Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

I got my phone from a local importer who brought (unofficial) October last year.
It was an unlocked 3UK unit running Eclair. I was even able to do an OTA to Froyo.

Anyway, is there any way to test if the unit is indeed S-OFFed prior to flashing a ROM that requires S-OFF?
 
No roms require s-off to actually be flashed.

Easiest test is to see if you can use titanium backup to delete a system app. Then reboot to see if the app is still there.

I just uninstalled "3-Favourites" and "3" using Titanium.
They were gone, even after rebooting.
So I guess I really am S-OFF'ed?

Anyway, it's 20mins to midnight and I think I need to call it a day.

EDIT: ignore me im a little tired

if it doesnt show the pink alpharev sign at the top its s-off but the engineering commands are missing
 
This method is for the desire. Part of the problem is the bootloader but not being familiar with your device, we can't say for sure. We havent even got 2.3 yet. Have you tried the evo forum?

Fail!!!

In UnrEVOked, go to File > Custom recovery

File, Custom recovery is greyed out

Then the phone reboots and error on unrevoked - Internal error:failed to unlock NAND flash?

Any ideas ?
 
You're doing file>custom recovery before connecting device?

Do you want to use another recovery for a reason?

Misread it. Tried again and it automatically did it. How do i know it worked ?

Now i have the superuser icon and have stopped sweating. Is the dangerous part over now ?

Can i remove the goldcard and put my proper card back in and save the goldcard for a rainy day ?

You only need the gold card to return to stock. Not even needed to root.
 
Got rooted put cyanogen yipee

I like it but no android market (so no facebook, ebay etc) Gmail missing too?

Is this normal ?

You need to flash Gaaps (Google Apps) zip too.
Get it in CM7 topic at XDA or from Dropbox in out FAQ.

Im new to this and getting a bit confused. Couple of questions I have.

Does rooting the phone format all memory. Is back up needed prior to rooting?

My phone has the following software. Will it root trouble free?

I have a silly question: SUroot mentioned in a post that laptop USB ports aren't suitable for rooting because they are underpowered. Does this mean that I won't be able to root a phone using a laptop? What are the chances of me succeeding if I do try? Or do I really need a desktop PC to get the job done? I don't have access to a PC and I might buy a Desire soon. That's what got me wondering...

"some" laptop ports are underpowered
you can still try different ports and make sure the laptop is connected to mains power in order for it not to use powersave mode

youll know if its underpowered as it just wont work
