Root Guide to Rooting Without a Computer

also just read this on the android central gingerbreak thread, [something about having the USB cable plugged in]
I ran GingerBreak three times without success... then I connected my Optimus V to my MacBook Pro with a USB cable and tried again, and this time it worked!

Link2SD, here I come. (Now let's hope I can successfully partition my card using my Mac.)

So far so good. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a backup of the SD card, I was able to use Apple's normal Disk Utility to partition the SD card, and then I used CCC to put the files back. After disconnecting the phone from my laptop, the status bar said "damaged SD card" or something, but it was fine after a reboot.

Hey, Adam97202. This thread is about/for Guide to rooting without a computer. Maybe you could put future posts about Link2SD stuff in that thread.

Thanks

I have been trying to use ginger break with no luck.

I have unknown sources checked, and usb debugging.

I copied Gingerbreak INTO a folder on my sd card. Is that correct or does it need to be at the root level??? however the first time I ran it from the file manager, it installedthe app. I know you may have to run it multiple times, so Do you just run the app or do you have go through and install it via file mager every time?

Also, My ultimate goal is to use link2sd. Can I just do that once I am rooted or do I still have to install a custom rom?

I have froyo 2.2.2 will it work on this???? I have seen reports that say this version can't be rooted?

I also have software VM670ZV9 THIS IS VERY NEW.

Also,

When I run it multiple times do i need to do it connectively? or can I do it throughout the dat as I get time?

Anyway thanks for the patience, as I am an Android Noobie.

Zv9 can't be rooted with gingerbreak. Right now the only way to root zv9 OV's is the Gordita exploit. If you have access to a pc, check my zv9 guide for the download link.

How did you connect to macbook pro and Run, If you have it connected to a computer? the card is mounted on the computer and not on the phone, so the software can't run?

Did you just have it plugged into the computer? Was the card mounted on the mac desktop which means you turned on USB storage?

I was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm following these instructions, but I'm stuck on step four. I never got any menu like that, and I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what I've done wrong.

I have an LG Optimus V.

After I do everything in the Terminal Emulator in step 3 (I use the IHOrecovery.img because I figured I'd eventually use this BACKside) and after I hit return on the last line, the phone just reboots like normal.

I got Root Checker and checked and it says I'm Rooted.

Try shutting down completely, then power on while holding home+volume down+power until you see the LG logo, then let go. That should get you into recovery.

I held them all until the LG logo showed up, but it still just powers up like normal. Do I have to put everything back in through the terminal emulator?

This is my first time doing any of this rooting stuff, so I'm very unfamiliar with all of this...

Just to be sure, do I have to do everything past step 3? I can't get the recovery menu to work for the life of me...

Sometimes it can be stubborn, try opening the terminal emulator and using these commands:
su
reboot recovery

If that doesn't work, repeat step 3.

Sorry my response time is slow, I'm taking care of a four month old and he comes first....

Don't worry about it. The child definitely comes before people on the internet. :P

Okay, I'll try that. Once it's turned off, should I hold down all of the buttons?

Alright. I repeated all of Step 3. After hitting enter on the last line of what I'm supposed to write, it reboots and goes to the LG screen. Then it goes black for a bit, shows the LG screen again, and boots normally.

I don't know what to do any more...

Alright. I got that to work. The only thing I can think that was that I was doing something wrong with the recovery line of Step 3. Thank you so much.

Excellent. I'm doing step 5 and making the backup. Once it's done, should I move the backup to my computer?

Once everything's done, should I go to the topic by JerryScript for getting a ROM? Using the instructions listed under "---Installing from another ROM"?

Alright, I'll follow those directions. And I'm sorry if this is the wrong topic, but I'm hoping I can get an answer: What does it mean when it says to flash things? And how can I get rid of the garbage apps that were pre-loaded on the phone I don't want, or move things like Twitter and Facebook to the SD card.
