Help Hero Maintenance Release

Okay, now what was that update suppose to fix???? My wifes HERO still has extreme lag when making a call. The phone appears to have no noticeable changes at all.

I have been reading that this update actually breaks the ability to root your Sprint HTC Hero. That is even if you use the Universal One-Click or UnrEVOked methods.

So, if you planning on getting this update be completely sure you do not want to root your Sprint HTC Hero. If you do apply this update, the only way you could root would be to reinstall the original Android 2.1 build .5 RUU.

Which should not be an issue for many, because if they root they will most likely want to install a custom Rom, so installing the 2.1 build .5 would only take minutes extra.

True, but I figured giving everyone all the information at hand was worth the post. I like knowing little things like this before I proceed with a major change in my devices. ;)

I am sure they will develop a work around for the root killing ability of this update anyway. Then flashing back to the stock Android 2.1 RUU will not even be needed. :D

I did this update last evening, and found that the whole thing was running a little more smoothly than before. The dialer lag is fixed, but it seems to have been a little more involved than that. I have been running 2.1 with no complaints since May, and am happy with the update.

Yep I am sure the Devs will, what I and others would like to know, for those using the one click root , once done will they be getting the message to update also after, or will the one root disable OTA, like other root processes do when you set it up as so, if not then I will assume it will be annoying for the one click rooters to keep getting that message to update!!

I myself got the update this morning to update, but have chosen not to do so for now, will wait a little more for members feedback's, and mainly because I will most likely be rooting, and that will save me one step.

So although I do not use the actual dialer portion of the Hero much, over the last day I have noticed a big improvement in speed and responsiveness of the dialer. Calls connected faster AND when I used the dialer there was virtually no lag.

One bad thing I did notice, and I do not know if the update caused this or not, I did not get text messages yesterday. After rebooting this morning I started receiving them again. However, I had not had problems to texts since the first couple of weeks I had the phone, so it has been quite awhile. Coincidence maybe, or maybe related to update.

I have not had this problem. Might be coincidence, but as we've seen, these phone do seem to very a lot in the problems people experience, so who knows? Good luck.

I did my update this morning, it says update version 2.31.651.7?

Is that the new update? I just installed it, haven't messed w/ anything yet..

I got the update yesterday. It's pretty amazing. I have no lag anywhere. Dialer is definitely a lot faster. I can answer calls faster. The keyboard comes up and responds to my touches a lot faster. The browser auto-rotate is pretty much instantaneous now. Before the update, I had huge lag with all of the preceding issues.

I am LOVING this update :)

I have been trying to get the update but when i check for it i get the circling "checking" box and it goes on forever, until i hit back or home. I dont think this is normal, but i'm not sure. This doesnt happen when i update profile or prl or firmware...it checks then says no new updates, but with the software updates it just checks forever. Is this normal?

No, that's not normal. Have you tried downloading the update over WiFi?

Edit: Thinking about this a little more, I don't think that will make a difference. It sounds like your problem is getting your phone to find the update, not download it. Hmmm... I guess the only advice I have for you is wait a while and try again.

Glad you like it, but I would wait until you report, all updates seem great at first then a week later the phone starts acting up like it use too, let us know again next week, this will give us a better Idea, I am waiting to update as I may root and also want to make sure we can root after this update, so I really want a clear picture of this update first

Try rebooting, then update profile and then update PRL, then try to download the update again and see if that helps

Some may still not have the update yet, as I have received it automatically and denied the download as I want to wait a bit to download. I received it twice automatically and have canceled it, so I decided to check it manually and it still shows up, make sure you are checking HTC software and not Firmware update

Should the update be available to everyone now? I heard it was going out over a week or so.
