arab build.

"cat /proc/mtd" says that erasesize is 00020000.

Can somebody confirm that I can use the "simple path" provided in this tutorial (use Unrevoked 3.21 to root my phone and install ClockworkMod recovery)?

Thanks in advance :)

What a bummer.. :(
I finally gathered enough courage to Root, and I got the dreaded "Backup CID is missing" error.

My unit is an unlocked 3UK Desire running 2.2.

Bootloader stuff:
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.14

I saw in the FAQ that I'll have to go through the downgrade process and run an older version of unrevoked. Time to read up again...

@eric_son,
Don't forget to check also the Gold card section.

I already made a Gold Card using the steps outlined in the Gold Card section.
I also tried the rooting steps, with a Gold Card SD inserted and with a non-Gold Card SD. Both result in the same Missing CID error.

Also made sure that WiFi is off.

Did I miss anything?

Thanks!

Eric

Goldcard wont fix this issue. You will be best downgrading.

Yep...sure looks like it.

I caught a glimpse at the XDA forum saying that I should be okay running the Unrevoked3 v3.2 if and only if my error is "Backup CID is missing" and no other "misc" error.

But the downgrade process seems safer.

I'll take some time do some backups, etc. before I proceed further.

Thanks again.

I recommend downloading titanium backup. Its a root app for backing up all apps and data.

Then download visionary+ 19/Nov r14: VISIONary + one click root - Android @ MoDaCo and apply temp root. Now you should be able to run a titanium backup.

If you're going for a standard rooted sense rom, you can probably restore everything you backed up.

Otherwise, just missing apps with data, ensuring you leave all the HTC and system apps out.

Also, find an app to backup sms, call logs, contacts if needed.

OK - getting close to plucking up the courage now. And done all the research bits I need to do. Couple of quick questions.

I've got a PVT3 build with erase size of 20,000 so I know I don't NEED AmonRA recovery but SUroot says you can do it if you want. So is AmonRA better than ClockworkMod? Does it give me anything else? Looking through the forums and checking all you top guys sigs I see that most of you have AmonRA. Is it better to do it this way?

Second, in theory I don't need the GoldCard in the phone to make custom ROMS work but it appears that it does help in some aspects. Should I wait to make a Gold Card on a bigger SD or can I get away with doing it on the one it came with? Can you make any sd card Gold or am I right in thinking that you can only do it once?

Ta Guys. Finding all this really helpful and now know a load more!
