Root Guide to Rooting Without a Computer

Did you have usb debugging turned on? This is the most common mistake. Make sure it is checked, and try again. Sometimes it tasks a few tries.

Yes, I have it turned on -- but not connected to a computer. The instructions didn't say to do so, but having to have USB debugging on at least implies that there should be a computer involved. But yeah, the title of the thread is "rooting without a computer." So.

Just want to make sure that I should do this without a computer :D

Did you remember my advice on how picky the Gingerbreak .apk can be towards SD cards. Be patient. Be careful. Be thinking. Gingerbreak will not mess up your phone. I have a paper weight because I messed up using SuperOneClick. Take your time and go thru the checklist that I gave you in the last post of your thread:Support freeing space. It will work. Try to find the stock 2g SD card, reformat in your phone then download the apk and try again. Also you have to power off and power on your phone after each failed attempt(this is called rebooting). If it does not work on the next try after reformatting,Reboot and try again(if it doesn't work after 12min,pull battery(this will be the same as rebooting)and install battery, power on,and try again. If for some reason it doesn't work on the third attempt, Reformat the SD card by inserting it in your PC. go to start/computer/right click on SD card a window will pop up. select format. another window will pop up. Select restore device defaults, then select start. when it's done put the card back in your phone and start over. remember to reboot at each failed attempt. This will not mess up your phone but it will eventually work. It worked for me after I reformated using my PC.

okay, I forgot the "gingerbreak is picky " part. My bad.

The 2g card I'll have to look for tomorrow.

So what I'm hearing from you is that I should keep hammering on GingerBreak and not use SuperOneClick at all, right?

At any rate, I'll keep at it. Thanks for the additional advice.

If you really want to give SuperOneClick a try I can give you a link to that tomorrow(I got to get to sleep. It's to easy to make errors in the command line, unless you know where to put the spaces. But it is doable, It's just that Gingerbreak won't mess up your phone if you don't get it right the first time. Try the SD card thing first, then get back with me in the evening after 8:30 my time if you still want to do the SuperOneClick method(I'm sure you will be Rooted before then)

heh, no I don't particularly want to try SOC -- I want root, I don't want it to go away should I have to reboot my phone (and that happens when I drop it and the battery pops out. Happens a little too often for my comfort.)

I'll try the SD card thing tomorrow, and I'll keep you updated.

You can use SuperOneclick to establish a Shell Root with the "V",then the rest of the way you have to use command lines to establish a full Root. It's doable, just a little more risk involved. Got to get to sleep

I might want to have those instructions in my toolbox just in case I can't get GingerBreak to work. I have a low tolerance for frustration :) )

You were suggesting I find the stock 2G card and put thought in -- will all the apps and whatnot I have on the 4G card I have now work find after I put that one back in? That is, will the phone just find them all again, or will I have to do something special?

You just need to use the stock 2g card to run the Gingerbreak exploit, and install a recovery. Once you do that you can re-install the 4G card.

Is this a working method for other phones such as the galaxy's? I have no access to a computer,so I am hoping this will work!

You might want to check first and see if the Gingerbreak .apk is compatible with your phone. Then see what procedure for flashing a recovery is best for your phone. Last but not least, which is the best recovery for your phone. For all the answers to the above questions try looking in the sub-forum that is best for your phone. This way you don't accidentally brick your phone. I hope this has been of some help.

I am not sure I can find the stock 2g card. I found the ADAPTER that came in the box, but the microSD card wasn't in it. I might have recycled it accidentlly, I don't know.

If I keep hammering on GingerBreak -- if I keep activating it and rebooting -- will it eventually work?

If not, do you have any other ideas? Maybe use SOC and the later commands?

I would only give it two more try's with GingerBreak. Try moving everything out of your SD card into a new folder on your PC. Then reformat the SD card in the phone. Then download the zip file from the tutorial and go thru the steps one more time. Remember to have USB debugging turned on. Your not using your PC,but you have to have it on for the exploit to work. If it does not work after 12min,pull battery and try one more time. If you get an error then it does not like your SD card and you will have to use SuperOneClick. I will be rounding up all things for use of SuperOneClick just in case.

I got GingerBreak to work! Yay :) I cleared the data for it, ran it one more time and it worked great. Phew.

I am now at step 4; typing in the mount command. I did that and got a usage error -- the unix system was telling me that I was using the mount command improperly. I went and verified that I typed everything in correctly 3 times and could not find any errors.

Should there be a space between the dash and the 'yaffs2' part?

What's next, then? I installed BusyBox, I have the Superuser app on there ... now I am stalled whilst typing in the first mount command.

And yes, I typed in 'su' first and got the superuser hash prompt :)

OK not a problem. I had the same trouble with that as well. Try: su
(return)(there should be an su here) mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /system /system(return)(there should be an su here) then follow the rest of the command lines

If the chmod 755 command for the flash_image doesn't work then download Super Manager from the market. Open it up and go to settings. Make sure Enable ROOT function box is checked. Then go to select Busybox file. Select where you have Busybox installed. Scroll down to Show Hidden Files and make sure that's checked. Hit the backbutton and go to File explorer. Select: Back up level folder twice.scroll down to system and select. when you do a window will pop up select R/W. scroll down to bin and select. scroll down until you see the flash image that you installed and select it(it will have the date of install next to it). go to the tool bar and scroll right to left until you see a icon with three red 7's.click on it a window will pop up make sure only : Owner read, write, execute are checked ;Group read, execute are the only one's checked ;Other read, execute are the only one's checked. Then Hit OK...Exit super manager and go back to the emulater and type su(return) ,finish the last two lines of command, then you should be in the recovery were you can make a backup. Scoll using the up/down volume, select using the home key(if you hit home key and the screen goes blank hit home again and use the menu key instead). I've got to go help a friend will be back in an hour. If you are still having problems someone might help before I get back.

the syntax for the mount command is somehow flawed. I tried the new command you gave me and got the same error message.

I tried getting the man page for the command but it doesn't exist on the phone ... don't know what the exact name/version of the OS is so I can't look it up.

Nyargh. Maybe I should go use the Super Manager?

what does BusyBox do? I don't have a BusyBox app; I only have the installer.

That line always confuses people! Here it is with red dashes in place of the spaces:

mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/system_/system

That's a total of 6 spaces

it worked that time. not sure what I did different, but no error... thanks!

edit: okay it all worked -- finally! Thanks to all of you for your invaluable help.

But ... NOW WHAT? You say to install ROMS only for the Optimus V --cool, where can I find those? How do I install them? And how can I move apps off of phone storage onto the SD card, the ones that were 'stuck' on there before? That's one of the main reasons I wanted to root my phone anyway ... the ROMs and such are all gravy, as I'm happy enough with the stock ROM and LauncherPro.

also -- what is BusyBox FOR, and do I need to keep it around? Even with it installed on the phone I seem to have more space already (yay!) but if there's no reason to keep it ....

thanks again,.

I'm sorry I forgot to put in where the spaces specifically go. JerryScript saves the day again. If you really want some space for apps and be able to safely overclock so you can play games(Angry Birds is a whole lot smoother and faster),and make browsing faster, Try the Bumblebee ROM. If you just want a lot of app space, try Harmonia. All of wich can be found here [Reference Guide] Optimus V Modding (READ THIS TO GET STARTED) - Android Forums. Make sure you make a backup in recovery before you do anything else to your phone. Even if you never chang your ROM. Just in case you accidentally delete something you weren't supposed to. for a list of the peinstalled apps that you can remove(never remove a google framework services app) go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-list-bloatware-lg-optimus-v.html#post2494348 instructions for safely installing the ROM's go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-custom-kernel-rom-change-boot-animation.html and start on step #17 any questions on installing a ROM ask there. You can use App2SD for the easy stuff. Titanium Backup for the hard stuff, plus you can Backup all your apps with it if you decide to change your ROM(Harmonia 1.3 will totally amaze you with the amount of app space) that way all you have to do is download it from the market once in the new ROM and reinstall you apps a whole lot quicker(just don't ever reinstall a system app from Titanium Backup). Busybox has to stay where it is. It has the necessary binaries for doing things when rooted. Also leave su where it is. I hope this helped. Sorry for not being specific about where the spaces went in the command line.

To elaborate (well not really) on what Andy said about busybox: it just sits there and does its thing behind the scenes. You don't 'do' anything with it, or anything like that. Just leave it where it's at. I did uninstall the busybox installer app tho-you shouldn't need it, once busybox is installed (i don't think, anyways-you guys feel free to correct me)

hello i just rooted my phone using this method and was wondering if i can delete the root files. i know it says i can uninstall gingerbread but i just wanted to make sure

ok now i have a problem. i installed link2sd. it said i dont have a second partition on my memory card. so now i cant move some apps i wanted to move onto my sd. not any of the stock apps just ones that normally are phone only. the problem might have come about when i copied a backup of my card i had on my comp back onto the card.

Yes you can delete the Gingerbreak.apk app on your phone.

For a more comprehensive tutorial on link2sd go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/364833-link2sd-you-tutorial.html#post2886854 If you have any questions on this subject this is this best place to ask them.

andy, you beat me to it. I was about to answer the exact same things you did :)

Did you ever answer me about the Harmonia ROM patch? What should I do with that?

And I've been hearing a lot about MIUI ROM -- can you say anything about that?

If you have a couple of reboots on Harmonia then go to recovery and wipe cache partition, and dalvik cache. Then go to install zip from sd card, then go to select zip from sd card, scroll up to get to bottom quicker. Select the patch zip that you put on the root of your sd card. After it installs reboot system.

I've heard of it, but will wait till it gets ported over to the "V" and the bugs worked out.

just wanted to say thanks to the original poster. worked easy and was a charm. kinda makes me wanna learn android now. rooted the phone and uninstalled the bloatware apps. will wait on a rom till tomorrow. lol
