How do you update firmware?

I've got a new HTC Hero and I want to update the firmware on it.

Im currently on version 1.0.0.A6288 is there a new update?
 
I am not 100% about the Hero, but most updates come OTA over the air.

You will get a alert like when you get a text. You will be asked if you want to update or not.

Then the phone does it all from there.
 
Hi all, Is this correct that 'when' Orange' or ' T-Mobile' or soon to be 'Orange T-Mobile :-)' this firmware will be over air or through the associated websites as a download ? Boilerhouse
 
Hi there,

this new ROM Update wipes the complete Hero.
That isn't an OTA Update.

OTA is for Hotfixes in the Android OS.

New ROMS only with wiping.

I just got my Hero saturday and i'm new to android. Can someone please describe step by step how to update to the new official ROM released today?
I'm on Vodafone romania, lock free Hero.

Can you recommend the best backup app to use to backup apps and data? And if the backup app itself is removed in the ROM update, how to you initiate the restore? IS it on the sd card perhaps?

Use the app MyBackUp Pro ... if your ROM clears apps or you are required to wipe ... then you just go back to the market and reinstall it ...since you have already purchased it..

Then you can go about restoring apps and settings, sms etc.
