Root Help stuck in bootloader

HeresOtis

Newbie
My EVO 4G is stuck in bootloader. I don't know what the previous state of the phone is because I received it from a friend. The phone boots straight to fastboot. I then go to bootloader/recovery, which takes me to the htc evo 4g splash, then shuts off and turns back on to fastboot. So it's a repeated process. I had put unlocked the bootloader with HTCDev and put Amon recovery on it, but now I can't even go to recovery. I tried going back to stock ruu but the exe always freezes at one part. And it says too many links when it tries to read the phones rom image. What other steps can I do to get a rom back on it and then to eventually root the phone?

So you cannot access recovery thru the bootloader screen here?

I used to when I freshly flash Amon. But now I can't. It takes me to HTC EVO 4G splash screen for a few seconds, then the phone reboots back to bootloader.

I see, trying to remember what options there are in bootloader.
Is there an option to clear storage?
And when you said something about too many links and cannot be read, I wonder if you have too many PC36IMG files on your sd card. I wonder if that is what you are talking about because depending on your method of Amon Ra install, one of those files is named PC36IMG, and if you put another file named that without deleting the first, you might get that "too many links" message.
Problem is, figuring out which one to delete......if that's the issue there. Edit: perhaps delete both at this point
Now, Maybe try the option to clear storage.?
btw...Welcome to the forums!!!:p

The too many links error was from using the RUU exe on the computer while the phone is connected to it. I just cleared the storage and the same is happening.
Also, the RUU can't detect my rom image.

Hmmm, do you know how to use adb?
I know there is a way thru this, trust me but I am unfamiliar with what to do next, but do not fear my friend, there are other people here who will read your issue and post a solution, believe me there are many helpful people here.
So don't fret, stick around and if I think of something, I will post back.
I'll be online for a few more hours k?
:o

I unlocked the bootloader again with HTCdev. I also flashed Amon recovery again, but I could only get to the recovery when the phone is connected through USB. I also can't flash superuse from the sd card - the error is get is E:Can't mount /sdcard. I think I'm getting this error because I'm connected through USB while in recovery.

This the method I'm trying to follow: [GUIDE] How to achieve S-OFF after unlocking 2.18 HBOOT with HTCDev.com - No More Watermark! :)
I'm trying to complete step 4 but I get the sdcard error.

wait i re-read this. you can get to recovery but only when you are connected?

How would I reflash a rom?

ok lets try this then:
1.download this file:MikG 3.11 fullwipe. this is mikg which is a great rom and soooo much better then stock.

2.go into recovery and make sure that it is hooked up via usb.

3.move the file over to the sd card. in amon ra there is a usb-ms toggle function that will allow you to trnasfer files over to the phone in recovery.

4.wipe everything except for sd card. i would do this three times just to make sure that the phone is super clean for the rom to get installed into.

5.select flash from sd card.

6.navigate to the mikg file by using the vol up and down buttons and select the file with the power button.

7.it should begin to flash the rom. after it is done select reboot phone.

hopefully you will have a working phone now.

I get an error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /sdcard

How should I format it since I could only do it on the computer? Do I leave everything default? What's the allocation size?
Well here is a quote from this site about partitioning from recovery, I know you cannot do that but here is the allocation sizes. I use "0" for swap.

t is recommended that you do this before trying to flash a rom.
so here are the directions on how to do it:
1.copy your content of the card to a computer because partitioning will wipe the card's content.
2.go into recovery and select partition your sd card
3.enter 32 for swap, and 1024 or 2048 for ext2, and do the rest for FAT
4.select upgrade ext2 to ext3
5.select usb-ms toggle and transfer your contents of your card on your computer back to the card.
6.go to the main menu and do a full wipe (min data, dalvik cache and cache)
7.flash the superwipe
8.flash the rom of your choice.
9.reboot

I know there is a way to do it on the computer but I'm not sure how.
If I find out, or someone does, will let you know k?
I hope this was a little helpful.:)

that is for partitioning the card which does wipe the card but it is not quite the same. you can probably do it on the computer, just make sure that you are using fat 32.

damn it where is argedion when you need him:( he is the pro on sd cards.
