Root HELP: Bought EVO 4G on eBay. "USB Device Not Recognized"

ferrell

Lurker
I recently purchased a used EVO 4G from eBay to replace one that met with a watery grave. I was able to activate the phone with no problems. The ROM looks like stock, or something close to it...

Android Version
2.3.5

Baseband version
2.15.00.12.19

Kernal version
2.6.35.10-g4b48446
htc-kernel@and18-2#1
Wed Dec 21 16:37:11 CST 2011

Build number
4.67.651.3 CL239674 release-keys

The phone is still rooted, however...

My problem is that I cannot get any of my PCs to recognize the phone. With a USB cable connected, the phone will charge, but windows gives me a "USB Device Not Recognized" error. (imgur: the simple image sharer). This is with the phone in "Disk drive" mode. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers to no avail. I even tried HTC Sync (with the phone in sync mode) and I get a big image that says that it cannot find the phone.

At this point, I'm running out of things to try (different USB cables, reformatting MicroSD card, different computers, etc...), and I'm not sure where to turn next. Thanks. :)

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!

well you can try this fix:
[ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working - xda-developers, since you are rooted.

Might be a silly question but what are you trying to accomplish. Is there something you are trying to transfer from your phone to your computer or vice versa? To be honest, if you are wanting to stay rooted, there's really no reason to hook the phone up via usb. In my humble opinion, using sdcard reader would be easier, plus you can download virtually any kernel, rom, theme..... to the phone directly and then use a file explorer to navigate files where needed. I've been rooted for 2 years and other than the initial rooting process or running of a ruu, I never connect my phone via usb

Thank you all for your input. I will try what ocnbrze suggested when I get home from work tonight (My laptop at home has the card reader), and I will report back!

What driver did you install (source)?
I downloaded 3.0.0.007 from a link on the XDA-Developers forums (cannot find the exact link now). I also downloaded the HTC Sync from HTC.

And you DID reformat the SD card?
Yep! :)

Might be a silly question but what are you trying to accomplish...
I've owned an EVO since they came out, and have had mine rooted as soon as this was possible. I've never had a problem like this, however. Anyway, as ocnbrze implied, it's convenient to be able to transfer gigabytes worth of data over USB rater than having to remove the case, remove the back cover, remove the battery, try to remove the SDcard with my big fat fingers, transfer the card to my card reader, etc... Plus, I want to ensure that there is not truly something wrong with the hardware of this phone before I call it "mine". If there truly is a hardware issue that the seller did not disclose, I want the option of sending it back.

I use Airdroid to do most of my transfering. I do hook up via usb on an occasion but thats more or less when I forgot to put the ROM on I'm going to flash "YES IT HAPPENS" and since I'm in recovery its just easier.

Just floating by here and briefly checked out that app...looks promising. Lots of downloads and very little complaints. Is it kinda like cloud storage? I briefly looked at it, and it looks cool. No problems with bad downloads etc? Thanks for the tip!:D

Edit: Just read some more and watched video of it. Ima gonna try it! It looks easy..cool

It wirelessly transfers files over your WiFi connection if its the app I'm thinking of. Used to use an app like it when I had my iPod touch like 5 years ago

/embarrassed

I'll go back into my hole now :p

OK. Trying this, but hit a wall right away. I've copied both files to the MicroSD card, and downloaded "Android Terminal Emulator" from the market. I open this app and type the first line...

su

I then get "Permission denied". I do not get a prompt from superuser. The ROM that was installed on the phone has superuser on it. I even tried downloading the latest copy of superuser, but still cannot get this to work.

EDIT: I just downloaded "Root Checker" to see if everything was kosher. Surprise, surprise, I get a "Sorry, this device does not have proper root access."

Would it be worth a shot to unroot, then start from scratch at this point?

before unrooting the device to reroot we should try a few things first. Power down the phone (make sure its off and not on sleep mode) power back on holding the down volume button and the power key until your hboot screen comes up.(alternatively if you have quick reboot you could just reboot to recovery) Choose Recovery after it goes through the update screen. In recovery (Amon RA instructions only) Scroll down to wipe. Tap powerbutton to enter into wipe and find cache and dalvic and delete both of those. Then Reboot the phone. Boot may take a bit longer than usual this is fine as the dalvic cache is being rebuilt. Once booted go to TE and type SU again and see if the superuser gives you an option to save the app TE as a trusted program. choose yes and then carry on. If it does not then you will need to tap menu>settings>applications>Manage Applications scroll down to TE and remove data then scroll down to superuser and again remove data. This should allow SU to popup when you type the command in TE.

OK. Before you had responded, I tried going into recovery, and saw that there was no recovery. (Just a screen with a red triangle), so I ended up installing Clockwork via an PC36IMG.zip file. That worked, and I did clear cache and dalvic. Root checker came back positive, and I was able to gain superuser access. I then followed the steps as described in the fix, but this did not fix anything. (Windows still says "Unrecognized device" when I connect). I then proceeded to install another ROM, thinking this might clear things up. Nope again.

I see that the link with the fix mentions that reinstalling the radio may clear things up, and this is my next step.

My biggest fear is that there is something really wrong with the phone (hardware not software), and if I go back to stock I'll have the same error and never be able to root again. (NOTE: This is mere speculation, and don't have enough experience to have ever run into that scenario). Anyway, I really appreciate all of your help so far. Hopefully the radio refresh will give me something. Do you think there is any chance of still being locked out after fully reverting to stock? Have you ever heard of this? Thanks.

I originally posted this but deleted it thinking there were better ideas but reading thru these posts, thought I'd suggest it, how about a different sd card??

That was one of my first thoughts as well.

Uninstall & reinstall the drivers- you've done that
Repartition the SD card - - you've done that
Try a different usb cable- ??
Try a different SD card - ??
Try a different computer- ??

If you can change the battery,I was just starting that all is not lost but not having a fully functional replacement for a phone that's 2 years old without a single defect will be hard.
